Klipsch Synergy SUB-12 Subwoofer Speaker (Single, Black) Review

Klipsch Synergy SUB-12 Subwoofer Speaker (Single, Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently replaced a Polk Audio PSW-12 with the Synergy. This is an amazing upgrade. It mixes well with the Polk RTi-8 Fronts, and CSi-3 Center, R15 surround and Infinity Primus 250 Back Surround. All of these speakers are powered by an Onkyo 803.
The previous sub had good bass response, but was very directional. What I mean by that is I could hear the bass coming from the sub. It did not fill the room. The Synergy fills the room, and actually makes the bass sound like it is coming from the individual speakers. If you increase the gain, it will shake the house.
Installation was very simple. I used the LFE connection, and plugged it in to power. It also has an automatic power save mode, and a light on the front to let you know what mode it is in. Over all, a great value!

Much has been said about the sound from the TV, but the picture is spectacular as well. Just wasn't ready for 3D yet. Plus I think i got a pretty good deal, $2295 plus a Definitive Audio 8" powered sub-woofer. I guess my only knock is the remote. It feels kinda cheep.

Yamaha RX-V659BL 7.1 Channel Digital Home Theater Receiver (Black) Review

Yamaha RX-V659BL 7.1 Channel Digital Home Theater Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am an A/V novice, and this is how/why I bought this receiver:
I originally bought it while looking for a 6.1 receiver in the $400.00 range. Best B** had a Pioneer that was THX certified for about $475. I had them put a rain check on it, then went to another store to listen to what they had (Best B** has a new policy of 'upselling' by sending any customer who is interested in mid-level audio to a 'specialist' who wants to unload Denon etc. - usually in the Home Theatre room. This annoyed me mightily, as I didn't even get a chance to listen to the Pioneer.)
At the other store, I listened to the 6.1 Yamaha HTR-5850 and was happy with that. My wife pointed out that the 7.1 RX-V659 was only about $50.00 more, and wondered what the difference was. We gave it a listen and were pleased. My wife listened to a Luther Vandross CD, and I listened to a classical music CD, then we popped in a copy of The Matrix DVD (you know what scene). My main concerns were HDTV compatability (has 3 component video inputs) and the RX-V659's audio/video auto upgrade feature. As neither me nor my wife have an iPod, we didn't care about the docking station capability of it, but it is a pleasant upgrade for later. We bought it for quite a bit less than what is listed on the Yamaha website, and less than the Pioneer receiver at BB.
I hooked the receiver to a Bic America Venturi bookshelf pair as front ends, then went with the Yamaha NS-SP1600 5.1 HTIB set-up (yes, it's their low end model, but I listened to them and they sounded fine for our 20'x30' room with nine foot ceiling.) I replaced that Yamaha HTIB center speaker with a KLH 525 II Platinum-II 125-Watt center speaker. I bought a roll of 12 gauge speaker wire - avoided the Monster stuff - went with Lowe's. The CD's and movies sounded great already, but there's more to this: the front speakers still have to 'break in' and only recently did I discover what the Neural Surround Sound exhibits when pumping XM satellite radio through them. WOW! Incredible separation! Our little room now has an audio sweet spot that allows me to consider never going out to the movies again. I've spent hours going through the different sound fields, and continue to come back to Neural Surround. Also , listening with headphones is wonderful with the Night Listening Enhancer - listening to TV with headphones never sounded this good for me. Set-up was breeze - the YPA sound optimizing thing takes some getting used to, but I like that the menus are on your TV's screen, not the face on the receiver unit.
Now I 'have' to get a new DVD/CD player that has DTS output. If this receiver lasts for at least a decade, Yamaha has a fan for life...
Unfortunately, this receiver is not HDMI-ready, but that might not be a gripe if/when I get a new HDTV and can run the video line directly into the TV instead of the receiver. Otherwise, this is a 5 star review.

Surround speakers have been the part of my HT that I have neglected for the longest. I've upgraded fronts, center, sub, AVR, etc. but I've had true surround speakers. I've been tempted several times, but never pulled the trigger. Although they are not a match to the rest of my speakers (Polk LSi's), I am very happy with them. Surround effects are detailed and realistic. I also like to listen to concert DVD's and I'm very happy with the performance of these speakers with music. Purchase from Amazon was smooth and quick. Ordered on a Tuesday night close to midnight and received them on Thursday.

