BIC PL-200 Acoustech Platinum Series Subwoofer Review

BIC PL-200 Acoustech Platinum Series Subwoofer

(More customer reviews)
I posted this "mini review" on a well known forum, seems there are a lack of reviews on this product, so, hope this helps.
Well, I finally got my PL-200 today. I have been testing and calibrating for the last couple hours.
I did a comparison of the PL-200 versus my Axiom EP350 sub. PL-200 = $329.00 and my EP350 = $758.00
The results surprised me, but not so much really. I will just go ahead say this. The PL-200 kicked my EP350's arse!
Now, keep in mind, I have much more testing to do. I first adjusted both subs to 75db using my digital sound level meter. C weighted & set to slow. The first thing that caught my attention was while running my test tones starting at 80HZ down to 15hz for each sub independently, was my EP350 would not even register any decibels at 22hz. The PL-200 easily hit 76db @22hz. I knew then the Axiom sub was in trouble.
Then I went on and ran MCACC at full auto, tweaked my levels, then ran MCACC advanced mode keeping the speaker settings.
I first played a lot of favorite songs, from the deep bass of "Peg" from Steely Dan to Dream Theater to Queensryche to Metallica's Black CD. The PL-200 filled out my room (4500cuft) nicely, no boominess, no muddiness, just clean well rounded tight bass. Kick drums hit hard and in my face. I pretty much compared a lot of songs with and without the Axiom sub.
I have each sub in the far corners of the room right outside my Axiom M80 towers. I must say I'm lovin the PL-200 so far.
Unfortunately, I only have 1 Blue ray disc at this time and it was Twilight New Moon. Not the best movie for lows. But, I'll have to wait for some more movies from Netflix to test the PL-200 further.
But what I did hear (both subs running) was nothing short of amazing. I can't imagine how Dark Knight or Transformers will sound. Because some of the wolf fighting scenes in Twilight rocked the house, everything was shaking. I could "feel" and hear the walls rattle.
So to summarize the PL-200 with just a couple hours of use, I would say this:
If I had to do this over again, I would have just bought 2 PL-200's instead of the Axiom and saved some money. The PL-200 is an incredible value and when cranked up some, will produce test tones down to 20hz and 18hz nicely. The Axiom EP350 just can't do that, and it's more than twice the price. I'll try to report back here when I get some more bass intense movies, plus I need to tweak some more.
As a side note, I'm really thinking about replacing the PL-200 stock amp with the 500 watt Bash amp, just for fun. But believe me, the stock amp rocks! This is more than enough low end thunder that I will ever need. I just can't see investing $1200.00 plus for a high end sub. One of the reasons I went for the PL-200 to begin with was I wanted 2 subs and I can spend the money I saved, on the Velodyne SMS-1 Sub Eq. I should be ordering the SMS-1 in a couple weeks. This will round out my system for awhile.
Below is my gear if anyone is interested: Take care!
52" Samsung HDTV, Axiom M80 fronts, VP100 center, EP350 subwoofer, Samson Surrounds, Pioneer VSX9040 HDMI AVR, Odyssey Khartago Monoblock Extremes,
Xbox 360, Sony PS3

Klipsch Synergy F-30 Premium Dual 8-Inch Floor-Standing Speaker Review

Klipsch Synergy F-30 Premium Dual 8-Inch Floor-Standing Speaker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had these speakers for several weeks now and have been very impressed. I am using them for the front left and right channels on my Home Theater System.
Prior to this I started with a Samsung HTIB and then went with the Klipsch Quintet SL with separate sub powered by an Onkyo reciever. I replaced the left and right SL's with the F-30's.
Some observations -
The F-30's blow the sound from the SL's out of the water. The sound clarity and the way the F-30's fill the room even at low volumes is so much better (and I thought the SL's sounded sweet. These take the sound to another planet, they are so much better its not even fair to compare them.
The F-30's require much less power to drive them. I had to reduce the signal to my left and right speakers by 4 levels as they produced so much more volume than the SL's. Both music and HT sound are exceptional.
The wife wanted these sent back when she saw the size of them (they are not bookshelf speakers) but changed her mind after one night of listening to them. She normally isn't one to notice much in audio quality but she did with these.
The sound that these put out was so dramatically better than I ever anticipated that I have ordered a new high end Klipsch center channel to bring all the fronts up to the next level. The rear speakers will be next. You will not regret purchasing these speakers. Look for occasional price drops for the best deal. If I could give these six stars I would.
The only downside to buying these was that I feel compelled to upgrade the other speakers now.

