Polk Audio TSi500 Floorstanding Speaker (Single, Black) Review

Polk Audio TSi500 Floorstanding Speaker (Single, Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Exterior Finish - Got the speakers and unpacked them to an amazing sight of cherry finish with the high gloss back top. My wife absolutely loved it. They are one of the bigger towers and will dwarf even a 40inch TV.
Sound - Listened to a lot of speakers..Paradigm studios, klipsch Icons, reference series, Polk Rtis, PSB image towers and Infinity towers....to me the paradigm studios were the best in sound but they were astronomical in terms of price. Finally it was between these and the PSBs, the klipsh Icons and the polks RTis sounded bright to me. Did a lot of listening with my own cd at Frys, my friends place, bestbuy and a whole list of places. The psbs seemed to have the best mid range but lacked the clarity at the highs these provided. The klipsch Icons were ruled out as even the TSI400s sounded better than those. Since i was looking for beefier mids I went with these and have not looked back since. Running them using an Emotiva amp. I have pushed them to a true 100 watts and they were wanting more. I could not go past this point as I dint want cops at my door...:) needless to say these performed like champs.
For HT these are beasts...provides an in theater experience once the lights go out. Pair them with a CS20 and you will have an extreme front sound stage.
Value - Must buy for the sheer value provided at this price range. An absolute yes to an audiophile who knows the law of diminshing returns or a practical person who wants most from his purchase.

Onkyo A-5VL A-5VL Integrated Stereo Amplifier Review

Onkyo A-5VL A-5VL Integrated Stereo Amplifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this amplifier because I wanted something better than even a high-end iPod dock (such as the Bowers & Wilkins Zepplin.) I wanted to use my iPod (actually iPhone 3GS) as the source for a small and mid-priced, but high-end audio system and I didn't want to sacrifice music quality or convenience. I also wanted something smaller than a full receiver that wouldn't stick out in my den/library that could accept a digital audio signal, which is almost impossible to find in a mini system, but this has it.
So here's what I did: I purchased the Wadia 170i Transport ($399) which is the only product on the market which can bypass the iPod/iPhone's internal digital audio converter and output a true digital audio output via a digital coaxial cable (it officially only support iPods, but my iPhone works fine). I plugged this digital coax cable output (included with the Wadia) into the Onkyo A-5VL ($599) and added a high quality pair of bookshelf speakers (Boston Acoustics for $600 a pair). So, it is a total of $1,600 for the whole system, but it is more flexible and MUCH, MUCH higher quality and better sounding than a B&W Zepplin or mini system and even cooler in its low profile, audiophile system approach.
When I play a recording from my iPhone (Apple lossless format is best) on this system, the sound is AMAZING and rivals even much higher priced and much larger systems. The sound is effortless and pure (especially with direct bypass of tone controls) and can be played very loudly without losing quality or becoming harsh. I listened to some songs I had listened to many, many times, on my existing mini system (and high end car system) and I heard many instruments in the background that I never noticed before, which is another true testament to high quality amplification. It is more expensive than mass market iPod capable systems, but is actually fairly cheap by audiophile standards and a very good value.
I love the simplicity, lack of flash and very high quality of this product. It's kind of a throwback to old stereo audio days of high quality separate components but easily it handles digital content. It really has only two functions: i) convert from digital to audio and ii) amplify the signal to drive speakers, but these are the only two functions I needed for my high end system it does these two things EXTREMELY well. It has a very high quality Burr-Brown DAC and a higher quality amplifier than found in the already very good Onkyo receivers. This amplifier is solid and weighs a lot for its small size due to its high quality components and thick copper plate. I feel like I spent my money on higher quality rather than features like surround sound, a tuner, etc that I did not need.