Yamaha YSP-1100BL Digital Sound Projector Review

Yamaha YSP-1100BL Digital Sound Projector
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a 10 month old daughter. she loves to climb on anything to pull herself up into a standing position. She has forced me to rethink my surround sound set up for her safety. I was using a high end sony amp to power my klispch rc-7 speakers on stands. I ordred the YSP-1100 with serious doubts that I would be truely satified after using a 6.1 system for some time. I was wrong. It works realy well. They have made it easy to install and set up. It even keep some features of a traditonal surround system. One can turn the left, center, right, rear right and rear left volume up independently. the sound quality is very claer. The highs are not as bright as the Klipsch but they are better than most. There are recomendations for room size and shape. the room size recommendations are (width 3 to 7 meter, h 2 to 3.5 meter and depth 3 to 7 meter). You will also need four walls in the sitting listing area to reflect the sound. Sound reflection is how it is able to achive the surround sound. I know it sounds like a gimmic but it does work. Here is my list of pro's and con's
pro's
1. Easy to set up.
2. Great sound.
3. No running wires between amp and speakers.
4. Wall mountable (with optional mounting bracket).
5. Sub woofer out put (one rca jack).
6. Video inputs (3 conponent and four composite).
7. Two audio inputs.
8. Digital audio inputs (2 toslink and 1 coax).
9. It has a mic to place in the sitting area to allow it to do auto setup.
10. You will not have chair setting really close to rear surround speaker.
Con's
1. No HDMI inputs or outputs.
2. You have to have four walls to get great sound.
3. The room size does matter.
4. If wall mounted be prepared to hide some cables (I ran mine inside the wall, looks great).
5. Needs a sub woofer for the full bottom end sound.
6. It is recommended that is to installed where no furniture will block the sound for reflecting off the walls.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great sounding surround system (if they meet the room spec and have four walls).

Yamaha's YSP-1100 Digital Sound Projector provides true multi-channel surround sound from a single component. As amazing as it seems, the YSP-1100 can actually deliver multi-channel sound that surrounds listeners the same way that sound from front, center and rear speakers does. DVD movies and other digital sources sound just the way they are supposed to. Dolby Pro Logic II is included, so even 2-channel TV sound can be heard in glorious multi-channel surround. Remember, this is true surround sound, not virtual surround, which can cause listening fatigue. This model features 40 built-in beam drivers and 2 built-in woofers, along with 42 corresponding digital amplifiers.
The YSP-1100 precisely controls the orientation of sound by focusing it into beams. The center channel sound is heard directly, while the sounds from other channels are heard after reflecting off the walls surrounding the listener. SRS's TruBass technology uses harmonics to provide deep and rich bass response. The result is an excellent solution for video enthusiasts who wish to build their home theater systems around larger flat screen TVs and desire a neat, uncluttered, unobtrusive system to match the interior of their room.
Five selectable sound settings allow users to choose between 5-Beam Mode, Stereo Mode, 3-Beam Mode, Stereo+3-Beam Mode and My Beam Mode. The YSP-1100 has a wider soundstage than its predecessors, affording more optimum listening positions within a room. My Beam mode allows users to focus sound to a specific position in their room at the touch of a button to avoid disturbing others.
Yamaha's CINEMA DSP technology, which offers seven audio programs compatible with the Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic II, and DTS Neo:6 sound formats, creates realistic soundscapes in any room. For late night movie and music enjoyment, the YSP-1100 features a Night Listening Enhancer mode that allows dialog and quiet passages to be heard clearly, even at low volumes. The TV Equal Volume mode prevents sudden bursts of sound from TV programs and commercials.
The YSP-1100 offers simple video input selection with a multi-language onscreen display. Video can be selected from any of two component inputs to a component output, or from three composite inputs to a composite output with superimposed onscreen display menus in any of four languages (English, French, German and Spanish).

I have six Definite Technology high end speakers in surround. They are fantastic. Unfortunately, they were too fantastic for my mid-price receiver and I ended up buying a Maranz SR8002 to drive them appropriately (60% off at Amazon). I now lose track of the picture because I get lost in the sound. I have an Apple TV which allows me to play my 52 GB of music through the same speakers, ranging from opera to Son House. All sound fantastic.
I know very little about the technology behind these products. However, I have a very well tuned ear and what I care about is how it sounds rather than the specs of the unit. A++++ for these. I own the SLS 5.1 Q line Gold system, an awesome system :SLS Q-Line Gold 650w 5.1 Surround Sound Home Theater System. But I wanted to upgrade to a 7.1 system without breaking the bank. So I purchased this system and a Yamaha 7.1 receiver total cost around $550. Let me toot my own horn, as I think I just put together the best HTIB under $600 anywhere! These speakers rock, clear as a bell, I love the ribbon tweeters which highlight every detail of my music and or movie experience. I auditioned many systems before buying this product including Denon, Onkyo and BOSE. These SLS speakers with the Yamaha receiver outperform any of these systems by a long shot and for less money! What I found is that most HTIB systems have good receivers, but throw in crap speakers to sell the receivers. I could not be happier and my friend who has the Onkyo HT-S6300 7.1 could not be more jealous; sorry John I told you so. These SLS speakers outperform the Onkyo hands down, I can clearly see why some say the speakers alone are worth $800. I would highly recommend these speakers to my friends!

