(More customer reviews)I must admit that I am partial to Canon, but this camera is one of the best I have ever owned!!! It may not have the most megapixels, or be the best, most high end piece of electronics out there, but for the average Joe, this is a phenomenal investment!!!
For most people's purposes, the pictures are always sharp and clear enough (note that as with any camera, movement can mess up or blur a shot), and with sufficient megapixels for editing and blowing up without pixellation. There are enough options on this camera to necessitate a college class on photography for how to use them all, but it's ease of use is simple enough for anyone to use right out of the box if you just want to take pictures. it is a WYSIWYG camera, but it does sooooooo much more if you know what you're doing...
What I thoroughly enjoy the most about this camera is its versatility. I bought it specifically for underwater photography and video for our family scuba trip to Baja, and was pleasantly surprised at the clarity and ease of use of this feature. No, you can't (shouldn't) take it below 30 feet, and no, it's not the high end Nikonos underwater camera with multiple flashes and all the gadgets that you can take to 160 feet or more, but for a day out snorkeling or family scuba diving, this works perfectly. AND, I can use it above, in and under the water, without having to change any settings whatsoever.
Great for the pool, the picnic, or the beach, this camera is the most versatile tool in any photegraphic arsenal!!!
If you want a sturdy, easy to use camera, but one that has tons of options for multiple effects that you won't worry about getting ruined in ANY weather conditions, and especially one that won't leave you with a second mortgage, then this is the one for you!!!

(More customer reviews)I did have high hopes for this camera, even though it is priced so low. The reviews that could find were pretty good. First the good: It is a solidly built, attractive camea that fits well in the hand. The image stablization seems very good. After going through several cameras destroyed by damage I was looking for something I could take cycling, hiking, etc and have it survive modest drops, rain and sand. It might be that this camera will handle the elements well, but I was so unhappy with the quality of the pictures and the camera's performance that I wil be returning it today.
The first big negative is that it takes 4-5 seconds to start up. Given that the most recent coolpix cameras are basically instant on their startup I really don't see an excuse for this. Second, the auto focus is extremly slow, often 2+ seconds. And finally the shutter lag after depressing the button is 2 seconds. This means from the time I take the camera out of my cycling jersy until I can take a picture is 9 seconds. That is a long, long time.
Secondly, this camera is pretty much the worst I have seen in low light conditions. And I use "low light" loosely since basically anything other than full sunlight is a problem. Anything inside, even with full lighting, will be blurred. The other thing is that inside pictures make very "orange" looking pictures unless the flash is used.
The description of the camera tauts its ability to take "sports" pictures and to "hold" focus on moving objects. I just can't agree with this at all. I tried a whole variety of pictures of moving objects including running children, cyclists and slow moving cars and it just blurs. I wish I could upload some pictures taken with the camera to show what I am talking about.
While I didn't have high expectations of their "continuous" shooting mode, it is basically worthless at a picture every 4-5 seconds even with a class 10 memory card. Looks like I am going to have to investigate more expensive options.
The movie capture ability was actually pretty decent although I do see a lot of artifacts in the encoding when I play it back. But the capture is very smooth.

