Update on 5/8/2010:
-------------------
It's been a couple of months since I bought this phone. Finally, I've updated the firmware and some software, so I'd like to give a quick update / review on the new changes, because some of the things I mentioned before are no longer accurate.
- Firmware v40.2.005 is great. It's just a slight improvement but good nonetheless. One can update the firmware either through over-the-air (ie. 3G / WIFI) or from a PC. I'd prefer to use Nokia Ovi Suite on a PC to update the firmware because you can backup all your settings / contacts / data. Although updating the firmware is relatively safe, you'd want to do a backup just to be sure.
- Ovi Maps v3.03 is a nice improvement. The interface is about the same. The biggest change is you can download voice guidance that speak street names during navigation. With this update, it really depends on one's usage to think if this phone can replace a dedicated GPS unit. It's getting harder to say now.
- Nokia Email Messaging is Nokia's way of doing Push email. It works pretty well with GMail / Hotmail / Yahoo and I'd assume it works with other email service providers too. It basically syncs all the contents in each email accounts (up to 10). The updated client displays HTML contents which is a significant improvement.
Many new phones (especially Android phones) have come out in the last couple of months. I still think this phone still proposes excellent values with its price and features. Most of all, it's unlocked, and it can be used anywhere in the world, even without a SIM card.
The phone's user interface remains its Achilles' heel, however. As long as the user finds the phone hard to use, it really doesn't matter if the phone has the best price / features / performance in the market. Most users are using this phone to be more than just a phone. It's a smartphone because the phone is smart, not because it expects a smart user to use the phone.
Original Review:
----------------
I'll try to keep it short. I'll give the phone 5 stars without hesitiation. Others have provided very good (or bad reviews) of this phone, and mostly they are right-on. The key about this phone is you need to know why you want this phone, and how this phone suit your needs. Do not have an unreasonable expectation. The strength of this phone is its cost vs. feature proposition. In my opinion, there's simply not a phone out there that provides such a rich feature set while costs < $250.
If you want to buy an iphone (and pay ~$1000 total - $200 for the phone + $720 for 2-year data plan @ $30/month), don't buy this phone. Buy the iphone instead. This phone is not an iphone, not an iphone killer, and not an iphone replacement.
If you want to buy a Garmin GPS, don't buy this phone. Buy a Garmin GPS instead. This is not a GPS replacement.
If you want to buy a good quality digital camera, don't buy this phone. Buy a Canon or Nikon. This is not a digital camera replacement.
If you want to buy a FM radio, don't buy this phone. But who needs a FM radio anyways.
If you want to buy a music player, actually this phone's music feature is really nice.
With the above being said, buy this phone if you want an excellent phone AND want to do all of the above without carry all of the above gadgets at the same time. In particular you want:
- a phone that is unlocked, quad-band (international use), no contract, no $30 data-plan, no $10 GPS navigation plan and costs ~$250
- a phone that has strong signal, excellent call quality, and long battery life
- a phone that can play music/video/games, browse the internet, check email, take pictures/videos, provide GPS turn-by-turn drive and walk navigation (North America only) and maps service (global map is free download), provide VOIP video calls (using the 2nd camera in the front) over WIFI (fring and nimbuzz apps are free download) EVEN WITHOUT a sim card (excellent for travel)
Some tips while using this phone:
- the touch screen is a resisitive touch screen (unlike iphone's capacitive touch screen). Do not use your "finger tip" to control the touch screen. Use your "finger nail" or the included stylus instead. Personally I like "finger nail" much better. Once you get used to this, everything is a breeze. If your "finger nail" is as sharp (or unsharp) as the included stylus, it will not scratch the screen.
- the user interface takes a while to get used to. The iphone user inteface is more superb (and it's not even close, so I'll give credit where credit is due.) However, the Nokia 5800 features are excellent and there are plenty of supported (and unofficially supported) apps to download. No need to download itunes. No need to wait for Apple certified apps. Basically, you can download whatever you want and do whatever you want with this phone (e.g. use it as a USB storage device), and that's why it's not an iphone.
- speaking of iphone interface - there's a PAID (for money) app out there that you can buy and install iphone-like user interface onto your Nokia 5800. Get that app if you really need the iphone user interface. Just google "Nokia 5800 myphone app" and you will find the link and reviews.
- use the GPS without data plan (and do not get charged for data usage) by going to
settings -> phone -> app. settings -> positioning -> positioning methods and check only "Internal GPS".
The GPS without data plan may take up 5 mins (or more) to acquire a lock. The GPS signal is weaker than a dedicated GPS unit, and the voice navigation does not speak street names. That's why it's not a GPS replacement, but a GPS capable phone that you can use while a dedicated GPS unit is not available.
- browse the internet and check email using WIFI. Make sure you don't get charged for extra data usage by going to
settings -> connectivity -> destinations -> Internet (or MMS or WAP) -> "Your service provider" and make sure "use access point" is set to "after confirmation".
It's annoying that you will keep getting asked if you allow internet connection, but you'll get the peace of mind that you'll never accidentally connect to the cellular data network.
- visit Chinese (Traditional or Simplified) / Japanese / Korean websites by downloading "Opera Mobile with Asian Language Support" (not the regular Opera Mobile, not Opera Mini). Just google it and you will find the link.
- take pictures / videos while outdoor and with good lighting. Poor picture / videos quality is expected for any camera phone when taking them indoor with poor lighting. The phone flash does not help. That's why it's not a digital camera replacement, but a phone with camera that can use during social outings (e.g. Facebook Mobile upload).
Some nice to have (but not required) for this phone:
- get a data-plan if your service provider has a cheap alternative compared to the standard $30 smartphone data-plan. Being able to browse the internet and check email anywhere without WIFI is very convenient. Plus, the GPS / maps include additional features like traffic, weather, additional point-of-interests update that require a data-plan. More plus, with data-plan, you can turn on A-GPS (assisted GPS), which allows the GPS to acquire a lock in less than 30 seconds and to maintain a much stronger GPS signal throughout.
And most of all enjoy your phone while you are sitting somewhere nice, like a coffee shop. People, do everyone a favor - DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE (TALK OR TEXT) while driving.
Hope my review helps.