Yamaha RX-A800 7.1-Channel Audio/Video Receiver (Black) Review

Yamaha RX-A800 7.1-Channel Audio/Video Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So I've had my RX-A800 for a few months now, and I can say that I am fully satisfied with it!
I've got it wired to my 5.1 system, main LR speakers are bi-amped, too. I've got it hooked up to my TV, PS3, cable-box DVR, Nintendo, and my computer on occasion. Handles everything like a champ.
Everything sounds great, but more than that, I love how it handles the video, as well. Makes everything so simple to wire, especially with HDMI. I can't say that the video-upscaling has really "wow"ed me, but I have no complaints about it, either (the Nintendo is the only non-HD device I have!).
Likes:
-HD Radio! Cool!
-"Scene" buttons... instead of powering on, switching through all the inputs, just press "TV" or "BD/DVD" or "Radio" and it'll take you directly to that input, and set it to your preferred sound program (7.1, 2.1, etc).
-On-screen display ... makes adjusting and fine-tuning the sound super easy, plus displays all the RDS radio tags for songs, etc.
-Really good price compared to other units (including other Yamaha's!)
-Works well with Harmony One remote
"Dislikes":
-I know this is reaching, but I think there are too many different sound-modes. "Concert Hall Vienna" or "Concert Hall Munich" or "Cellar Club" or "Roxy Theater" ... they all just sound extra reverby to me, and I prefer a clean, straight-from-the-recording sound, so I don't use them.
-Bluetooth, iPod, and Sirius Radio adapters all cost extra.
-The FM antenna needs an upgrade (it's just a loose wire).I highly recommend the RX-A800. Sure, the A1000 (or +) is probably even better, but that small step up would have been a large step up in price for me, so I'm happy with my purchase!

Yamaha YSP-3050BL Digital Sound Projector Review

Yamaha YSP-3050BL Digital Sound Projector
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Yamaha YSP-3050 is my first soundbar purchase, and I settled on it after reading lots of reviews (both professional and peer) which praised its sound quality. I was interested in a soundbar because I was averse to setting up a true 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system for various reasons, and Yamaha was consistently rated at the top of the field. I took advantage of Amazon's offer of a free Yamaha YST-FSW050BL Advanced YST II Down-Firing Active Subwoofer with purchase.
SOUND: This is the most important factor, in my book. I'm happy to say the reviews I read were accurate, and the sound quality of the device does not disappoint. I was pleasantly surprised at how good of a job the soundbar does at simulating 5.1 sound. My room does not match either of the "ideal" layouts described, and I utilized the automatic calibration function, and the sound is excellent in 5 beam mode and stereo + 3 beam mode. My friend owns a Sony HTC Soundbar, and he commented that the Yamaha seemed to have slightly superior sound. Either way, the audio for my Blu-Rays and video games have never sounded better. I haven't spent as much time testing out "built-in" subwoofers because I have an external one, but from what I can tell the addition of the external subwoofer is a substantial benefit for bass fans. I'm glad I got it.SETUP: Setup was relatively simple, especially for HDMI devices. It should be fairly obvious what connectors go where. However, there are a few potential snags for the unwary. One annoyance was the fact that all the inputs/outputs (except HDMI) on the rear panel are downward facing, so reconfiguring them requires turning the entire soundbar on its side. Another confusing feature was the ability to reassign audio inputs to video inputs. As an example, you can select AUX1 optical as the audio input to associate with your component video input, or you can select an RCA analog input to associate with the same video input. This is an extra level of configuration that is helpful (and by design saves space on the rear panel), but can be confusing to learn. Unfortunately the manual doesn't do an amazing job of explaining this feature either. Generally speaking, the manual is great at covering the basics, but lacking on the advanced features (which I would assume are the ones users would be more likely to refer to the manual for).
For those who are having trouble figuring this out, the confusion arises because the remote control selections are labeled by AUDIO input, but the input assignment menu is grouped by VIDEO input. So although it looks like you are assigning AUX1 audio to Component Video, for example, in reality you are assigning Component Video to AUX1 audio. This is because the mode you will select when operating the soundbar is AUX1, and the soundbar will then know to pass through Component Video to the television set. I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense as written, but it's somewhat non-intuitive as I explained.
So far, my biggest gripe is actually with a technical limitation. The YSP-3050BL only supports up to 1080i input through component, and not full 1080p as it should. (Though some will mistakenly claim otherwise, component video does indeed support full 1080p, and I've been using 1080p over component on my Xbox 360 for a long time now.) This limitation was not made obvious anywhere, and took an e-mail to Yamaha support to determine why my component video was not being passed through. Thus, I have been faced with the choice of lowering the quality of my video to 1080i or sending the video signal directly to the TV and not taking advantage of the receiver-function of the soundbar. To Yamaha's credit, their support was knowledgeable and quick to respond.
PRICE: Let's face it, $1000 is a little steep, especially when major competitors (e.g., Sony HTCs) are in the $300-range. That being said, all accounts point to the Yamaha as offering superior audio. It's probably not $700 worth, and you certainly can find a full 5.1 system for less than $1000. But there are many reasons a full 5.1 or 7.1 setup are not practical, and if you have the extra cash this is guaranteed to deliver a good audio experience.