I must admit that I chose them over Grado, Beyerdynamic, and Ultrasone, simply because of the color. Please keep in mind that these are hi-fi headphones. They were not designed to be plugged into an iPod. Most consumer electronics with a headphone jack will only output 32ohms. These headphones are rated at 62. I have a basic headphone amp that outputs 51ohms, and it still isn't enough! I have to turn my computer volume up to 100% and the amp up to about 50% to attain an acceptable listening volume. Even then, its clear that bass and mids can use more "oompf." I'm not an advocate of any kind of hi-fi audio voodoo, but I will probably end up getting a new headphone amp soon with more power. Sound stage is enormous, but there is a bit more isolation than I have experienced with Grado's. I will update my review at that time. I should point out, thought, that the pulley suspension system on the headband is extraordinary. It makes these the most comfortable headphones I have ever put on my head. They adjust automatically each time you put them on. Combined with the velour ear pads, these can easily be worn for hours.

Beyer Dynamic DT 990 Premium 600 OHM Headphones Review

Beyer Dynamic DT 990 Premium 600 OHM Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, these aren't nearly as hard to drive as you'd assume from their impedance. I was able to get decent volume out of everything I connected it to form a proper desktop amp, to straight out of the onboard sound from my netbook. They are of course, not being driven properly from something without an adequate voltage swing, but neither are they useless without a beefy amp.
On to the meat of the review. "How do they sound," I hear you asking. In one word, bright, or in two, very bright. Their metaphorical albedo is off the charts. The highs are quite pronounced, but in a very smooth and simultaneously crisp manner. Hardly peaky at all, without transient spikes leaving you constantly fiddling with the volume. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the bass is simply amazing for an open headphone. Its deep, plentiful, and tightly controlled, with the kind of snap you'd expect from a small sealed subwoofer. It doesn't have the same quantity, but the quality is similar. I'd still characterize them as bright because the treble substantially exceeds the bass. The mids are recessed in the sense that they are softer than the ends of the spectrum, but they are very clear and not muddied by the bass at all. At least at moderate volumes. At higher volumes however they seem to become even more recessed, and at extreme volumes it begins to sound like someone left the midrange driver out of a 3-way speaker. However, if you value your hearing this shouldn't be too much of a problem.
I think their biggest plus is their soundstaging. Especially when combined with positional audio. An HTRF fooled me into believing my pet parrot, who was behind me, had chirped when it was actually just the soundtrack to the show I was watching. I don't play FPSs very often anymore, but they'd be great for the task. If you turned down the BGM a little, the deep bass and crisp highs will provide satisfying blasts, booms, and gunshots. If you're not a treble head though, it may be to bright for the BGM in most movies.
I'm not a treble head however, so I decided to return mine after a week of evaluation and more than 100 hours of burn in. I couldn't listen to them for more than an hour without the treble grating on me, and I can't justify keeping a separate can just for gaming, since I don't do as much of it as I used to.If you are looking for a can just for gaming then this probably deserves to be on your short list. For music or movies? I'd say only if you are a serious treble head. The DT990s aren't for me, but they may be just right for you.

In a word "Excellent" The sound is awesome. What you don't know is how easy it is to hang these speakers on the wall. Part of my project was getting wires dropped inside the wall instead of running them under carpet or around the baseboard. The installer said these Klipsch Synergy S-20 were the easiest installation he had ever done. The sound is great. I was really surprised how well the speakers delivered the bass. Most surrounds can't do that well. These can.

These speakers are my very first, component setup, home theater/stereo speakers. Purchased them 2 years ago along with a 75watt/channel HK receiver directly after moving into my own apartment. My satisfaction level of these speakers has been somewhat of a roller coaster ride. Upon initial setup, I was a little unimpressed. I expected "bigger" sound. They produce somewhat of a colder sound (as opposed to the warm sound most people desire from theater grade speakers). Bass isn't extremely heavy, but the high ends sore beautifully. But my liking for these speakers grew after watching a good number of movies on them. Which leads me to my short, but sweet opinion of these...
Great for movies, so-so for music. I've heard other reviewers, professional and user alike, say that same thing and I couldn't agree more. They deliver the necessary punch for action scenes and dialog sounds natural coming out of them. I think its mainly due to the horn that Klipsch uses for their tweeter, that gives the ability for gun shots and car crashes to sound awesome and life like. The surround sound output of blu-rays really manage to dip into their low range capabilities as well. A good example of this is a scene from the blu-ray "Taken". Theres a bass thump thats supposed to be the opening for a concert scene that made these speakers send a smooth waterfall of bass from the front to the back of the room.
But for music they just don't really have it. To this day, I'm still wishing for more "umph" out of them. I now have a center and subwoofer connected to my system that corrected this, but thats beside the point. On their own, I just wasn't feeling the price tag coming out in the music. I'm sure if I added more wattage to them, I'd get a bigger sound, but I don't think it'd be a warmer sound.
Over all though, if you're looking for tower speakers to add to your theater sound setup, couldn't recommend more. If you're looking for a hi-fi stereo setup to listen to music on, might want to look else where.