No Hidden Costs The new version of Ovi Maps comes with all the maps and high-end, car grade navigation features you need for free and is yours to keep for the life of the smartphone. No additional licenses needed for extra countries, regions or services like traffic information or city guides. Data charges from network operators may apply.

Voice Guidance and Traffic Information Turn-by-turn, voice guided navigation comes free for both drivers and pedestrians. For drivers this includes lane assistance, traffic information, safety camera, and speed warnings. For pedestrians, this includes shortcuts through parks and pedestrian-only zones for over 100 cities around the world as well as 6,000 3D landmarks in over 200 cities to help you find exactly where you are.

Unique Hybrid Technology Ovi Maps is built on an advanced technology called hybrid vector maps. Vector maps are high quality but less data intensive and allow you to continue to navigate even if you lose your network connection. This means that maps downloaded or updated across a network connection are about half the size of bulky bitmaps used by other mobile map providers. The hybrid technology ensures that, unlike other providers, any downloaded map data is stored on the device for future use.

No Network Connection Required When Navigating Avoid expensive, battery-draining network connections with Nokia's unique hybrid technology. Maps can be pre-loaded on to your Nokia smartphone so you can set Ovi Maps to offline mode, saving battery power, and the navigation system will still work. This is particularly useful for those worried about data connection costs when travelling abroad or when you are travelling through areas with little or no network coverage.

Best Global Coverage You take your mobile with you wherever you go in the world so, as standard, voice guided navigation for both pedestrians and drivers is available for 74 countries in 46 different languages and there are maps for over 180 countries. This gives you the best maps with the largest global coverage for free.

Pioneer AVH-P5200BT In-Dash DVD Multimedia AV Receiver Review

Pioneer AVH-P5200BT In-Dash DVD Multimedia AV Receiver

This is definitely a great player but there were a couple of surprises for me. First is the bluetooth is only made for calls so don't think about trying to stream music through it because it won't work. Second, the order of files on the sd card depends not on the name of the file but when the file was actually transferred. For example, if you have A, C and D and you add B to the SD card later, it will actually show up as A, C, D, and then B. I just got it so these are the only things I have found so far. I was a little disappointed with these quirks but other then that it is a great player.