Sony STR-DN1020 3D Blu-ray Disc A/V Receiver (Black) Review

Sony STR-DN1020 3D Blu-ray Disc A/V Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

Howdy!
It's been a banner fifteen months. I've been able to slowly upgrade to my A/V system from a crappy one to one of extraordinary magnitude. Yes... my days of watching "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" on the Sony Betamax are over. Now I've been out of the A/V game for some time and have been boning up on what the new technology has to offer. There is amazing gear and technology that is available to people at great prices. The journey I've made, and I'm not talking about the band that replaced Steve Perry with a dude they found on YouTube, has allowed me to update my A/V gear to include the following...
1 Sony STRDN1020 Receiver
1 Sony Bravia NX 800 Series 52' LED TV
1 Sony PS3 Slim 160GB
4 Mediabridge HDMI cables
1 Belkin Subwoofer Cable

Sure I'm a loyal Sony customer, but it's because they have treated me well over the years and I have the stash of still working, but outdated, gear to prove it.
Current SONY holdings...
1 Sony Betamax (1982) Make an offer!
1 Sony VHS Player (1985)
1 SONY HIFI VHS Player (1986)
1 Sony Laserdisc Player (1990)
1 Sony 36" Bravia TV (1995?) Estimated weight 2.56 metric tons
1 Sony 5.1 receiver (1999)
Now I don't want to come off as a Sony snob so I do want to mention that I have the following non-Sony items in my electronic stash.
1 Hasbro Litebrite (1981) Crystal clear pixel display but runs a little hot.
1 Hasbro Easy-Bake Oven (1975) A man's got to eat but runs a little cool.
1 Motorola M500 Bag Phone (1978) Looks great in my 1982 TransCamaro with the T-TopsSo here's my review of the Sony STRDN1020 receiver.
DELIVERY:
It took a week for the arrival but that's because I live in the middle of nowhere (Think Rudolph's trek to the land of broken toys) and didn't pay for expedited shipping. At time of delivery the UPS guy was very impressed with the receiver and it's features having read them off the box. He threw in a pair of complimentary fist bumps. That alone has to be worth one star on the review scale. The box was sealed to protect that "New Stuff Smell".
SETUP:
Well it took longer to extract the old receiver and 83 miles of attached RCA and S-Video cables then it did to install the STRDN1020 and the 3 HDMI, 1 Subwoofer, and 1 network cables. God bless you HDMI inventors wherever you are.
Actual setup was about an hour with 70% of the time spent trying to attach five speakers to the receiver's rear terminals. Folks... PLEASE don't be a cheap a-hole like me... get yourself some banana plugs. I have learned my lesson. NEVER again will I risk peersonal injury to hook up some speakers. Can you really put a price on Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? I hope I don't miss any work ... my dog needs braces.
The included manual was easy to follow and there is a chart on how to hook up your speakers and other components. I initialized the receiver and set up the speaker pattern, network, and audio calibration in about fifteen minutes. The GUI is easy to use but not as intuitive as the menus used on Sony's PS3 and TV's, whatever the heck they call it.

SOUND: All Connections VIA HDMI
Bluray VIA PS3 - This rig sounds great. I have a 2002 JBL 5.1 set up and they've never sounded better. Do you know that scene from "The Notebook" where the crew is robbing the armored car? Of course you don't it doesn't exist. God I hate that movie and the unrealistic bar it has set for us working men. Jim Rockford should be ashamed of himself. Anyway... you probably know the opening of the movie "Heat" where Deniro, Waynegrow and the boys, extract some goodies from the armored car. Now I have the movie on VHS HIFI, Laserdisc, DVD, and Bluray so I guess you can say I'm familiar with the audio recordings and playback of each format. The sound of the receiver and bluray was absolutely phenomenal. It really made the movie more intense. I almost called 911 to report a robbery in progress. I can't wait until they release Breakin' 2: Electric Boogalooo bluray. It's 'gonna be some insane sound!
TV - The Audio return channel is a great feature since I utilize our Sony TV to watch Netflix and Amazon on Demand, and to stream my computer's music. All three sources sound awesome and bring more bang to what are already incredible TV features.

PS3 - I played Call of Duty/Black OPS on the PS3 and once again phenomenal sound. In multi-player mode I can now hear those Orange County punks sneaking up behind me. Sure, they still kill me but now they have to look me in the eye when they do it. Backstabbers!
Cable Box - Great Sound. You feel like you are actually in the middle of one of the fights between the Real Housewives of New Jersey until you realize that you aren't because you have your "Stuff" together. Warning! Those A.S.P.C.A commercials with Sarah Mclachlan are now 10 times sadder.