Panasonic SC-PM19S 5-CD Shelf System (Silver) Review

Panasonic SC-PM19S 5-CD Shelf System (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received this as a Christmas gift and I have been very happy with it thus far. The sound is very good and will get louder than I would ever want to play it; all without any distortion. The controls are straight forward and easy to use as is the remote. The radio has great reception on both AM & FM.
It appears to be very well constructed which is what I have come to expect from Panasonic. They always do a good job at providing a quality product. I have electric razors, juicers, air purifiers and other items made by them and I am always happy with my purchases. I especially like the fact that it has soft footpads on the bottom of the main unit and speakers. This allows me to place it directly on my dresser without having to worry about it scuffing the finish.
Some have commented on the CD changer being noisy and I agree with this. It does seem to be a minor tradeoff but I do not know how they could make it more quiet and keep the price where it is. I was also suprised that there are no controls to adjust the bass & treble. Panasonic gets around this by providing several pre-selected sound modes. I find that they did a pretty good job at this and the auto-enhanced setting sounds just the way I would like it to.
Pros:
Fantastic sound
Speakers that can handle all of the power
Easy to use controls
Soft footpads
Easy to use remote
Good radio reception
Quality construction
Attractive
Cons:
Loud CD changer
Slow CD changer
No separate bass, treble adjustments
Overall - I think anyone would be happy with this unit.

Audio-Technica AT4033CL Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone Review

Audio-Technica AT4033CL Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an amazing vocal mic. I have recorded with two other sub $600 mics, and I love the vocals I did with this one. The upfront characteristic really makes mixing easier, and everything is smooth and clear as a bell. The only drawback with the AT4033 I used was that I had to return it to it's owner. :(
I didn't make notes as to which vocal tracks I used this mic on, but I can tell immediately. The AT4033 vocals stand out in the mix so much better than my other tracks. I really regret not using it for my entire project.
If you're starting out with recording and not sure what to get, this is a great place to start.

Onkyo HT-RC360 7.2-Channel Network Audio/Video Receiver (Black) Review

Onkyo HT-RC360 7.2-Channel Network Audio/Video Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This receiver rocks! I bought a Dennon AVR-891 with a list of $799 and it sounded scratch like phase distorted. I have a tuned ear, played trumpet for many years and have been involved with high end car audio for over 25 years. I went to Best Buy and went into their magnolia room and there was a pair of B&W 61/2" book shelf speakers for $799 playing Simon and Garfunkle. It sounded scratchy just like the Denon receiver I just returned to Fry's. I asked which receiver was on and he pointed to the Dennon, I knew it, I asked him to put on the Pioneer Elite VSX-32 on and it sounded great. I started researching the Pioneer receivers and I came across the Onkyo TX-NR609 it is THX certified and has Qdeo video processor and started looking at that. The Specs looked clean at 100 watts .08% THD @ 20-20K hz.
Well the Fridays Fry's electronics ad showed up and it was their anniversary sale, there was an Onkyo receiver for $299. It was the HT-RC360. I looked at the specs and couldn't find any difference between this receiver and the TX-NR609 other than the THX certification. The unit has the same de-mentions, same specs so I picked it up. WOW is what I should say, I'm running Polk Rti-A3's for fronts mounted to the wall all in THX setup recommendations, Polk Monitor 30's for rear and Velodyne 10, Polk RMC center channel. room size is 10X13 with a 46" Samsung LN46c630 LCD.
This receiver is clean and capable of pushing some serious current to your speakers. Not only with movies but Madonna Blu-rays, Elton John Big red piano, you can really hear details that I couldn't with the Dennon or my old Sony ES. The piano's, horn's, vocal's are strong and clean at extremely high volumes. I am no longer considering the Pioneer Elite. Let me ad the functions are basic, not confusing with simple treble and bass adjustment. There is no multi-band eq, however I don't see that as a negative because I try not to introduce EQ's into my setups. This unit doesn't need an EQ with a balance of matching speakers. However if you are the type that likes to use Auddessy then you will be pleased. You will get your EQ there.
I recommend this receiver to even the audiophiles out there. It will surprise you.

