As the proud owner of a new Yamaha RX-N600 I wanted to comment on some of the issues I have heard of with this product. Most of the issues are really not issues at all, they just need to properly set up the RX-N600 and the products they use with it.
I have heard people say that the RX-N600 can't handle iPod video. It does, but to make it work you need to turn ON the video output of your iPod and it works great. Both videos and photos are displayed on your TV and the iPod is controllable with the RX-N600 remote control.
I've also heard people say that the Net/USB doesn't work with an MP3 player. Here again, I found that all I needed to do was set my MP3 player (or for that matter my Cellphone MP3 player) to be a mass storage device and the Net/USB works perfectly!
The last, and to me most important problem I have heard about is that people say the Network music won't work with Microsoft Media Player 11. At first I found the same problem, but when I called Yamaha Tech Support, they were very helpful. They e-mailed me an RX-N600 software update file, which I installed through the RX-N600 USB port. It worked perfectly the first time I tried it. I now have no trouble streaming music from my PC to the RX-N600.
All of the above, plus I love having access to internet radio through my RX-N600. If you don't know about this, it's like a TV-Guide for internet radio stations all over the world - 2,000 of them! With the on-screen menu, you just point and click to pick a country, a genre, etc. It's really amazing and very enjoyable. I don't think anyone else is manufacturing a product that gives you all of this, plus a really good A/V home theater receiver anywhere near this price. Keep up the good work Yamaha!

7.2 SLS Audio Surround Sound Speaker set with Two Subwoofers Review

I've had several surround sound systems over the years and everyone was the same ... the voice track was always muffled by the sound effects. Keep turning it up just to try and hear the voices in the movie. Many friends have had the same problem and still do. "I" no longer have that problem with this SLS 7.2 system. It's unbelievably good ... so good that I bought another set this time the 5.1 for our other TV in a different room. The sound is incredible, crisp and clear. Don't forget it can also be loud (like the movie theatre) if need be. If you've been looking for a home theatre sound system then this one is it. You wont be disappointed. Very pleased I finally made the purchase. "These American made speakers ROCK the house" Quality is outstanding. We are very happy we opted to buy this instead of Bose or the other highly price systems.

Yamaha RX-V765BL 665 Watt 7-Channel Home Theater Receiver Review

Yamaha RX-V765BL 665 Watt 7-Channel Home Theater Receiver
Average Reviews:

I had been looking at several of the Yamaha models through the spring of 2009, as well as its competitor's (Sony, Onkyo, Denon), for an upgrade of my ancient Sony receiver (one of the first Pro-logic receivers). I just installed a set of Definitive Technology Mythos speakers ordered through Amazon.com, including a power-hungry Mythos Three center channel. I wanted this receiver to be the core of my Home Theater as it's primarily use for improving my Sony Blu-ray and TiVo Series3 HD DVR experience.
Sports, such a baseball is vivid with the upscale feature from 1080i to 1080p (although it has not yet improved the performance of my Seattle Mariners). 1080i broadcast shows such as Chuck, both sound and look great.
The optional YDS-11SL iPod dock works well with both a 4th generation Nano and an 80G iPod Classic, including the videos.
What is worth the wait is the clean layout on the back, the heft of the discrete amp, and the Blu-ray friendly support with both the scene button and the Decoders for HD audio formats: Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Yes they do make a difference in your home theater experience.
The audio calibration microphone works as advertised. Silent Cinema (headphone mode) is also a nice feature.
What could be improved - You need to keep the manual next to you for the first week to figure out some of the controls such as accessing all of the iPod controls with the dock. I was also sorry to see HD Radio(tm) missing from this "top of the mid-range" Yamaha's. The older RX-V863 has it, but this one doesn't. Also the four scene buttons are not programmable. I wanted to program the TV scene button for my TiVo (HDMI #2), no luck.
In the end, if you are looking for a quality receiver that performs well on both movies and music, and can drive your amp hungry speakers to their potential, look no farther that this RX-V765. It really was worth the wait.