Tuner: Don't useVIDEO:
I have had no video issues. All connections VIA HDMI. The Cable HD looks great. No sync issues with audio and no loss with running the cable through the receiver instead of straight to the TV.
BRAVIA SYNC Sure it's proprietary and only works on Sony gear but it works great. Hooray for me! Proprietary functionality is my one gripe with Sony but you Apple folks have zero right to complain.
Conclusion
I'm looking forward to growing old or should I say older with the receiver. I look forward to firmware updates that may extend the usefulness of the receiver. This may not be the best receiver on the market at the best price but it does everything most people will need and is very simple to operate. With this Sony, I won't have to send my wife to a three day course at a distant Ramada Inn to learn how to operate the damn thing.
I will update this with a review of the network functions once I've had time to utilize them. Also, I don't roll with Apple products so I will not be using the included Ipod dock.

Yamaha RX-V765BL 665 Watt 7-Channel Home Theater Receiver Review

Yamaha RX-V765BL 665 Watt 7-Channel Home Theater Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had been looking at several of the Yamaha models through the spring of 2009, as well as its competitor's (Sony, Onkyo, Denon), for an upgrade of my ancient Sony receiver (one of the first Pro-logic receivers). I just installed a set of Definitive Technology Mythos speakers ordered through Amazon.com, including a power-hungry Mythos Three center channel. I wanted this receiver to be the core of my Home Theater as it's primarily use for improving my Sony Blu-ray and TiVo Series3 HD DVR experience.
Sports, such a baseball is vivid with the upscale feature from 1080i to 1080p (although it has not yet improved the performance of my Seattle Mariners). 1080i broadcast shows such as Chuck, both sound and look great.
The optional YDS-11SL iPod dock works well with both a 4th generation Nano and an 80G iPod Classic, including the videos.
What is worth the wait is the clean layout on the back, the heft of the discrete amp, and the Blu-ray friendly support with both the scene button and the Decoders for HD audio formats: Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Yes they do make a difference in your home theater experience.
The audio calibration microphone works as advertised. Silent Cinema (headphone mode) is also a nice feature.
What could be improved - You need to keep the manual next to you for the first week to figure out some of the controls such as accessing all of the iPod controls with the dock. I was also sorry to see HD Radio(tm) missing from this "top of the mid-range" Yamaha's. The older RX-V863 has it, but this one doesn't. Also the four scene buttons are not programmable. I wanted to program the TV scene button for my TiVo (HDMI #2), no luck.
In the end, if you are looking for a quality receiver that performs well on both movies and music, and can drive your amp hungry speakers to their potential, look no farther that this RX-V765. It really was worth the wait.

Sharp SD-AT1000 600 Watt Home Theater Audio System Review

Sharp SD-AT1000 600 Watt Home Theater Audio System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
the sharp sd-at1000 is by far one of the best home theater out there for its price(i got mine for 199). it has 600 watts or total power and can decode everything, dts, dolby digital, pro logic and pro logic 2. its also utilizes sharp's 1 bit technology which converts analog signals into digital, while its ultra-high speed sampling rate captures detailed, high frequency sounds that could never before be experienced. it also has 2 digital and 3 line inputs and a nice design. this system also doubbles as a am/fm radio with magnetically shielded front speakers. my only complaint is it does not have a dvd play but for the price i really wasn't expecting one. later models such as the sd-at 3000 and 4000 dv do contain dvd players but for a much higher price. i'd recommend this system to anyone, just buy a good dvd player and you're good to go.

The SD-AT1000 home-theater audio system presents an affordable version of a sophisticated digital amplifier from Sharp, which helped pioneer digital-audio amplifiers. The system includes a six-channel surround receiver, five satellite speakers, and a passive subwoofer, all of which are designed to be hooked up with a DVD player, satellite receiver, VCR, or other video sources so you can enjoy exciting music and sound alongside your video programs. The SD-AT1000's amplifier uses a single-bit digital-to-analog converter that switches at an ultrahigh 2.8 MHz, more than 60 times faster than the clock used for CD audio, to deliver 40 watts per channel (x 6) of dynamic, ultraclear power across the entire range of audible frequencies (20 to 20,000 Hz), and up to 100 watts per channel at specific frequencies.A pair of digital-audio inputs accepts Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround signals, which the receiver decodes and routes to each of the system's speakers: one petite satellite each for left, center, right, and left/right surrounds, as well as a passive subwoofer with a 6.5-inch cone (the sub is driven by the same 40 watts as each of the other channels).Dolby Pro Logic II generates 5.1-channel signals from any stereo (two-channel input), and the receiver's other connections include three analog audio (left/right RCA) inputs and a stereo output for feeding, for instance, a CD or minidisc recorder or a tape deck. Should you want to drive your bass to even greater depths (or merely louder levels), the receiver offers a subwoofer pre-amplifier output that can route a variable-level signal to an independently amplified subwoofer of your choosing. What's in the Box Integrated surround amplifier, 5 satellite speakers, a passive subwoofer, a remote control, remote batteries, FM/AM antenna, a user's manual, and all requisite cabling.