Get your media on the road with Pioneer's AVH-P5200BT, an in-dash single-DIN DVD Multimedia AV Receiver featuring a motorized seven-inch widescreen display. With versatile music and video playback, modern features like USB Direct Control and DivX support, a built-in MOSFET 50 W x 4 amplifier, and plenty of expansion options, it's the perfect way to turn your vehicle into a mobile entertainment center. And with built-in Bluetooth, you can take and make calls through your vehicle's sound system.

AVH-P5200BT Features
Built-In Bluetooth The AVH-P5200BT features built-in Bluetooth technology, which allows you to take incoming calls through your vehicle's sound system. Connecting your Bluetooth-enabled phone is a snap, and gives you access to all your contacts. Best of all, you can make or take a call without a headset.
Motorized Seven-Inch Touchscreen Display The AVH-P5200BT boasts a seven-inch TFT LCD touchscreen display with 1440 x 240 pixel resolution. Navigating your media and system settings from the touchscreen is a breeze thanks to intuitive touch controls and customizable menus. Tap, Swipe or Drag--exactly the way you expect a touchscreen device to work.
When not in use, the screen tucks away safely in the unit. The viewing angle is also adjustable, from 50 to 110 degrees.
Versatile Multimedia Playback Enjoy your favorite DVDs while parked with the full-featured DVD player, or add a back seat screen for your passengers to watch as you drive. The AVH-P5200BT will play DVDs, DVD-Rs, Video CDs and even DivX files burnt to CD or DVD (or from a USB device). You can also use the rear A/V input to attach external devices like video game systems.
As for music, you can enjoy your favorite CDs, or listen to MP3/WMA/AAC files from either CD/DVD data discs or a USB device.
USB Input / SD Memory Card Slot Connect USB thumb drives or other devices and enjoy playback of your digital audio files or DivX video. Ditto for SD memory cards. This makes it a breeze to quickly grab some media from your computer before a big road trip, and enjoy hours of entertainment on the road.
iPod Direct Control (CD-IU50V required) Connect your iPod directly and experience exceptional sound quality while easily navigating through music, videos and album art on the AVH-P5200BT's screen. Say goodbye to the annoying static of FM transmitters and other iPod half-solutions.
Advanced Sound Retriever Hear the detail, warmth and clarity, the way the artist intended it, from all of your highly compressed MP3, WMA and AAC files stored on USB memory device, iPod and portable digital players. By restoring data (especially higher frequencies) that tend to get lost in the digital compression process, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever technology enhances audio reproduction nearly all the way up to 20 kHz frequencies.
Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner Pioneer's legendary Supertuner IIID combines the best of digital and analog tuner technologies to reduce distortion to bring you exceptional FM and AM performance. If you live in an area where reception is weak, you'll hear a big improvement in signal strength. And when you're near tall buildings, Supertuner IIID reduces the effect of multi-path noise, which occurs when the signal is reflecting off of the buildings.
Always have your favorite stations at hand with 18 FM and 6 AM user presets. And when you're somewhere new, let the tuner do the work for you by activating the Best Stations Memory (BSM) function. The tuner will seek out the 6 strongest stations in the area and set them into the tuner presets.
Dial in Your Sound Use and customize EQ curves, adjust the eight-band parametric equalizer, or change loudness and bass boost settings to get the perfect sound.
AUX-In Connection Use the built-in AUX input for connecting any digital portable player and other external auxiliary devices. For extra-convenient access, the AVH-P5200BT has this A/V input on the front panel.
MOSFET 50W x4 Amplifier for the Power Hungry Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, delivering power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. And that doesn't just mean a boost in volume: it means that your music will be cleaner at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. Clean, efficient power that will rock your vehicle.
For those who'd like a bit more power, three 4V RCA preamp outputs are also included for system expansion (front/rear/sub).
Add the Power of Navigation This receiver is ready to take direction with the optional AVIC-U220 navigation module, a sleek navigation unit that supports AVIC feeds, enabling you to create custom trips, as well as your own points of interest. The plug and play AVIC-U220 puts Pioneer's legendary AVIC navigation at your fingertips.
Rear View Camera Capability Keep an eye on your backside using the optional Rear View Camera (ND-BC2 or ND-BC20PA): while you're in reverse the rear-view camera can be in full screen. An unit equipped with the optional rear-view camera adds a level of safety and assurance you can rely on.In addition to keeping you and your family safe, this feature also makes maneuvering in tight spaces easier.
Ready to Expand The AVH-P5200BT is also compatible with Pioneer's XM and Sirius satellite radio tuners, HD radio tuner, TV tuner, CD/DVD changers and more.

