I purchased this bookshelf system as a Christmas gift for my wife for $427 (2009) from Amazon.com. I was hoping for something a bit more subdued, but this was what I found. I have set the system up in our built-ins around our fireplace in a great room with fantastic accoustics (high vaulted ceiling, hardwood, etc.). So, the player is in about the best install location possible. It sounds great when it has clean source material. We will use it primarily with an iPod. I've noticed that some iPod music isn't as clean as I'd like and does put a bit of mild hiss to the speakers. Whereas, a good CD recording sounds crystal clear. The bass is strong and the volume capacity is everything I hoped for. I haven't pushed it to it's limit, so I don't know where that is, but we have all the volume we need. I would recommend this purchase to anyone looking for this type of system. My biggest disappointment is that there is no visualization with the LCD when listening to music. So you have this big display with just a small bar of basic info featured as a banner at the top of the display. It doesn't even show a multiplicity of data at the same time. For instance, when you turn up the volume, all you see is volume level... No clock, no song info, no source info, etc. Whatever basic data the display is showing is all you will ever get at one time. I would have loved the option to show a graphic screensaver animation (like a Windows Media Player, etc.) but it will not. I did play a music video we had on our iPod, and it did display well, but we have few songs with videos. We will not be using the display as a mini DVD television set, so it will be grossly neglected... Too bad, since it's the coolest feature. One might think this would be a good DVD movie player for a student or military person living in a dorm room, but most people have DVD drives on their computers these days. What I'm trying to say is, I can't figure out how Sony really wanted this display to be used... It's perplexing to me. Sony? The remote control is full featured and allows you to operate even your iPod, and it has a good distance range. It would have been nice if Sony would have designed the front USB port to also act as an input for mobile devices, such as iPod's, but it's only an output for file conversion/storage to MP3 from disc. One other very minor complaint is that the speaker wires were a bit short and are fixed to the back of the speakers. Ideally, they would have had quick clamps on the back of the speakers too, so you could swap out wire lengths at any time. Since they are fixed to the back fo the speakers, I had to splice in some additional length to position the speakers where I wanted them.
On a side note, you can also adjust the orange lamp around the large volume knob on the front. It can either flash with the music to one side, the other or all-around, or it can be turned off altogether.