Polk Audio CSI A4 Center Channel Speaker (Single, Cherry) Review

Polk Audio CSI A4 Center Channel Speaker (Single, Cherry)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The good:
* Great Polk Rti A sound--matches the rest of the speakers in the line perfectly
* Real wood speakers at this price point is amazing
* Cherry finish is really quite beautiful
* Solid high-quality construction
No real complaints, but just a suggestion: If you're matching this with large tower fronts (for example, the RTi A7 or RTi A9) in a home theatre system, consider upgrading to the A6. It can better keep up with the bigger speakers.

Yamaha RX-V3800BL 7.1-Channel Network Home Theater Receiver (Black) Review

Yamaha RX-V3800BL 7.1-Channel Network Home Theater Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I confess, I am a electronic consumer nut. After "getting by" on SVHS and component hookups for my electronic equipment, I bit the bullet and started looking for a receiver that had enough HDMI inputs, enough SVHS inputs, an input for my iPod and RCA-phono/USB-phono, LAN and computer. Previously, I had a Pioneer VSX-9500, then a Yamaha model with about 5 SVHS inputs, and a Denon AVR 4802R with 7 SVHS inputs. After a couple of months of searching through the usual suspects, including the other brands I have had, I settled on the Yamaha RX-V3800 in black because it allowed me to do enough of what I wanted to do from my shopping list I mentiond earlier.
First of all, I was surprised to find that all the receivers I looked at had downsized their number of connections from four years ago when I bought my Denon receiver. I was having to look at receivers costing 2 to 3 times as much as the RX-V3800 before I could find one with as many inputs, and I found even Yamaha's RX-Z11 had the same number as the RX-V3800, and it ran almost $5,000.00. Then, I thought about it... what were the inputs I really used most of all: SVHS, BluRay, HD-DVD, DVR, DVR-VHS combo, CD player, cassette, and phono. There was one input remaining that I was able to use with a junction box for ED-Beta,Laser Disc, XM radio, and an DVR-R recorder, so the Yamaha RX-V3800 would do without me having to compromise too much.
But, let's get to the machine and all of it's pluses:
The sound... It is terrific! With my previous system, I had to gerry-rig the side speakers using a quadraphonic synthesizer, but the RX-V3800 has the following speaker connections: left-front, right-front, center, left-side, right-side, left-rear, right-rear and sub-woofer. My previous set-up had a rear-center, and after reading a little, I found you could hook-up a rear center by using the RCA connection labeled "Single (SB)." (There's a "SURBACK PRESENCE" that can be used, also, but it was designed for when you only wanted one rear channel). When you set-up the speakers, Yamaha has a special optimizer microphone you plug into the front of the unit and it balances your speakers based on where you have the microphone placed.
The four HDMI inputs are great, too, because it allows me to have the best picture and sound from my BluRay, HD-DVD, Satellite Receiver, and DVR-VHS unit.
The Internet radio is easy to use, and it is programmed with plenty of stations. The selection of stations with the Yamaha remote is easy and the sound is wonderful.
The iPod Yamaha YDS-10 dock option is a must if you have an iPod. Quite frankly, I probably won't use my phono, now, except to make digital recordings of out-of-date vinyl recordings because of the ease of operation of the iPod through the docking station, especially if you have the 80 or 160 GB model of iPod with all the music they can hold.
The XM set-up with the XM Extreme is nice and integrates smoothly. I, actually, use an older XM radio through two RCA inputs, but with the XM Extreme directly connected, it is easier to use.
The computer set-up is not as easy as the manual would make you believe, but it is easier if you do the following: Make sure your PC has XP Service Pack Two or Vista on it AND you have Windows Media Player 11 installed, have your 232 Serial Ports between the computer and the Yamaha RX-V-3800 connected, and have a networking guide for your operating system. Once you have those done, you go into Windows Media Player, select "Library" at the top, and then select "Media Sharing" to allow the tunes on your PC to be shared with your receiver. For other PC's on your LAN, it would be best for you to already have those tunes shared, but if you connect an iPod, that might not be necessary. While I am at it, I will say this about Media Player ll: once you've checked the right boxes, it does a good job.
Overall, I am extremely pleased with the Yamaha RX-V3800. I did think that they could have done a better job with the manual... for example, in setting-up the PC, you start reading the instructions and it refers you to two other sections of the manual, and when things just didn't seem to jell, one finds that later in the manual, they show you how to do the set-up more thoroughly and manually, if needed. That said and done, though, I would buy this receiver again. I do wish it had more inputs, but then again, most people don't have as much to hook-up as I do. If there were a four-and-a-half stars rating, I would give it, but I'm stuck giving it only four.