If you are going to spend big bucks on a large screen TV, why not get a good quality audio system too. Any of them will beat TV speakers. Given the amount of time most people use their TV, would encourage others to get a good audio system if they can afford it. This thing brings a whole new dimension to movies as well as other programming.
So far, have the center and front speakers hooked up along with the sub woofer. Like the adjustable active sub woofer volume knob. Have more speaker wire on the way for the long wire runs on my side and rear speakers. Am not using HDMI cables on my standard definition system yet. Next, will begin mounting more speakers with the Sanus mount system.
The clear and deep sound quality of this powerful 1200 watt system is great for the money- as many reputable online review sources said. The powered (110 volt) 290 watt subwoofer will make the floor shake, windows rattle and my cat head for cover. One can crank up the volume to the point where the house is vibrating but it still maintains clarity and quality sound. They include cheap little plastic protective pads to keep the sub woofer from marking floors. After watching a James Bond movie with it, believe the 10" sub woofer, that is pointed straight down, was designed so viewers could feel explosions and such for it sure shakes the floorboards. It gives one a sense of being right in the action scenes when you can actually feel the movie. All of the wires are fully color coded making it easy to hook up with no mistakes. It would be hard to be unable to get this system up and running properly if you pay attention to the easy set up guide.
Consumer Reports rated the Onkyo 5100 model that this system recently replaced their highest rated choice for a home theater system. It was the only model that they rated "very good" for sound quality. All of the rest only rated "good" per their opinion. This 5200 model is a new release to replace their 5100 system. Wonder just how many systems CR tested total.
You can't go too far wrong here for high sound quality at a budget price. One review source said Onkyo consistently beats other brands.
My goal was high quality sound and realism at a reasonable price. Will add extras (blu-ray player...) after I have the system set up and properly tuned with their included syncronization mic system that automatically adjusts the system for each unique application, room size, etc.
Everything about this HTIB is big including the large, heavy box it comes in. Physics is physics- that's how they get the clear, deep, high quality sound out of the sound chambers. All of the speakers have a real wood grain laminate exterior finish- look good. There are numerous higher priced Onkyo home theater systems and one lower priced model than this one.
Oct. 6, '09: Consumer Reports has now put this one- the Onkyo 5200 system in their number one spot with a Yamaha YHT-591 model second at $600 and a cheaper Yamaha YHT-391 ($300) in third place. They have these three systems rated "very good" for sound quality currently. Been enjoying mine about everyday now. Especially using it for XM music from my Direct TV satellite connection. Am now working on getting a good old fashion TV antenna 34' feet into the air with a powered pre amplifer on it for all of my regional broadcast stations. The amplified rabbit ears have to go with what's available free off the airways nowadays.
Nov. 13, 2009: Am definitely getting my money worth out of this system. Use it a lot for XM music. Usually last less than five minutes before I switch from TV speakers to the home theater system and turn off the TV- great sound quality. There is no comparison with TV speakers. It is comparable to a high quality stereo system.
Dec. 9 2009: Consumer Reports now has the Onkyo 7200 model ($800) in 1st place with the 5200 model in 2nd. They rated the Yamaha YHT-391 ($300) system a best buy. CR rated all of them "very good" for sound quality. Have noticed that many appear to like the Onkyo 6200 model system for its capabilities.
Bought my Onkyo 5200 HTIB system back when they were going for a best price of $500.00 or more at about all of the larger online retailers. Paid $443.00 for my system new including shipping from a small but reputable seller but I have no factory warranty for Onkyo does not see fit to cover their products unless you purchase them from an "authorized Onkyo dealer". So far, have not encountered anything I have not been able to figure out using the owner's manual. Hopefully, it will not need repair service anytime in the near (or distant) future. It appears that Amazon is an authorized Onkyo dealer.
Guess you can tell, I'm happy with this HTIB. It has the level of sound quality and power that I wanted. It was money well spent. Don't comprimise sound quality just to get a system with a built in DVD/Blu-ray player. The live concerts Direct TV broadcasts periodically are great with this system and a 52" LCD TV.
After watching a live Jethro Tull concert last weekend and a live Toto concert this weekend with this thing cranked up just right, must add: if you have a hang up about the size of the speakers, do yourself a big favor and get past it.
May 2010: See that Amazon now has a similar looking Onkyo 5300 model currently for sale for $39.00 more. It probably has technical improvements. Looks like it's a newer model. Check out Onkyo's website at [...].

