Harman Kardon HK3480 Stereo Receiver Review

A couple of months ago my old and very simple Sony equipment started to give up on me after years of use. So I started to look for a good replacement for it.
Since this was meant to be a replacement to be located at my bedroom and mostly for music playing, my first idea was to look for one of those popular mini-systems with everything integrated on them. I found some interesting products from Onkyo and Denon but, although their sound was quite nice (especially Denon's), I found that their power was somehow limited.
Then, I decided to look for some of those "Home Theater in a box" systems that are so popular nowadays, even if I would use it primarily for music reproduction! I tried Sony, Kenwood and Denon. I found an interesting Denon system, but before buying it I decided to bring along a couple of my own CDs in order to try it out with my own music!
The next day I took a couple of my favourite CDs with me to try them with the Denon. I chose Mahler's Symphony #3 (with Boulez), Andreas Scholl's "Ombra mai fu", some Dead Can Dance and Air's "Moon Safari". It really sounded nice but since I had those CDs with me I decided to make a last visit to the department store where I had seen the Denon and Onkyo mini-systems before making a final decission.
An hour later I visited this department store and went to their audio department. Instead of looking for the mini-systems I went directly to the high-end audio area. Among the various Onkyos, Marantz, Denons and Yamahas I noticed Harman Kardon's new HK-3480, and I immediately liked the looks of it's new design! Then, I contacted a salesman and after telling him that I mostly listen to classical music (although my other musical tastes are quite varied), he suggested me to give the Harman Kardon a try!
I was able to compare the Harman Kardon with the Denons (both the mini-system and the Home Theater options). After some listening I was convinced that a nice stereo system was more than enough for me. The power and sheer clarity of sound of Harman Kardon's HK-3480 was immediately noticeable!
We first tried it with a couple of Yamaha speakers, then with Cerwin-Vega, Infinity and finally with Polk. Boy oh boy, what a beautiful sound the Polk's have, cristal clear and absolutely gorgeous!!! Besides, they look so sharp! We finally added an Infinity subwoofer and there it was, the perfect setup for me! I was really ready to make a final decission! I bought Harman Kardon's HK-3480 reciever along with H-K's FL-8385 CD player, a pair of Polk's RTi8 speakers and Infinity's PS10 subwoofer. What a difference from my old and humble Sony setup! By the way, if you choose Polk speakers like I did, get the black ones, they look great along Harman Kardon's silver and black design!
The HK-3480 receiver works great! There are more than enough connections inputs on it, including several for audio/video and a phono input too (now I'm also thinking about replacing my old Technics for a brand new turntable). The HK-3480 is surely a great receiver for those who want top quality stereo sound, but it should me mentioned that with the VMAx feature on this receiver you can have simulated surround sound too when you need it!
I now feel that all of a sudden my CD collection doubled in size since every single CD in my collection sounds so much better now! I'm rediscovering music that I bought 10 or 15 years ago! What a joy!!!

Not everyone wants or needs a 5.1-channel receiver, which is where this HK3480 two-channel receiver from Harman Kardon comes into play. This ultra-high-bandwidth, 240-watt unit is perfect for fans of jazz, classical, or rock, as its powerful features bring out both the bombast and the nuance of your favorite music. The HK3480 is also one of the few stereo receivers to employ VMAx technology, a proprietary signal-processing technique that simulates a 360-degree sound field through a mere two speakers. The technology gives the listener the sensation of sitting in a concert hall or theater without requiring a surround sound setup.Though the HK3480 is designed primarily for music, it also pumps out high-quality audio for your TV, DVD player, VCR, and video game console. It includes enough inputs for each of these components, along with composite video switching that allows you to conveniently switch between them. And unlike many current receivers, the unit offers a high-quality phono input (with preamp) for people who treasure the unique sound of LPs and don't want to give up their lifelong record collections. The HK3480 also comes with an AM/FM tuner with 30 station presets, a three-step fluorescent display, and a multicomponent remote control. As with most modern receivers, it's ready to serve as the audio centerpiece of all your listening needs, with seven audio inputs and four video inputs (including one on the front panel). The inputs are gold-plated for quality. The unit also comes with pre-out/main-in jacks for use with external amplifiers or speaker processors and a separate subwoofer output. Hookup is simple due to the color-keyed connections. The receiver's tuner section offers exceptional performance, from its high signal-to-noise ratio (73 dB in mono, 72 dB in stereo) to high (40 dB) channel separation for superior stereo imaging--not to mention strong tuning abilities with the help of better-than-80-dB image rejection and better-than-100-dB IF (intermediate frequency) rejection. This component is equipped with a nonvolatile EEPROM (Electrically Erasable and Programmable Read-Only Memory) that preserves tuner presets and system configuration information, even when the unit is not connected to a main power source. What's in the Box Stereo receiver, remote control, two AAA batteries, user's manual, and warranty/registration information.