Onkyo TX-SR507 5.1-Channel A/V Surround Home Theater Receiver (Black) Review

Onkyo TX-SR507 5.1-Channel A/V Surround Home Theater Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did a lot of research (including Consumer Reports) and settled on this Onkyo as the best compromise between performance and price. I've had it 2 weeks now and am very happy.
The auto setup function works better than a much-more expensive Denon unit I set up for a friend. I used the microphone (included) to measure speaker levels at 3 different locations in the room and the Onkyo did everything else. (It's connected to some older Polk speakers-- they sound so much better through this amp!)
I bought this primarily to process audio from our new BluRay player and the Onkyo does an outstanding job. The sound is better than in most movie theaters! Especially BluRay DTS or HD Master. Wish more movies were recorded in these formats.
We also have our DirecTV HD DVR hooked up to the Onkyo. Audio and video travel through the HDMI Cables, so there's no need to hook up audio separately. Very nice and a feature you will find missing from some more expensive amps.
The amp does get very warm. I put a small fan in the back of the cabinet and that seems to help.
BTW although this is a 5.1 channel amp is DOES support 7.1 if you want the 2 extra rear speakers... you just have to hook it up to your old amp (or any cheap 2-channel amp) and process those 2 channels that way. The 7.1 decoding IS built into this box.
I am not using the "Zone 2" feature but it's very unusual to have that in a receiver in this price range. You can watch a movie in one room while someone else listens to an iPod or FM in another room.
I don't think you can find a better receiver in this price range (and keep an eye on the price-- it's falling!)

Excellent high-definition screen image used with DirectTV receiver and disk/VCR component. Internet apps easy to use (e.g., Netflix). Presents clear picture when viewed off-center. Only minor distraction is the slight re-imaging delay when changing channels. Purchased from [...] through Amazon. Definitely worth the discounted price (approx $1600). Delivery by Pilot Air and local land transit took just over 10 days from date of purchase. When reviewing, note the Sharp model nr as there appear to be several models; however, this model appears to be their latest made in March 2011.

Best Kept Secret
okay, did a ton a research and I am about to finally put all this 3D mess to rest for those who are looking for the best bang for your buck with awesome quality in projector bluray movies and Bluray 3D. First, you do need the IR emmiter and Vision setup to make it work, and you dont need a projector listed on the Nvidea website for their requirements to make 3D work either for a projector, but it does require manipulation to get 3D to happen.
I was going for the HD66 and GT720 but was put off by the lack of features and lumens. I needed an all round projector to work in all light situations for my business as a Videographer. I bought the GT700 and was disappointed by the need for absolute darkness to make the image pop, not ideal in ambient light conditions for portable settings. A dedicated dark theatre room, maby, HD66 not portable enough and lumens to low for various light situations. HD20 not 3D although good im sure but low lumens, like 1700, not good. Let me tell you, 1080p is just not worth the extra money right now. 720p works just fine. Okay, contrast is important and lumens is crucial when displaying 3D due to darkening of image, so needed a projector bright enough and portable enough and ideal for all type light sitautions.
Took a chance on the optoma TW610ST 3D ready DLP Projector and let me tell you, awesome. Google and check out specks. 3100 lumens, 3000 contrast, and best part, you can adapt easily to any sitaution. Now since model not listed on Nvidea Site as requirement for 3D, that sucks, but there is a wrk around. Download the Acer H5360 INF file and install as a display driver. Nvision setup works like a charm. Will pass Nvision setup to make 3D work on Nvidea Card and HPC setup with IR Emmitter, which is needed. Might have to restart computer a few times to take effect. Run with DVI - HDMI cable from PC to Projector and voila, set resolution to 1280X720 120hz and you got gorgeous 3D. Must have bluray drive to play Bluray 3D.
I tried both Cyberlink 10 Software and Arcsoft TMT and TMT rocks man. Plays Blurays quietly and smooth where as Cyberlink constantly skipped. I am using both the Nvision Glasses that came with the Nvision + Emmitter kit and Optoma DLP Link ZD101 glasses and they both work fine side by side. I prefer the image from DLP Link glasses over Nvision glasses, but Nvision more comfortable in long hours. The beauty of the TW610ST is that because of the High 3100 Lumens, you can crank up the brightness and contrast to offset the darkness of 3D, which is why I love this projector. 720p resolution is breathtaking and trust me, wont tell the difference from 1080p unless you are picky about it.
I am projecting on a Duet Epson 80" portable screen and love it. Love the portability of this screen for my business. Does regular Bluray and 3D just awesome. Now I forgot to mention that i read somewhere in order to Spoof Acer H5360 INF you need to use the CD 2.9 Nvision setup Software and not the most current CD 3.2 Divers in order for the Nvision 3D setup to read your Optoma DLP projector, Not sure why but it worked great. I guess if your Projector is 3D ready you can use this setup Spoof to let Nvision think it is an Acer H5360. This is a joke to me and cant understand why they cant remedy this. But hey it works and I hope all this info will help someone sort through all the mess found from people trying to figure this all out. I had to learn the hard way by taking a chance and trial and error and lots of reading forums.