Like previous Onkyo 7.1-channel receiver/speaker packages, the HT-S5200 delivers reassuringly hefty amounts of power and all-round performance. And in line with other recent offerings, it's also perfectly suited for high-definition entertainment in the home: 1080p video takes center stage from sources such as Blu-ray Disc, DVD, HD broadcasting, and gaming. Astro A40 Audio System - Black Review

Astro A40 Audio System - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are like me you are reading just about every online forum, watching most YouTube videos, and reading every review for the latest gaming/audiophile headsets. I think I've spent close to 4-5 hours on forums alone. Many of the forum debates go between people who know what they are talking about and stupid teenagers either ranting about brand names or repeating what their chubby best friend told them, so to help you make a decision and save you time, I'll summarize most of what is out there.
The most popular and most endorsed audio system is the Astro Mixamp, people disagree on what headset is best for the Mixamp however. It is usually between the Astro A40's and any "audiophile" headphone in the 100-200 price range (Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, etc.).
The Tritton's AX720 are the best budget headset. They do the job but do not match the Astro's sound and versatility (I have not personally tried them, but this is what most say). Opinions about the Turtle Beach's are mixed - some like them but most agree that they are not as good the Tritton's/Astro's and thus are not worth the price (X41).
Be careful when reading forums and pay attention to the posting date. Some are comparing an older version of the Astro system, pre-2009 (they have since updated the Mixamp and I think re-wired the headphones). Also, take note on what system they are using a headset. The Xbox 360 has an inferior sound output compared to high-end PC sound cards. PS3 also has better sound than the Xbox. Some are even using headphone amps. Obviously the source of sound affects the headset. So when people claim "this sucks" or "sounds hollow," while others say "music sounds great," they are using different sources more than likely.
If you are looking for a quality, versatile headset with the best sound, I recommend buying the Astro system and another pair of headphones you think would be better and compare the two, then just return the ones you don't like. It all depends on your setup: Xbox, PS3, PC, etc. They are a bit pricey, but I'd rather spend $200+ on something good than $100 on something sub-par.
The Mixamp is pretty sweet. It's powered through USB or batteries, it is small/light, and it mixes voice/sound like a champ. You can hook it up to pretty much anything and use any headset/headphone you want. I like it especially because it doesn't take up much room and doesn't clog another outlet on my power strip. Right now, there is nothing like it.
The most popular audiophile headphones people are raving about are the Sennheiser 555/595 and the Audio-Technica AD700. I purchased the AD700's, along with the Astro system to see how they matched up. From most of the reviews the $90, AD700's seemed to be the best, either way I just wanted to see how audiophile headphones compared to the A40's. Some have claimed the Sennheiser PC 350's are pretty good too, but again I figured most of the audiophile headphones in this price range are roughly the same, so if the A40's beat one, then I didn't see much use comparing it to another. I used both headphones with and without the Mixamp: Xbox 360, iPod, home JBL Stereo w/digital out, and my DVR w/digital out. I care mainly about sound, so if you want to know about comfort and aesthetics then you'll want to read the countless reviews online. The AD700's are a bit different. They have a larger "soundstage" and the highs are really, really high - almost too high. For games it hurts my ears (MW2), but for music they are pretty nice. The bass is clear and clean but not deep. The A40's sound much better for gaming (better lows, clear highs yet not ear-piercing). And don't forget that the A40's have a built-in mic and accessories. For music the AD700's stand out, but they aren't all that much better than the A40's, especially not enough to give up the mic, mute switch, and accessories. If you go with something like the AD700 you'll have to find a suitable mic for the 360 (another $10-$30) and purchase the Y-adapter from Astro (another $10). Some have rigged a mic to the headset, while others have used a neck mic - I'm too lazy for all that. For me to give up the convenience of the Astro system and create my own headset the sound had better be freakin' spectacular and blow the A40's away...the AD700's did not do this. Sure they sound a bit brighter and have a slightly larger soundstage (they should with 53mm drivers), but it isn't enough to boot-kick the A40's as if they're crap. Again, it all depends on the source. So if you have some sick 5.1 Dolby receiver or a record player (does anyone listen to records anymore?) then you'll probably come to a different conclusion. In order for audiophile headphones to shine you really need a quality source. For the Xbox, iPod, and the everyday CD player the differences between the A40's and AD700's are minimal.
The Astro system is a total package deal. You can connect it to multiple systems and it sounds great with each one. While the AD700's sound a little better with music, I don't think the difference is enough to forgo the convenience and compatibility of the A40's. Personal preference determines which headphone is best, so no one will agree completely. You have to try them out yourself.