Yamaha RX-797 Audio/Video Receiver Review

Yamaha RX-797 Audio/Video Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent 2-channel Stereo Receiver, for several reasons. Let me explain why I chose this brand/model over others and how I came to it. If you are in the market for Stereo Receiver, it may be useful for you.
A few months ago, I was listening to a jazz CD on my cheap ($200) Sony Home-Theater-In-A-Box and noticed that the sound was noticeably tighter than when I listened to it on my much more expensive, but significantly older stereo system. My old stereo system was purchased as separate components in 1993. It consisted of Sony STR-D990 Receiver ($400), single-disc Sony CDP-211 CD player ($100) and pair of Advent Baby II speakers ($250). Mind you, each of these components work and sound as good today as they did 15 years ago at the time of purchase (kudos to Sony for that), but I suppose I'm getting a little pickier now that I'm in my 30s. Music plays a MUCH larger role in my life than movies or television does (hence the cheap Home Theater set-up), so I decided I needed to upgrade.
PRIORITIES: 1) SPEAKERS--> 2) RECEIVER--> 3) CD PLAYER --> 4) CABLING/INTERCONNECTS
I decided that speakers were most important and thus the place to begin. After reading several reviews, I decided that Polk Audio Rti6s might be a good choice. I went to a retail store to listen to them and they sounded really good, but then the sales associate let me listen to the Polk Audio Lsi9s. Whew! They just blew me away. I had never heard anything like them. While the Rti6s run for $270, the Lsi9s are $900, but well worth it for that price, as a long-term investment (Polks come with a 5-year warranty). But I noticed that these run at 4 ohms and need a low-impedance amplifier/receiver, that is, one equipped with so-called "high current amplification," to drive them. Well, my old Sony did not have this function (it could take only 8-0hm current speakers). So, I looked all around for a receiver that could fit the bill and the Yamaha RX line became the obvious choice, after reading positive review after positive review. Since the Lsi9s can handle 200 watts per channel, I chose the RX-797 because while it has a power rating of 100 watts per channel at 8 ohms, it allows one to use two 4-ohm speakers and when doing so there is a power boost. Customer representatives from various retailers couldn't give me an exact watt rating (because Yamaha does not conduct tests at with 4-ohm speakers), but the general concensus was that it would increase to about 140 watts per channel with 4-ohm speakers. (I just didn't want to shortchange my speakers). I also chose this receiver because of the extremely low Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) rating of .019% as well as the Pure Direct and CD Direct modes for the lowest possible distortion. (Compare these features to say Onxyo and Harmon Kardon A/V receivers in this range and you'll see that the advantage lay with Yamaha).
When the RX-797 arrived, it not only lived up to but exceeded my expectations. Paired with the Lsi9s, I can hear a much, much crisper separation of instruments, and this is especially nice for my digitally remastered jazz CDs. I live in an apartment complex now and never have the need to turn the volume beyond the 9 o'clock position. I have gone up to 11 o'clock for testing (when I knew my neighbors weren't in!) and, as expected with these ratings, I couldn't hear any distortion whatsoever. (I can't wait until I move into a house for a larger sound stage). Other pluses: The knobs and controls have a nice solid feel and look great. It picks up many more FM radio stations than my old receiver, and the reception is noticeably cleaner. The remote is simple and sensible (just how a remote should be). My only gripe is that one cannot program CD players made by other manufacturers with this remote, but perhaps thats standard practice. This has other nice features such as being XM Satellite Radio Ready and dual room/dual source for those who are interested, but the main selling points for me were the 4-ohm capability, the wattage rating and the extremely low distortion. The fine looks and sensible controls/display and remote are icing on the cake.
I found one from an authorized dealer by a fluke for $350, but certainly would have been willing to pay the full $499. If you see one for less than $450, be sure to first confirm with the seller (or better yet Yamaha) that they are indeed an authorized dealer; otherwise your two-year warranty won't be honored if you run into problems (not that I'm expecting to).
In sum, if you are looking for a receiver with ample, clean power, extremely low distortion, the abilitiy to drive 4-, 6- or 8-ohm loads, excellent FM reception, and easy to use and well laid-out functions for 2 channel (as opposed to Home Theater) listening, I don't believe you can do better for under $600 than Yamaha's RX-797 receiver.