Pioneer AVH-P4200DVD In-Dash Double-DIN DVD Multimedia AV Receiver Review

Pioneer AVH-P4200DVD In-Dash Double-DIN DVD Multimedia AV Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
OK here is my review of the Pioneer AVH-P4200DVD. I bought it a few weeks ago and had it professionally installed in my 2009 Yukon XL. I wanted to give it some use before I wrote a review so I could give it an honest review. I know many people including myself use these reviews to make the deciding decision if they are undecided between a few different choices. I am not going to go into much detail around the interface options because the internet has plenty of info and videos already on that. I am going to tell more about how each of the modules work. So here we go.
Obviously I got the head unit, but I also got The Bluetooth module (CD-BTB200), the HD Radio Module (GEX-P20HD), The Sirius Satellite Radio module (CD-SB10 & SC-C1), Backup Camera (ND-BC4) and the IPod Touch/IPhone cable (CD-IU200V). Basically I got every possible add-on module, minus the navigation (AVIC-U220) which is not even out yet. I will go into each of the modules and explain.
Bluetooth:
Connecting your phone to the unit is pretty painless. Turn discovery mode on the phone and the unit immediately picks it up. Once the phone has been set up the first time, it is a breeze. The only thing that is needed, is the Bluetooth needs to be turned on, on the phone. The head unit automatically picks it up when it is close. It connects very fast, usually within a second or two. The factory Bluetooth would take around 30 seconds. The module comes with a microphone that I had mounted by my rear view mirror. The sound from the call comes out the cars speakers. Voice quality sounds great on both ends I have been told. Better than the one that came with the vehicle. The Bluetooth interaction between the unit and your phone is nothing special. You can press a button on the unit to register you phone so you can see missed call(s), incoming, outgoing and that's about it. The caveat to that is that the phone has to be paired to the unit when the call actually came, or it shows nothing. So in my mind, it is kind of pointless for almost $200. If you have a stock one with your vehicle (both units still work the stock and the Pioneer one, I can pick which to pair with), keep it, if you don't then buy it because driving while holding a phone sucks. Second part of this module is it does do streaming audio via Bluetooth. I have a Motorola Droid, so when it is paired I switch it to Bluetooth audio, open up my Pandora app and let it rip. Sound is good, but this is fully dependent of your phone signal.
HD Radio:
If you listen to radio this is a must. The sound quality is so crisp and so clear, even the AM stations. I have heard some misconceptions about HD radios not being able to broadcast a station that has not converted to HD. False and untrue. The stations that don't have an HD channel sounds like it does in your vehicle today. You can really hear the difference between the HD and regular. When you select a channel it comes out standard as it does today, then after a second or two, you see on the screen the signal changes to HD and the sound is night and day on the same station.
Sirius Satellite:
I have had a Sirius subscription for 4-5 years now and could not think of life without it. If you don't have satellite radio, I recommend you go the XM route. Yes they are two in the same now that they merged when it comes to what you get in regards to programming but not when it comes to your wallet. If you go the XM route, you only have to buy one module, the GEX-P920XM. If you go the Sirius route you have to buy the Pioneer module (CD-SB10) and the Sirius Connect module (SC-C1). I went the Sirius route because I signed a long contract years ago so I had to stick with them. The unit, when connected to Sirius, shows station, artist & etc. This is the thing on the radio that gets listened to the most. I feel it is a must have if you buy this radio.
Backup Camera:
Well......it's a backup camera. Nothing special here in terms of what it does. The picture is great on the units screen in any light conditions. Pioneer sells another backup camera (ND-BC20PA) that is almost double the price that is supposed to have better resolution, better at night, parking assist and yada, yada, yada . I am backing up out of my driveway or into a spot. I don't need assistance with that and if I did, I should probably not be driving backwards. I can't compare the two because I never used the other one, but I can pick out a leaf on the ground at night behind my vehicle, in great detail, so I can't imagine needing any more detail than that. I am glad I got this with such a big vehicle because it is good to see behind you at a lower level. If I had a car I would not have gotten this because I don't see the point.
IPod Touch/IPhone cable:
I did some homework before I got this one by downloading the head unit's manual off the Pioneer web site. Pioneers web site says the one to buy with this unit is the CD-IU50V but the manual says the CD-IU200V. I went with the CD-IU200V and it works just fine. I did mine a little different. I have an extension on the unit then plugged the cable (CD-IU200V) into that, then wired it to the inside of my center console. The reason I did that is for USB thumb drives. This way I can unplug the CD-IU200V USB part and plug in a thumb drive. I tried with a 16 gig thumb drive with mp3's, pictures and videos on it and they all played as expected. Using this cable with an IPod/IPhone is great. I have an IPod Touch and I plug it in and put it in my center console. Everything is controlled from the head unit. The touch on the unit is very responsive. The only point of this cable is to play videos. If you have zero intentions in playing videos, don't buy this. Just use the one that comes with the unit. That will play all of your music without the need to buy anything else. The video playback is great. It depends on the quality of the video save on your IPod of course. A few goofy things about this cable, or maybe it has to do with the software? Sometimes when I connect my IPod it charges it.....sometimes it doesn't. Occasionally it shows the message saying that this part is not compatible with the unit. Once in a while the menus lag from screen to screen when the IPod is attached and I am trying to go into playlists or search artists, and sometimes it is so quick and snappy.
SD Card:
The manual says it only supports SD cards that are maximum of 2 gb in size. I tried a 16 gb SDHC card at it worked flawlessly. Same with the thumb drive, that was 16 gb also. So this is another option if you don't have an IPod or want to keep DVD's in the car. It's just another way to keep additional media handy.