Yamaha RX-V671BL AV Receiver (Black) Review

Yamaha RX-V671BL AV Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hello
We were in the market to replace our old (10+ yrs) but trusty Denon 1801 to move into a modern updated unit with the latest connections and mainly BR sound with DTS-HD and True-HD. Like the Denon I looked for reviews and mainly reader feedback. I picked at least one model from the mjor manufactures...Onkyo, Pioneer, Denon, Harmon Kardon and Yamaha. I came away with two out of the list..Yamaha RX-V667 and Denon AVR-891 (same as 2311CI). Both fit my list of needs and budget. I did look at the newer RX-V671 but being new was out of my price range. But the day I made my choice, which was the Denon 891, it went off sale. The next day a RX-V671 "open box" got listed at almost the same price and I grabbed it.
Yamaha's as long as I can remember alwy have had good sound. They don't get the same reconignition as Denon or the amount of mega reviews of Onko but they've alwys been fairly good. They made great strides since the 'RX-Vx65" series with the "x67" series last year. And the newer line of the RX-Vx71's improve on it.
One thing you can count on from Yamaha is n abundant of sound fields and choices. This 671 carries on that tradition. The sound is clean and clear thanks to the 7 channel discrete amps. Besides HD Audio with Cinima DSP 3D and it's 17 programs Yamaha offers a unique "7.1 w/Presence Speaker" setup which I'm using. It's basically a 5.1 with two added speakers preferably on the outside of the main fronts. It addsa more deminson of sound to the listener. The Presence Speakers are set at about 35% instead of 100% to fill in in. I'm sold on it and can tell the difference.
While Denon and Onkyo uses the highly touted 'Audyssey' for sound fine tuning Yamaha has it's own YPAO. It's a real gem and takes out the guess work of trying to get the best sound out there. I did both auto and mnual and whatever the YPAO does it does right. In the sound menu it'll show your configuration, distance, dB levels and so on but it doesn't stop there. You can fine tune the speakers even more. The only cavet in the YPAO was it constantly labled my fronts as small when they are large. But you can change an override the settings and also save custom settings.
The look and design of front and back is well thought of. I like the split gloss & satin metal look on the front and as always a good size volume knob. lso the readout on the front is very good. I can read anything from 10ft away easy. You have a set of inputs on the front and the inclussion of a USB port (the RX-V667 doesn't have) for Ipod or USB stick. The back has plenty of inputs but for thos looking for a set of pre-outs or 6 channel analog look at last years 667 or even the highly touted 867 model which is loaded. Still plenty for the average user. Just make sure you use "Banana Plugs" for speakers as it's tight for bare wire connections.
One thing I read which was a big plus on the Yamaha was it's GUI interface and navigation. When you turn it on it blends in with the current picture and not on it's on so you don't miss a step. It's also easy to get around and make changes to say sound fields with the current input. Very useful for radio, Ipod, MP3's and network music. This was a big part in choosing Yamaha. And speking of Network this usint has it which was another reason. Within five minutes o hooking it up it found a new firmware update and DL it. I had no issues with playing my MP3's thru WMP connected thru AT&T Uverse to a Netgear switch to the 671. And with the "Compressed Music Enhancer" and the 7.1 Presence Speaker setup the sound was the best I've heard in a long time. I'm still playing with all the various sound fields.
The 671 does has HDMI pass thru and so far no issues except ith the Xbox 360 due to it having component connection. While it does pss thru the signal and sound you have to leave the AVR on to do so. ith AT&T and the BR Player (both HDMI out) you don't. Just hit the correct input, light blinks on the front and presto your signal on the TV. I ended up getting a "component-to-HDMI" box which does th trick. I have it,a BR Player and AT&T Uverse all going thru the 671 with one HDMI out to TV. So far I haven't seen or heard any degradation. It's now streamlined my connection to the TV to one cable and now the TV is hung on the wall. And if anything it's improved the sound especially to BR discs ten fold over the old Denon which provided standard DTS and DD 5.1.It's a good unit for the middle-of-the-pack choices. I'd suggest for those looking check over at the AVS Forum [ ... ] for additional input and user reviews on this and other models.