Yamaha R-S700BL Stereo Home Theater Receiver (Black) Review

Yamaha R-S700BL Stereo Home Theater Receiver (Black)

(More customer reviews)
Writing this review after using this product for about three months. In this era of HT receivers, stereo amps/receivers have become rare species. Point blank HT receivers are not for music. The Yamaha R-S700 is truly an outstanding stereo receiver. Yamaha's power ratings have always been extremely modest. The R-S700 does not sound like a 100W/channel receiver. Like the retro knobs!!....although they are made of plastic and not metal like in the amps from the 80s. Overall it looks tough and crude and thats exactly why I like the looks so much..........reminds me of the amps from the 80s.
I also looked at integrated amps/stereo receivers from Harman Kardon, Denon, Marantz, NAD. Also, I was looking for something with at least 100Ws/channel. Harman's HK3490 and Denon's DRA-697CI scored way low on THD.....too high for my liking:( NADC375BEE, NADM2, NADM3 (unbelieveably low THDs!!!!)are beyond my means at this time. Marantz-PM11S2 has a THD of 0.01% as opposed to Yamaha R-S700's 0.02% ....i.e., pretty much the same. The Marantz however costs $4000!!!!!. So this Yamaha was the only choice. Using Yamaha's CDC600 CD player with Burr Brown 192kHz/24-bit DAC. Because of this DAC, this CD player pumps crystal clear sound to the receiver. So this CD player and the receiver make quite a pair:D! I am using Yamaha NS777 as my towers and JBL ES250P is my sub. Overall, this makes a pretty good system if not outstanding. The price at which this receiver (with such low THD) is currently selling for on Amazon is IMHO very very reasonable. If you have the means go for NAD otherwise get this baby. I am happy with it. Thanks for reading.

First set I ordered were actually defective, producing a low, mild buzz. Contacted Amazon and they immediately sent me a new pair and allowed me 30 days to get the defective ones back! This was great service.
The new pair works as I was hoping, beautifully!! The construction is solid and very attractive. These speakers are smaller than I had thought though, maybe the volume of a box of hiking shoes, but this turned out to be an advantage for wall mounting and generally looking tasteful in my living room.
The sound however, is immaculate. Super crystal clear highs with robust midrange. I am looking forward to being able to get the series accompanying subwoofer though, since these speakers really have little bass response. But they shouldn't really. These speakers are entry level for high end speaker systems, where each speaker has an assigned task, these are for mids and highs which they do spectacularly.
2 of my brothers have JBLs and my father too, all have been overly pleased with the quality, performance, and durability of these speakers. I highly recommend them!

this is a good system. I am a fan of kenwood products and this is no let down. it has all the funtions you need for a good sound system. however, if I had it to do over, I would get the 503 model (the upgrade). It has enough added features to make it a great instead of good system.

A great upgrade to your old factory system, the DPX303 Double DIN CD receiver includes a large fine-dot display with four lines of text and a large multi-control wheel for quick and easy music search. Want to play your iPod or other portable music device? No problem! The DPX303 includes an illuminated front auxiliary input and is compatible with MP3/WMA/AAC files.