DVD:
It acts pretty much like todays DVD players at home allowing one to adjust angle, language and subtitles (if available on the DVD). The picture is amazingly clear. Sound coming out the speakers sound great. I put the Nine Inch Nails Beside You In Time DVD in and I felt like I was at the concert again. It is a great part of this unit.
CD:
No idea. The manual says it plays them but I can't remember the last time I actually went out and bought one.A few things that someone would need to know before buying. If you want to keep your steering wheel controls, you need to buy a module for that. If you have OnStar or want to keep the car chimes (blinker, door open etc.), you need to buy an additional module for that but it is not as cut and dry as that. If you have a Bose system, you need a different type of module. While this unit does provide dual zone functionality (i.e. video screens in the backseat), you will need to buy an add-on module for that too.
The sound is just what you would expect to come from Pioneer.....great. A few things I have run into that cause a little concern. About a week after I had the unit installed, it started rebooting constantly. I mean it rebooted for two days straight. I was unable to listen to the radio, watch a video, play my IPod, or use the Bluetooth for two days. I did a factory reset and that did nothing. It did that for two days then just stopped. I called the place that installed it and told them what was going on. They said to bring it in so they could take a look at it. Took it out, rewired everything, looked at the unit, said it did not seem like anything was loose or broken. The installed does not believe it is the actual head unit that is the problem. He thinks it is because so many modules are in play, that one might be causing the problem or the combination of all of them is the problem. About 3 weeks after it started up again and stopped. I am going to have to chalk this up as this thing needs a software upgrade if/when that becomes available to get out the bugs. No reason this should be happening within the first two weeks of owning it. While his diagnoses was clearly just an assumption after years of installations, I ask if this is the case why make something that needs all these modules if they don't play nice with each other? One other thing I would love to see in a software refresh would be station labeling on your presets. Now it just says Preset 1,2 ,3 etc. It does this for Sirius & the HD radio. When I search my presets, I have no idea when it shows them in a list which is which so I just end up cycling them which defeats the purpose.
Conclusion:
This unit is great for both sound and video. One of the best I have seen and heard. The low price tag of around $500 probably has gotten most people's attention. The great thing about this unit is, if you want to pick and choose this module or that module, you can verses getting everything and not using half of it. The reality is if you want it all, you are going to pay...Read more›