Epson MovieMate 72 High-Definition Projector, DVD and music player combo (V11H257220)
Average Reviews:

I was nervous about spending a thousand dollars on an item I didn't know much about, but now that I've had this projector for a month I consider it worth every penny.
The picture is great, and the projector offers every control and setting in an intuitive fashion. The only thing I don't understand is why it has the swivel base, that seems like a useless feature, but hey, one extra feature is better than one too few.
I've used the projector with game systems, my computer, and of course just in DVD mode. All were set up in less than a minute (the DVD in seconds). I think even grandma and grandpa could get this thing working without the instruction book.
I use it to play movies on my wall at home and the video and audio quality is great, and it's amazing to have a big screen right there in the living room or bedroom just by having moved some pictures around.
The only think I caution you on is to make sure you get the "US" version, there is an international version floating around that apparently has a 90 hour "demo" bulb rather than the standard 3000 hour bulb. Also the warranty is 90 days rather than a year.

Yamaha NSIW280CWH3P Set of 6 Easy-to-install In-Ceiling 3-Wa Review

What a great deal! Three pair of in-ceiling speakers for the price of one high-end in-wall speaker!
Lest you think these Yamaha speakers must sound like a bad office speaker playing elevator music at that price, let me remind you of its decent stats:
* 3-way speakers, 6.5" round woofer, 2 tweeters (one mid-high, one high)
* two built-in crossovers at 6kHz and 9kHz
* 12° pre-tilted woofer, swivel tweeters
* crisp highs up to 28kHz (key for home theater)
* template was perfect for hole-cutting
* swivel screw clamps hold firm to the drywall
* clean finished look
* handles 80W amp comfortably
When I hooked up just one sitting on the floor, I was worried that I made a mistake, but after I got them secure in the ceiling and all working together, the room filled with sound, thanks to my Onkyo 7.1 home theater 80W amp. I am using five for the standard speaker locations: front L/C/R, surround L/R. I have one speaker left over, so I might hook it up as a mono rear surround.
I chose these speakers over the similarly priced Polk Audio speakers because the Polks can't go higher than 20kHz unless you pay $200+ per speaker. If you want to hear glass shatter or steam hissing properly, you need more headroom than 20kHz. These Yamahas go to 28kHz.
You might be wondering about the bottom end of the audio spectrum, below 100Hz. These woofers fall off at 65Hz, and if this were just a small office music system maybe that would be fine, but not good enough for my family room. I filled out the bottom end with two Polk Audio PSW10 subs at half-volume that cover up to 150Hz. My total investment in speakers sounds amazing for under $500. The Onkyo Audyssey auto-EQ and auto-level makes this setup sing. (BTW, never judge a speaker set-up until it's been properly EQ'd and balanced).
This setup is not good enough for a true high-end home theater, where you will need to spend $2500 on speakers, but for my family room...? Yeah, baby. Movies sounds awesome in Dolby Digital and music sounds great in "All Stereo" mode! I rarely am pumping more than 50W per channel anyway, so this was the sweet spot for this room. This beats the pants off any of those all-in-one home theater speaker kits with tiny speakers all around -- if the woofer in each speaker is not bigger than a CD, then forget it.
Best of all, my wife does not "hate those ugly speakers" like she did my previous setup. These things just disappear into the ceiling and go unnoticed until you point them out to guests. And if you have to remove them, just use a couple of paper clips to hook the grill, pull it off and access the screws that loosen the drywall clamps. Easy.
Only thing I might would have done differently would be to put some insulation up in there to catch the stray sound bouncing around beneath the upstairs floor. And I still may do that.
Shipping was quick and the 3 boxes were secure inside one larger box.
Would recommend these for any friend who wants to have a mid-grade home theater setup within a budget. Just don't forget the 10" sub.

LG LHB953 1000-Watt Blu-ray Disc Home Theater In a Box Review

LG LHB953 1000-Watt Blu-ray Disc Home Theater In a Box
Average Reviews:

This system is great. What I was most concerned with in buying this system was the convergence of the Web, television and music in our family room. This system seemed to meet all my requirements on paper and I was satisfied when I received the box.
Setup was simple and everything you need is in the box except for one thing: it needs to be near your router so that you can network it. My router is upstairs so I got around that through powerline networking which allows you to send your network through your power outlets. Works like a charm.
The bottom line is that I get my Netflix movies directly through the BluRay player...no waiting for the mailman for most movies. I also get FM radio and Pandora as well as my cable TV.
Great product. I recommend it.