CD-R/RW Compatible In 2000, Kenwood incorporated a 3-beam optical pickup to improve player performance to meet the requirements for reading CD-R (CD Recordable) discs. Now in all new models, further advances in pickup performance deliver the capability to read CD-RW (CD Rewritable) discs.
MP3/WMA/AAC Compatible Burn a CD full of your favorite digital music files in the MP3, WMA, or AAC format and enjoy hours of music on a single disc (will not play Digital Rights-protected music files on disc).
iPod Ready If you own an iPod, you can connect it with the optional KCA-iP100 1-wire iPod Interface Cable for crystal clear digital audio playback. You'll supply power to your iPod and charge it while you enjoy your music.
Bluetooth Ready Add the Kenwood mobile phone hands-free unit to communicate safely without removing your hands from the steering wheel during driving. Connect the unit and enjoy clear phone communication through your stereo, with the DPX303 displaying the name and status of the other party and the signal strength, remaining battery power, etc. The unit can register up to five Bluetooth-compatible mobile phones and also download individual phone books for them. Radio Text (RDS) This function allows a radio station to transmit free-form textual information that can be either static (e.g., station slogans) or in sync with the programming, such as the title and artist of the currently-playing song.
Illumination Effect Kenwood will make hearts race even faster with the new "Emotional Illumination Effect." Turn the car audio system on or off, turn the volume up or down, or perform virtually any operation, and the illumination slowly blinks as if emotionally responding to your interaction. Visually transforming your car interior into a dramatic stage, Kenwood's lineup introduces a new sensory dimension to car audio with the "Emotional Illumination Effect."
Supreme When a music file is compressed, some frequencies signals are lost, particularly if it is encoded using a low bit rate. The Supreme technology is a Kenwood-original audio compensation technology that compensates for this loss and reproduces music in a more natural form, thereby making it possible to play music recorded using low bit rates (64k to 96k) in an audio-quality equivalent to music recorded using a higher bit rate (equivalent to 128k). Enjoy a natural, rich sound, even with lower compression ratios.

Onkyo TX-8555 Stereo Receiver Review

Onkyo TX-8555 Stereo Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this amplifier recently. I own a few older, well-regarded amplifiers (tube and solid state) that cost a lot more money when new, so my expectations were not high for this Onkyo. That said, I am stunned by how nice this amplifier sounds. I run the amplifier in Pure Audio mode (press the Pure Audio button on the front panel twice, then the blue LED comes on indicating Pure Audio mode). If I didn't know better, I'd swear this was a high-end tube amplifier. There is absolutely no background noise. No hiss. No hum. Nothing but dead silence. It makes music with silent passages jump to life. Whether I use this amplifier to drive Paradigm Titan speakers or Grado headphones, the quality of the sound reproduction and the dynamic range is absolutely remarkable, especially bass reproduction. Using a quality CD audio source, I can clearly hear every cymbal, with all the timber, every bass note, with all the string vibration from every finger pluck. For what this amplifier costs, I can't imagine looking elsewhere unless you need to drive large reference monitors. This amplifier is more than capable of driving anything up to full-sized floor speakers at reasonable volume. The amplifier includes an AM/FM tuner that works well enough. FM channels come in loud and clear using the included wire antenna. AM reception is a bit more difficult using the included loop antenna and its short wires, so at a minimum expect to add four to eight feet of wire to the AM antenna to get the loop well clear of any power cords. But that's really of little consequence if what you're looking for first and foremost is a high-quality stereo amplifier. I've listened to high-end amplifiers costing many times as much and few sound this pure and clean. The overall look and feel of the unit is professional grade, with just the right amount of heft. All controls have positive feedback and none feel flimsy. The volume knob is particularly nice, with a heavy, smooth action that is slow to respond, resulting in very fine, analog-like volume control. In brief summary, I doubt anyone with reasonable expectations will be disappointed. This stereo amplifier provides performance and quality well beyond its price level.