If you live in an area where reception is weak, you'll hear a big improvement in signal strength. And when you're near tall buildings, Supertuner IIID reduces the effect of multi-path noise, which occurs when the signal is reflecting off of the buildings.
Always have your favorite stations at hand with 18 FM and 6 AM user presets. And when you're somewhere new, let the tuner do the work for you by activating the Best Stations Memory (BSM) function. The tuner will seek out the 6 strongest stations in the area and set them into the tuner presets.

And that doesn't just mean a boost in volume: it means that your music will be cleaner at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. Clean, efficient power that will rock your vehicle.
For those who'd like a bit more power, three 4V RCA preamp outputs are also included for system expansion (front/rear/sub).
Available Bluetooth Wireless Technology Use the available CD-BTB200 Bluetooth Adapter and Bluetooth-enabled cellular phones for easy, safe, and hands-free operation, including talking via the headunit's microphone and your vehicle's speaker system. Sennheiser e835 Dynamic Vocal Microphone (3 Pack) Review

Sennheiser e835 Dynamic Vocal Microphone (3 Pack)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hi there, I'm currently using a single Sennheiser e835 Dynamic microphone. It delivers professional quality sound. Now when you hear that, your thinking... it means whatever your mind wants it to mean. Basically when i say its got professional quality, i mean.. it'll suite you... for whatever you have to record. It does an amazing job for my podcasting studio delivering great variance between highs and lows. As long as your between 1-4 inches from the mic you will get amazing quality sound, everything outside that will be ignored. I often times have my tv going, my music playing or i'm having a conversation at the same time as having a podcast, and all i have to do is move the mic away from my mouth. The 10 year warrenty is very good, and the construction of this microphone screams nothing but quality. The Shure Sm57 and 58 havn't been changed since.. *cough* 1957 and 1958. In these last 40-50 years we've come up with a lot of better tech to go into a mic, this microphone hosts some of that. The cage on top is also much more durable than the Shure models. I believe i'll be happy to have this microphone for 10+ years.

Jensen VM9214 Single DIN MultiMedia Receiver with 7-Inch Flip out Touch Screen Review

Love Jensen, I had the older model so it was time to upgrade. I love the two usb slots one in front and one in back. I just pop in my 16gb flash drive and I'm ready to go with music and movies on one drive. Don't even really need to use cd's or dvd's anymore. Only downside is that I can't rewind or fast forward tracks or video files. Over all great product for a great price. I also push 4 twelve inch sub-woofers in my trunk and the Jensen gives me no problems or skipping whatsoever.

Kenwood DNX7120 - Navigation system with DVD player, LCD monitor, digital player and radio Review