UPDATE: It is two months after first doing this review, and I still love this receiver. I bought a great pair of outside speakers that look like rocks, HiFi Works 30020 HFW 6.5-Inch Rock Speakers (Pair), and use the "Room 2" with the X-10 Powermid remote extender, X10 POWERMID Remote Control Extender Kit PM5900. This set-up is wonderful! I sometimes have the iPod play outside, while inside they are watching TV on the HDTV. One caution, when setting-up the "Room 2," it will ask you what is the initial volume you want the "room" to have. I had not paid that much attention to those dB settings on the volume you get across the screen of the TV, and the first time I used Room 2, you could hear the music over a block away... Those speakers didn't flinch and their tone was terrific! (Unfortunately, our house was so sound proof, I didn't know I was blowing-out the neighbors.) Using the X-10 remote control extenders really is a blessing. If you use the extenders in other areas of the house, be sure to have your remote receiver up close to the Yamaha.

MSI FX420-001US 14-Inch Laptop - Black Review

MSI FX420-001US 14-Inch Laptop - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this laptop for a week now and its nothing short of what is advertised. The Sandy Bridge i5 processor really takes the highlight for this laptop. When I first got it, it felt light. Like REAL Unbelievably Light for all these specs. I was looking for a sandy bridge i5 laptop with USB 3.0 and this just fits right in the budget.
What I did not expect was the screen size. I've owned three 14 inchers before this and the screen size on those was a lot larger if i recall correctly. Because it has a 1366x728 display, the screen is now wide instead of square, hence the screen is wide like a 15 inch , but has the height of a 13 inch laptop.
Apart from the LED screen there was one other let down. The 500GB hard drive was just 5400rpm and hence makes the whole system operate like a snail. i5 or i7, the hard drive speed kills the whole purpose of sandy bridge and 6GB Ram.
I immediately ordered a 128GB Steady State Drive Kingston SSDNow V Series 128 GB SATA 3 GB/s 2.5- Inch Solid State Drive with Desktop Upgrade Kit Bundle SNV425-S2BD/128GB and installed it. Now nothing can slow this baby down. If you are considering going for this laptop, get a Steady State Drive to maximize performance, unless you don't really care about performance.
The Keyboard is quite a treat.
Finally, the 1GB Radeon graphics Card runs side by side with the Intel internal graphics. The Intel default upon startup but as applications need the graphics power, the 1GB takes over. I have never seed this actually happen though. I ran NFS Shift 2 after i set up the graphics options in the Catalyst Control Center but I saw no difference. Maybe I still have to tinker with the settings a bit more to get the card to work.
To Sum it up
Pros:
i5 Processor
6GB Ram
Chicklet Keyboard
Lightweight as nothing else
Great THX sound (surround)
HDMI out
USB 3.0
Multitouch Trackpad ( although the beaded feeling "boils my blood" sometimes )
Cons:
Slow Hard Drive
Smaller LED Screen than expected
Laptop gets hot under heavy load (playing 1080p movies over HDMI & Video Conversion. etc..)
They say it is an anti finger print design but its not anti grease ( oil and grease is easily transferred to the lid )
Loads of Bloatware Applications ( I uninstalled most of them as soon as i got it )
Hope this helps

the e604's sound great on rack toms and snare. nicely balanced and fairly transparent for mics in this price range. they are also physically small, which makes micing a kit easier. haven't tried them on anything else yet, but so far they are doing the job and doing it well.