Yamaha YSP-5100BL Digital Sound Projector(Black) Review

Yamaha YSP-5100BL Digital Sound Projector(Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I chose the Yamaha Sound Projector to provide top quality sound without all the wires and speakers that come with typical home theater systems. I had heard sound bars before and really wasn't all that impressed so I took a chance and ordered the Yamaha YSP for its claimed ability to provide surround sound without all the set up and install headaches.
First at nearly 9 inches tall and loaded with countless speakers this unit is physically very impressive. Installing it was a breeze and quite frankly is the reason I purchased it. Simply position it near your TV hook up your home theater components and away you go. No troublesome wiring, and decisions on where to place your satellite speakers. The 5100 comes with wireless controllers for both a subwoofer and an iPod and these I both use and found to work as advertised. Additionally, the system comes with a tuning mic that you can use to set up the system to recreate the surround sound effects. Again this works as advertised and was very simple to complete. Since the unit relies on reflecting sound off of objects like walls to create the surround sound effect placement of your TV and where you sit do have implications, but no more than any other home theater system. There will always be a sweet spot for listening, but I found the YSP provided a solid listening experience in and around that sweet spot.
The sound quality you get from this unit is superb. Leagues better than any sound bar I have ever heard. Adding the subwoofer as an option makes the system top flight. The best part about this system is that it adapts so well to music, movies, news programs, and sports. I have heard some sound systems that do not adapt very well and make certain types of content sound strange. Not so with the YSP.It has a strong central speaker sound that provides what I believe is good orientation when listening to various types of content. The surround capabilities when matched with content that can take advantage of it is as good as any theater experience I have had and that says a lot.
I wanted a home theater system that provided top shelf sound without all the hassle and distraction of setting up multiple speakers and I can say that I found it in the YSP. As far as I am concerned this is the flagship that all home theater systems should be compared against.

7 Piece Surround Sound Speaker Set for SLS Q-Line Gold Home Theater System Review

7 Piece Surround Sound Speaker Set for SLS Q-Line Gold Home Theater System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well this is going to be the complete story as I seek to help out some buyers out there. I'm moving to a new condo come August. I'm in need of 3 sound systems. 1 dedicated to music and 2 to movies and games. I already had an acoustimass 10 with a pair of Bose 161 & a martin logan dynamo to complete a 7.2 system running on a Yamaha RXV667. This is to give you an idea of what we are comparing the SLS to. I was eager to get a klipsch quintet set for 500 bucks but wasn't still sure they would do the job. Inept on researching and found in YouTube a video comparing the kipsch speakers to the SLS. I went back to amazon and researched the SLS and got a bargain of 7 speakers at 200 bucks. After watching the video and getting to know all about the materials they were made of, and their size, I decided to give them a try.
I bought an rxv567 to go with them. These are 4 ohm rated speakers and the yamaha is designed to run 6 ohm and up. I even talked tomthe guys at av express who actually sell them and they told me it was safe to drive them with any rxv. I was nervous I would kill the amplifier, so I researched even further and even Martin Logan speakers hat are 4 ohm are safe to drive with a 6 ohm amplifier. You really need to run the amplifier at really loud volumes or through long periods of time
To run any risk.
If you are concerned with size , these have a rather small form factor but they are larger than the Bose 161. Be mindful of your available space for they will not fit everywhere, but still they are not as large a bookshelf.
These speakers come with their own stand or they have an option to hang them on he wall or to place them horizontally or vertically. They also come with speaker wire gauge 16 color coded to each speaker which is nice
They are really sturdy and rather heavy, the center channel is particulary heavy weighting around 9 pounds. The other satellites weight about 7 pounds.
Well as for the most important factor, sound is awesome. It has a very neat balance between high tones and mid bass. High tones are crystal clear and not at all harsh on your ear, however you really need a sub for this speakers. They sound nice on their own but they will never hit low notes unless you help them.
I have only tested them once with the brand new rxv567 set up out of the box I'll let you know my thoughts once I completely set them up in my new condo, sub and all.
They are currently out of stock at av express but I really hope they restock it soon cause I'm going back for more. At 89 dollars a pair you can't go wrong with these. They are just amazing!!!

ZVOX 430HSD High-Performance Single-Cabinet Surround Sound System with Optical and Coaxial Digital Inputs Review

ZVOX 430HSD High-Performance Single-Cabinet Surround Sound System with Optical and Coaxial Digital Inputs

If you are looking to reduce the size of your home theater system the ZVOX sound bar represents a good option. We dumped our CD changer (ripping all the CDs to iTunes), receiver, and speakers. All this was replaced with a sleek sound bar and an iPod! Sound reproduction is quite good.
The only complaint I have for this system has to do with the remote. As the sound bar is incorporated into home theater systems, it would be optimal to have access to the remote codes so that other remotes (e.g. TV, satellite) could be programmed to control the ZVOX. These codes are not provided with the unit, and ZVOX customer/technical service is completely unresponsive to requests for the codes.