Kenwood DNX7120 - Navigation system with DVD player, LCD monitor, digital player and radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
OK, my wife got a new car with the Honda Nav system, which has consolidated the tuner, CD changer, XM radio, bluetooth, and GPS with a nice size screen (about 7") and I immediately fell in love with it. Only, it's her car. So when I traded in my car for a new one, I started thinking about getting my own setup.
Enter the Kenwood DNX7120. It does not have all the features I wanted, specifically it was lacking satellite radio and bluetooth, but they are available as optional add-on components. With the add-ons, everything appears and functions as one consolidated unit. Great! The price is decent enough, the unit that is closer to being fully consolidated is priced at slightly over $1500 at this time, while this unit is just slightly over $900. The add-on componenents are roughly $200 extra, so the cost savings seemed to justify going this route.
Quality: from my perspective, great. The unit takes maybe 30 seconds to boot into a usable screen, but while it is booting up it automatically starts playing whatever you left it at. So if you were last listing to FM radio, about 5 - 10 seconds after you start you will at least have music. Sound is great, although my car is not an audiophile's high-end, but I enjoy it. The unit has a large number of potential interfaces, to include USB, I-pod, and A/V RCA connectors. Video display is nice and sharp. Favorites seems to be limited to 6 of each area (FM, XM), but that limitation might be because I haven't fully read the manuals yet. (I'd like to have more than 6 XM favorites).
This unit comes with a remote. The remote has a lot of buttons making it more complex than I care for, so I can't see myself using it while I drive. But maybe your passenger will want to use it.
Drawback: lack of data interfaces. The built-in Garmin would have a good source of updates if it had an SD card reader, but it doesn't. The manual says that updates are either through the SD or the DVD player, so I guess I'm stuck with ordering a DVD when it's time to update. I'll try the USB, but I had read another review that said the USB won't update the Garmin's database.
GPS: It's Garmin (love it or not). I love my portable Garmin Nuvi, and this acts very similar to it, so I feel comfortable with the nav programming. One bad thing (maybe should have put under drawbacks), if I'm running the GPS for a route and the phone rings and I take it, the GPS will not be displayed at all during the phone call. So either you're on a stretch of road that you won't miss a turn, or you'd better make the call short.
Last thoughts: This particular model is now, I believe, out of production and superceded by the DNX 81xx series. So obviously prices will be going down. If you can get this unit at $700 or under, it will be an exceptional bargain. It's still a good deal at current prices. Get all your optional components at one time and install everything together. You probably won't want to take it apart later just to add an add-on component.
UPDATE: After using this for a few days, reading the manual, and playing around with it, I have found that you can talk via bluetooth and still watch the GPS map. The unit will not automatically revert back to your screen, but all you have to do is press the NAV button and you will get the map back. So at this point, I wish I had given it 5 stars, but it seems that you cannot edit your initial star rating.

Yamaha RX-V463BL 525 Watt 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver Review

Yamaha RX-V463BL 525 Watt 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this reciever based on a review I read from audioholics and I figured why not just post it for everyone to read. I couldn't agree more with their review. It is a solid receiver for the $299 amazon price.
2008 has started off with some amazing prices and features being offered on budget A/V receivers. Just as the new high-end receivers gain new features and new technologies, so do the receivers on the low end of the price spectrum. This is the first time that basic HDMI functionality has been offered on receivers for under $350. This is a winning situation for everyone. Most would think that $350 would not get you anything of quality and in the past that would be correct; Not so anymore. The RX-V463 is a feature laden piece of gear that far from your budget receiver of the past. With impressive audio processing power the Yamaha RX-V463 dives into territory once occupied by receivers costing twice as much or more. Those features include things such as 192kHz/24-bit DACs for all channels, 6-channel external decoder input, iPod and Bluetooth compatibility (via optional Yamaha YDS-10 YBA-10 docking modules) and YPAO for automatically optimizing the sound in your room. And if thats not enough for you then how about 3 HDTV compatible component video inputs, 8 DSP programs, a compressed music (MP3) enhancer, and the ability to view iPod song titles displayed on the front panel and OSD, Dolby Digital and DTS processing, and XM- and XM HD-ready. That is one heck of a feature set for a sub-$350 receiver.
With a rated power of 100 watts x 5 the RX-V463 is no pansy when it comes to power either. Yamaha has offered more bang for your buck than most for a while now, and this budget receiver continues in this tradition. And with Yamaha's power ratings being very conservative, it is not unreasonable to think this little receiver will beat its rated specs. In short, there is more than enough power being offered here.
In addition to dual HDMI switching inputs, there are three component inputs, three S-video inputs, and three composite video inputs - each with one output as well. For audio, five analog stereo inputs, 6.1 analog inputs, two TOSlink inputs and one coaxial digital input round out the receiver. The RX-V463 also has real binding posts instead of those cheap spring clip terminals that so often plague other budget units.Like all of the newest Yamaha receivers, setup is could not be any easier with the addition of the on-screen Setup menu. This is a noteworthy feature in itself on a budget receiver. While it is not as advanced as the system found on more expensive Yamaha receivers, it is accurate and easy. Also offered is a new feature called SCENE buttons. SCENE buttons are like macros that are preprogrammed to launch a variety of commands. Build quality is very good and the unit weighs a solid 17.6 lbs. This is a great budget receiver.