Harman Kardon HK 3490 120 Watt X 2 Stereo Receiver with XM Radio-ready Tuner and Dolby Virtual Speaker Review

Harman Kardon HK 3490 120 Watt X 2 Stereo Receiver with XM Radio-ready Tuner and Dolby Virtual Speaker
Average Reviews:

I used the HK 3480 (the precursor to this model) for five years and loved it. The 3490 is even better. The sound is more robust and full, not different, but just more refined. It easily powers my Klipsch Synergy speakers and would pair well with any mid-level speakers. With 120w even inefficient speakers will have more than a enough power to move air.
Further, the 3490 has an important new feature: digital inputs. This is a very nice option for those who have made the jump to an all digital music library and use a digital jukeboxes like the Roku Soundbridge or the Squeezebox. Both players have digital outs and pair up nicely with the 3490.
The difference in quality from digital inputs or analog is debatable, but to my ear, going from the 3480 with analog cables, to the 3490 with optical TOSLINK, there was an immediately improvement in clarity. Songs with delicate sound work came alive. Soft details were more apparent. It's been a great upgrade for me.
It's important to note that the 3490 doesn't leave analog fans in the cold either. It has a very nice tape loop and a wonderful gold plated stereo pickup. In short, whether you're library consists of vinyl or mp3s this amp will do it all.
I have always been a fan of Harmon Kardon, and I bought the older 3480 because I'm a strict fan of stereo music listening. The 3490 is a very smart update to the 3480, bringing it into the 21st century with a host of digital options. For those who rely on an iPod for music, there is specific iPod cradle for this amp that allows you to play your iPod's music effortless over the stereo while controlling it with the HK remote. This amp is also XM Radio ready, just plug in your XM receiver and the HK will allow you to control it.
It's very hard to find a subtle, high powered stereo receiver with these features. The market has sadly moved away to the home theater, multi-channel world, but I'm glad Harmon Kardon is still loyal to their stereo listeners.
Build quality is very nice. It's not a flashy amp, it doesn't light up the room with needless LEDs. It's very understated, and handsome. HK even includes two little inserts that hide the front inputs and bass, treble, and balance controls (nice if you don't want people messing with your settings, or you appreciate a clean look.)
Other than the digital options, the tape loop and the phono pickup, the amp does allow video switching and pass through should you want to integrate into your home theater. The other notable detail are the speaker posts. They allow the use of banana clips or allow you to secure naked wire in two different ways to the posts. This is nice if you don't have a lot of clearance behind the amp.
At this price point, there is simply nothing out there that can compete with this amp in terms of quality, performance, or features.