Boston Acoustics Duo-I Plus iPhone/iPod Dock AM/FM Stereo Radio and Clock Functions (Gloss White) Review

Boston Acoustics Duo-I Plus iPhone/iPod Dock AM/FM Stereo Radio and Clock Functions (Gloss White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Duo-i because I needed something for my bedroom that served three purposes: a radio for general listening, a quality iPod player, and a set of good-sounding, external speakers for my 19" TV.
Positives:
The radio produces surprisingly booming lows for its size, and exceptionally detailed high end. The clarity of the speakers is stunning. The radio can easily fill a room with sound. Besides an iPod dock on the top, the radio offers two auxiliary inputs for flexibility. I use the rear aux RCA inputs for my bedroom TV, and the front aux 1/8" input will come in handy if I ever want to run my other MP3 players through the radio. The automatically-dimming display is a novel touch, too.
The BIIIIIG negative:
The radio has booming lows and very clear high end, but there's not enough in between. Apparently, Boston Acoustics tried too hard to give this radio a big sound, and, in the process, forgot that a radio this size should still have a good midrange presence. The radio seems to lack terribly in the 600Hz-3kHz range. Not only does this "reshape" the music, but it renders the AM radio worthless -- talk shows sound boomy and unintelligible, even with the bass all the way down and the treble all the way up. This wouldn't have been a problem, except Boston Acoustics did not provide a midrange EQ level control, and this radio needs one in the worst way.
In fact, in order to get acceptable sound when running my TV's audio through the Duo-i, I have to leave my TV's cheesy, little, internal speakers turned on. They compensate by providing some of the desired mid frequencies that the Duo-i lacks.
Because the low end is too loud relative to the rest of the frequencies, I experimented by loosely plugging the rear bass ports with my fingers. The bass response suddenly tightened up and became more natural-sounding. So my radio's bass ports are now loosely corked. (I even wrote to Boston Acoustics and suggested they begin shipping their radios with a couple different sets of "port corks" for discerning listeners.)
Summary:
If you typically listen to your stereo with a smiley-faced graphic EQ, you'll love this radio. But, if you prefer a flatter frequency response and/or listen to AM radio, the Duo-i is not the radio for you.
Please note that I am a recording engineer by trade, so I am going to be more critical of audio quality than most.

Kanto SYD5SILVER SYD 5 iPod Speaker System, Rocket Ship Silver Review

Kanto SYD5SILVER SYD 5 iPod Speaker System, Rocket Ship Silver
Average Reviews:

My wife likes to listen to music in her studio, but didn't want something too obtrusive. Her studio can get noisy (glass lampwork) so she needed something with some power, but still able to faithfully reproduce sound quality, especially during quiet times. I bought her the Kanto Syd-5 for Christmas and she LOVES it. The cabinet is beautiful and if there's not an iPod docked on top, you don't notice it on the bookshelf it rests on. I read that the cabinet is made with the same finish they use for high-end pianos, and I believe it.
PROS: Super sound quality, plenty of bass, and plenty of power if you want to crank it up. I tried hooking it up to a 32" LCD TV via the S-video, and while it wasn't HD, it was pretty good. You could pair it with a flat screen and maybe a DVD player and have a pretty decent home theater. The remote is OK and lets you adjust treble/mid-range/bass.
CONS: Not many, but this is one heavy unit (25+ lbs). You won't want to move it around too much. We have the black finish, and while it's beautiful, fingerprints and dust are noticable.
As far as pricing, the Syd-5 was in the $4-500 range when it came out, but I got it for $250. I've heard the Bose Sounddock (both models), and the Syd-5 outperforms them easily for a (lot)less money. If you don't need portability and if looks and price/performance are important, then you can't do better than the Kanto Syd-5