Denon AVR-1912 7.1 Channel Network Streaming A/V Home Theater Receiver Review

Denon AVR-1912 7.1 Channel Network Streaming A/V Home Theater Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After returning 2 failed (video problems) Onkyo TX NR609 receivers, I gave this Denon a try and am happy I did. It has gorgeous sound and was easy to set up and calibrate and has a wide array of features, including Apple Airplay.
Pros:
1) Beautiful sound! Dolby ProLogic IIz; 7 discrete amps!
2) 6 HDMI ports
3) 2 year warranty
3) Ease of setup; Audyssey automatic calibration of speakers with included microphone
4) "Airplay" for use with Apple products--this is very cool.
5) No need to buy expensive Wifi adapater. This will use any wireless bridge to allow you to connect to internet (I bought one for $50).
6) Pandora, Rhapsody, and Napster!
7) Attractive looking with rounded corners and matte black finish
8) On-screen menus and volume control (Pioneer does not have this feature)
9) USB port on front of receiver for Iphone or Ipod connection (using the Apple USB cord)Cons:
1) Difficult to use remote control (note: You have to press the AMP button on the remote first THEN Menu button before you can access the Setup Wizard). Confusing instructions on setting up remote to work with other devices. I still cannot get the "Quick Select" buttons to work, and will have to contact technical support for advice. Will update this post with instructions when/if I obtain them.
2) No manual! Instead they give you a CD with PDF of the manual. I found this annoying since my PC is in a different room than the receiver and going back and forth to follow step-by-steps was frustrating. You can print pages out of course, but a hard copy of the manual would have been my preference. On the up side...no bulky manual to file away, and I have the CD smartly stored away and a saved PDF of the manual on my computer for future reference.
3) Front USB port is not compatible with the IPad. (Airplay does, however, work with Ipad)
The unit does not seem to run hot, and from what I have read, Denon receivers enjoy a long and stable life. Based on what I have experienced so far, I highly recommend this unit over the Onkyo TX NR609 and even the Pioneer VSX-1021-K, which I also tried. I could not tell the difference in sound between the Denon and Pioneer, but the Pioneer does not have on-screen menus or volume, which I found very annoying. Pioneer also wants an outrageous $150 for their Wifi adapter. Both the Pioneer and Denon sound better than the Onkyo.

Audix OM6 Song Writer Dynamic Vocal Microphone Review

Audix OM6 Song Writer Dynamic Vocal Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this mic for well over a year now, and I am thrilled with it.
In a live setting, this mic really helps vocals sit a little higher in the mix. In other words, I have noticed that my vocals come through in a more defined way that allows it to be heard over the music.
As for build quality, the mic is solid, sturdy, with a nice feel. (and while we are on the subject, she's pretty easy on the eyes as well... that counts too, right?)
I also have a modest home studio, and since I do not yet own a condenser mic, have used this mic to record vocals into Logic9 via the Apogee Duet. This thing sounds great in a recording capacity as well- and although I would love to record with a condenser, the Om6 dynamic is probably a better option anyway, since I don't have any kind of soundproofing in the room where I record. (Condensers pick up EVERYTHING... the neighbor's dog, traffic, the clock the wall... everything...)
Anyway, my impression, not being a "golden-eared" sound expert, is that this mic is true to my voice, and sounds natural. It also sounds nice recording my accoustic, and while I have played a little bit with hooking it up to the amp/electric, mostly I have recorded my guitar and vocals.
Finally, unlike other close contenders (the shure58 being one of them), this mic is made in Oregon, as opposed to being built overseas. I have also been told that should the mic get damaged in some way, Audix will replace the "innards" for a reasonable fee...
I am so impressed with this mic, that I will always look to Audix first when mic shopping. (And no, I don't work for Audix;)...I am merely impressed with the OM6, and want more folks to know... Great dynamic mic!
The bottom line is that both in a live and recording capacity, I am so glad to have this mic around.