(More customer reviews)The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS10, when compared to other waterproof point & shoot cameras, is an excellent choice! I've used a number of Olympus "Tough" cameras (6000, 8000, etc.) and the Panasonic competes more than admirably.
Shutter lag seems to be a nagging issue with most waterproof, point & shoot cameras. I find the DMC-TS10 has very little shutter lag--signficantly less than any waterproof, point & shoot Olympus I've used. I can't tell you how irritating and frustrating it is to push the shutter and have a camera wait 1/2 to 1 second before it responds.
The menu is much more intuitive and less "layered" than the Olympus cameras. One nice feature is the ability to take a picture at any time regardless where you are in the menu system. A simple, light touch of the shutter button brings you immediately into picture taking mode no matter where you are in the menu system.
Picture quality is very good to excellent. It won't compete with a digital SLR, but it is definitely above average in the waterproof, point & shoot category. Battery life is also very good. I was able to shoot almost 45 minutes of 720 HD video before the battery exhausted. Note: you can only shoot approx. 8 min. of continuous video before you must start again. Also, inexpensive aftermarket batteries are available; however, they must be "firmware" compatible with the DMC-TS10, otherwise they will not work. As of this writing I was not able to determine the number of pictures that can be taken on one battery charge.
The DMC-TS10 comes with an attractive silicone case that does an excellent job of protecting the camera both in and out of the water.
One final note: if you read the various Amazon reviews, I think you'll find ALL waterproof, point & shoot cameras have some waterproof integrity issues. All the waterproof, point & shoot cameras I've seen (regardless of price) have a very similar design in terms of access to the memory card, battery, and USB/power/charging connectors. Bottom line, if you try to open the door on any of these cameras when the camera is wet in any way, you risk permananently damaging the camera. From my experience, you have to let the camera sit for a few hours before attempting to open any of the access doors. If you choose to not let the camera "air dry" and just dry the outside of the camera, water will remain underneath the edges of the doors. The moment you open the door water gets pulled into the interior of the camera (via a vacuum affect) no matter how careful you are drying the camera.
If you're looking for a waterproof, point & shoot camera, with good/excellent picture quality, minimal shutter lag/delay, good ease of use, and good battery life, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS10 is DEFINITELY worth considering!

(More customer reviews)I haven't tested the underwater capabilities yet, but otherwise the camera works as advertised. The menu options are clear and easy to understand. I do have a couple of complaints though:
The GPS seems to take a while to get a lock. (You can continue to shoot, but the photos you take until it gets a lock will not be geo-tagged.)
I was disappointed that you cannot charge the battery through the USB connection. This would be a great camera for the outdoor enthusiast, but you can't couple it with a solar battery charger so you have to carry extra batteries.
There is no lens cover so you'll want to watch out when throwing the camera in your pack or pocket.

(More customer reviews)This camera has by far exceeded all of my expectations. My previous camera was a pentax optio w10 (also a waterproof camera) that I was satisfied with for several years. I wasn't sure how much of an improvement this camera would be, but it is definitely a huge upgrade. I know it is not the perfect camera for everyone, but it fits my lifestyle perfectly.
So far I have been able to use this camera to take tons of pictures and videos from my honeymoon to the Dominican Republic. I took it snorkeling, in the pool, hiking through the jungle, and jumping off of waterfalls. The only time that it struggled to take amazing pictures was while we were swimming through the narrow passageways between waterfalls where it was dark and wet. Like most any other camera, it struggled to focus on the subject and took awhile to snap the picture (it also didn't help that I was wading in the water and shivering from the cold water). Besides that, it has taken wonderful pictures that I was pretty satisfied with and only did minor touch ups on the computer.
Pros:
- 4.6x zoom is a big improvement over my previous camera's 3x (wide angle pictures are also nice)
- very quick response time from being off to focusing and taking a picture
- clutz proof (I knocked it on a lot of rocks climbing up the waterfalls and haven't noticed even a single scratch)
- dedicated video button makes it easy to switch between pictures and video
- intelligent auto mode is pretty good most of the time (I leave it on this setting unless I have a few seconds before I need to take the picture in which case I will switch to the mode that best fits the situation)
- burst mode works well for action pictures or even to compensate for the constant blinker (even works with the flash)
Cons:
- size. it is much bigger than I thought it would be, but it feels great now that I have gotten used to it.
- video button sometimes needs to be pressed twice to start recording. i have missed out on a few good memories because sometimes one button press will start videoing and sometimes it needs two (the first will just switch it to the video mode)...
- LED light drains the battery, especially while videoing
- like any other compact camera, the audio on videos is always muffled. also the microphone is where I normally hold the camera, so I have caught myself muffling the audio even worse many times
- GPS feature is cool, but I won't really be using it as it is just more of a battery waster
- because it is waterproof, you don't worry that it gets wet, but you also don't really notice that the drops of water on the lens are there and mess up your pictures
I am very satisfied with this camera and would definitely buy it again.