Beats by Dr. Dre Beatbox iPod® Dock High Performance iPod® Dock Review

Beats by Dr. Dre Beatbox iPodĀ® Dock High Performance iPodĀ® Dock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I spent many weeks researching high-end iPod speakers, including Monster/Beats, Bose, Kicker, B&W, Chestnut Hill, Polk, Audyssey, Cambridge Soundworks, Boston Acoustics, Sonos, and Altec Lansing. When I started the process, I had a simple goal: find the best sounding iPhone/iPod speaker available, with the best quality, for the lowest price possible. I had been warned that many of the more expensive systems justify the extra cost by adding a bunch of rarely-used features (video out, alarm clocks, HD radio, instrument jacks, internet radio, etc.) instead of better speaker quality. Sure enough, when I started looking at the different models, I was quickly overwhelmed by a bunch of features that had absolutely nothing to do with how good the thing actually sounds. So I spent some time asking a few friends, vendors, and online forums about all of these new capabilities. In the end, I learned that sound quality is (by far) the most important buying criteria, and other than that, there are really only two other features you need to care about. They are (a) Battery capability and (b) Bluetooth. And those two features only matter in specific cases. Here they are:
1) Battery - if you spend a lot of time at the beach, camping, or at a park and want to be able to play your music there, you'll need something with a battery. If you plan on listening to this at home or on your deck, the battery really doesn't matter.
2) Bluetooth - if you use an iPhone to store and play music and you also like to keep your phone in your hands for texting, e-mail, apps, or calls, OR if you change your music a lot (skip songs, change artists, etc.) then you'll want something with Bluetooth. This allows you to keep your iPhone in your hand (for texting, skipping songs, changing artists, etc.) and wirelessly stream music to the speaker. Bluetooth also gives you more possibilities for music storage devices (iPod & iPad & Zune & laptop, etc.)...not just an iPod. The downside of connecting with Bluetooth is that since you are not docked, your iPhone isn't charging. This could cause battery issues if you are playing music for a long period of time without being docked.
Other than those two features...ignore everything else that comes with these things. You already have an alarm clock, your iPhone already has Pandora and internet radio, you have other A/V gear in your house for watching/downloading TV, your phone already has a speakerphone, and you can probably get your favorite AM/FM radio station content over the internet anyway. It's also worth noting that if you're looking for something that could double as a sound system for your TV, you're actually better off getting a good TV surround sound system for the same price and buying a cheaper iPod speaker. You'll get a better speaker system for the TV, you won't have a big speaker sitting on your TV set, and you won't have the hassle of reconnecting/disconnecting a big iPod speaker every time you want to use it in another room.
Okay - now that we have that out of the way, that leaves the main criteria, sound quality. If you read enough reviews and talk to enough audiophiles, you'll learn that there is general agreement that the four best iPod speakers out there now for sound quality are:
1) B&W Zeppelin
2) Beats by Dre Beatbox
3) Bose SoundDock Portable (NOT SoundDock Series II!)
4) Audyssey Audio Dock
If you ask people who handle audio for a living, they'll say that the B&W Zeppelin has the best sound/sonics. Unfortunately, it isn't as loud as others in this category, costs a ton of money, and unless you're an audio engineer, you won't really notice a difference between the Zeppelin sound and the three others. Add the fact that many people have reported quality issues and poor customer service...and you quickly realize that the Zeppelin isn't worth the money. So we take that off the list as too expense without much additional value. That leaves us with the Beatbox, the SoundDock, and the Audyssey Audio Dock. Here's how to pick between them.
- If you don't care about bluetooth or battery, get the Beats by Dre Beatbox. It's the best sounding (and loudest) system of the three and the quality is fantastic. But it doesn't have bluetooth or a battery. It's just a REALLY good speaker.
- If you want a battery, get the Bose SoundDock Portable. It sounds great and the battery works well (buy an extra battery if you can!)
- If you want bluetooth, get the Audyssey Audio Dock. It sounds incredible (almost as good as the beatbox) and the bluetooth capability works perfect.
In the end I realized I don't care about Bluetooth or a Battery, so I bought the beatbox by Dre....and I couldn't be happier. This thing really sounds unbelievable with rap, classical and everything in between...and an incredible sounding speaker is really all I was looking for in the first place.
I should also note...if you get this far and decide this is just too much to spend, then buy either the Logitech S715i or the Altec Lansing iM600. Those are both great systems for the price.

Hope this helps others!

Average Reviews:

Very good sound for a "Mini Shelf" system but then, it is not very small so make sure you have room and able to hold 146 pounds. The Bass boost is in deed heavy bass and vibrates things (probably too good for late hours in most places). Sound is still pretty good without bass boost with a little extra volume. I think Sony needs to make a half bass boost which probably would be the best sound on many occassions.
Like the Ipod input for my use and also so friends caneasily bring and play music they like. It looks "cool" but not sophistcated, Not the greatest sound
but it is good and for the price, I have no regrets.