Pioneer Elite SC-35 - AV network receiver - 7.1 channel Review

Pioneer Elite SC-35 - AV network receiver - 7.1 channel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using the SC-35 for several months and I am loving every minute of it. Whether its audio from a TV program, a movie or music the SC-35 is to audio as high def is to video. My previous receiver was an old $300 Onkyo unit which was not by any means bad, but compared to the SC-35 it just doesn't hold a candle.
Sound Quality
--------------------------
The main benefit of the SC-35 is its ICE amp, a full range Class D amplifier which provides high power levels to multiple channels without generating a lot of heat. My older receiver would heat up and radiate this heat even while playing at modest sound levels, while the SC-35 can play louder (with no distortion) and only get warm to the touch. Channel separation is a big indicator of quality when talking about multi-channel amps and the SC-35 does not fail. You get crisp, distinct channels so there is no "blurring" between any of them. This translates to a much more dynamic "sound field" when listening to multi-channel soundtracks such as those found in movies. You really feel immersed, with sounds coming at you from all angles, even top down which was a new one for me.
Auto Setup really works
--------------------------
My old unit had an "auto setup" and calibration feature. I put the mic in the position where my head would be and let it do its thing. I didn't think the Onkyo did a good job of setting things up because the sound was not really much different than the default settings...however the SC-35 surprised me once again. After running the auto setup on the SC-35, everything sounded BETTER. I was amazed at how well it compensated for speaker distances and room acoustics. I guess I'm jaded so I often write-off auto setup anything as a sales gimmick but on the SC-35 it works great.
Fully Customizable Inputs
--------------------------
Instead of taking the "one size fits all" approach, the SC-35 lets you decide how to configure your a/v inputs. I am using all HDMI connections except for my XBOX360, which is component video. I was able to set up all the relevant inputs using the on-screen menu, label them so that the receiver shows the name of the device rather than some generic "aux 1, aux 2" text and I disabled all of the inputs I was not using so I don't need to tab through them when selecting the one I want. Another nice thing about the SC-35 is its excellent video conversion quality. I can connect just about any type of video source to this receiver, but have it output to my TV in 1080P via an HDMI cable. It not only reduces cable clutter, but it also has very high quality upscaling so lower resolution sources will look their best on your modern HDTV screen.
Excellent Auto Select Output
--------------------------
There is an option to let the receiver decide the best way to output audio based on the input signal - and I love the way it just works. You don't need to change to "stereo mode" for music, it will automatically detect that the signal is stereo and output it only to the L & R channels (which is the best way to listen to stereo sound). It also knows when to kick over to Dolby PLII mode during certain TV shows, but most of the TV shows I watch are on HD channels and therefore have a 5.1 DD soundtrack. The auto select feature is the most useful when using my HTPC, as content on the HTPC can vary from 1 to 6 channels...and it's always on the ball playing it back correctly, so I never need to manually choose a playback mode.As far as negatives go, it's really heavy and it's very big. Not really negatives for me, but functionally and from a design standpoint there are no drawbacks to the SC-35. Its sound performance will match or surpass many pre-amp/amp setups at a fraction of the cost...and while it is more expensive than the average A/V receiver, it's well worth the premium. I only paid $970 for mine including shipping, but if the lowest price was $1,500 I'd still consider it a great deal. I've owned receivers from Kenwood, Yamaha, Onkyo and even Denon...none of them were bad but they all had caveats. The SC-35 is the most expensive receiver I have owned but it is also by far the best.
Whether you are an audio elitist or just someone who wants excellent sound for watching movies, playing video games and listening to music it is highly improbable that you would be disappointed with the SC-35. Just like Pioneer's Kuro Plasma TVs, the SC-35 is a receiver in a class of its own and it will probably be the best receiver of its kind for a long time to come.
Setup Note:
I'd like to mention that when you are setting up the speakers on this unit, if you set the front speakers to something other than "small", you will disable the subwoofer when playing back stereo music. Set them to small to have all low frequency sound sent to your subwoofer.

Got this in the mail a couple of weeks ago. It is a very attractive unit, couple of things I don't care for.
1. Can't ever turn off the bright power on light. Apparently some people couldn't remember to turn off the unit when they killed the display, so now I have this bright white light that won't turn off.
2. HDMI passthrough only kinda works. The main reason I bought this thing was to pass HDMI from my various devices through the single source (and for its audio sync capabilities). Unfortunately for me, while my HTPC straight to the tv works like a champ, I only get a black screen for video (audio works fine though...) when passing through this device. From what I can tell this is a common problem with the 1600 (go check out the forum for owners).
3. HK support kinda sucks. Sent an email last week. No reply. Called them during business hours, had to leave a message. So far no help from them.
I have worked around this by just not using the HDMI, buttt...was kinda the whole reason I bought this, now its just like the one i replaced it with, bummer. In the end it looks pretty good and works pretty good, just not as good as they would want you to believe.
**** UPDATE ****
Short update, about one year after purchase I stopped by the Harman Kardon site to see if they were ever going to update this thing to fix my HDMI issues, and lo and behold... they did! There is a product update link on the 1600's support page:
[...]
Support Tab --> Product Updates --> Download the update.
This update is supposed to update a few bugs, and most importantly the HDMI issue of not passing video from random devices (media pc's, game consoles, etc..). I downloaded and installed (you'll need a 400Mb or larger thumb drive ((not sure why cause it was tiny, but that's what it says)) to do the update). The update was straightforward and took less than 5 minutes once you have the thumb in there (front panel usb port).
Anyway....the video now flows through, my media pc can now pass 5.1 (or 7.1) and the video actually looks nicer than when it went straight to my tv (deeper blacks or something, looks good). Harman support is still pretty poor, but the product performs so dang good for what it cost, and looks great doing it. Took this thing from 3 to 5 stars, light is still annoying but I'll let it slide.