Acer Iconia Tab A500-10S16u 10.1-Inch Tablet Computer (Aluminum Metallic) Review

Acer Iconia Tab A500-10S16u 10.1-Inch Tablet Computer (Aluminum Metallic)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm typing this review on the A500 now. I was deciding between an Ipad2 (and had actually purchased one), an Asus Transformer, and the A500. I became frustrated with the limitations of the Ipad 2, and once it became clear that the Asus Tranformer wouldn't have adequate stock for weeks, I decided to give the A500 a try. No regrets, and I ended up returning the Ipad2.
Why this is better than an I pad 2 -
- Micro SD card slot gives this all the memory you practically need with just a 16 gb model. Cards are cheap - you can get a 32 gb card for $50. No card slot on the I pad 2.
- USB port makes file transferring easy. You can plug in external flash drives or a USB keyboard. Yes, it has a USB host port so it can externally power or charge devices through the port. No USB on the I pad 2 without buying a $30 adapter.
-HDMI port - easy projection to your HDTV. The A500 screen has about the same aspect ratio as most HDTVs, so you will be able to take full advantage of the area on your HDTV. With the Ipad2, you need a separate $39 adapter for this, plus the IPad 2 screen is a different aspect ratio than most HDTVs.
-Android Honeycomb is way better than Apple iOS. It's much more customizable and supports true multitasking. Yes, iOS has a simpler, dumber interface that your grandma can use, but for me it is too simple and limited. Plus, with Honeycomb you are not chained to using ITunes to manage your content. You can just plug it into the USB port of your PC and manage files like you would any external USB drive.
-If you use Google applications like Gmail, Picasa, Docs, Maps, Youtube, etc., the integration is excellent. You log in with your Gmail account and all your Google data is synched to the device within minutes.
Don't believe the reviews about lack on apps for Honeycomb or frequent crashes. I have had almost no issues in a week of use. Most of the apps for Android smartphones I tried work fine and there are over 65,000 of them now. The Android market is better than the Apple market because there are a lot more free apps.
Because of the USB port this is a better value than the Transformer too, which doesn't have USB port without the separate docking station.
This is a fast, powerful tablet, great screen, long battery life (I'm getting two days with normal use). A good value.

BOSE 301-V Stereo Loudspeakers (Pair) - Black Review

BOSE 301-V Stereo Loudspeakers (Pair) - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Summary: A pleasant sounding speaker for back ground listening but over priced and out classed by the competition. Tonality is distorted to produce pleasant sound rather than accurate sound. Bass is loose and wumpy sounding. The 301's can shake the room but only over a limited range of bass frequencies. Direct-reflecting design hurts imaging. The combination of bad imaging, unrealistic tonality and loose bass make them a poor choice for home theater. Fit and finish are only OK for the price.
Background: My roommate has a pair of 301s set up in our living room. I have a more expensive "audiophile" type system set up in the side room. Often I think it's hard to get good product reviews off the internet. You either have the people who *hate* the company (pick one) and are out to trash the name or you have people who bought the product and are defending their choice. You rarely have someone who has spent considerable time with the product (not just 15 minute store demo) yet doesn't care if the product reviews well or poorly. As I had nothing to do with the purchase of these speakers I don't care if they are good or bad. I have put effort into proper setup since I do listen to them frequently.
Basically, they are not *bad* but you can do better for the same money. I don't expect these to match the various, more expensive speakers in my side room system while my roommate had these in the living room (Meadowlark Kestrel, Vandersteen Model 3, Magnepan MMG, NHT 2.5i, Pioneer HPM 100). However, I have heard similar priced models that I like better (PSB, Paradigm, NHT, Boston Acoustics, B&W). Many high end manufactures extend their lines and expertise into the Bose price range. The sound:
Imaging: These really do not image well. As Bose says, these are sound everywhere speakers. That means you have a dispersed sound rather than tight imaging. An orchestra sounds wide and tall... so does a single guitar or the drop of a penny in a movie. This allows the speakers to sounds very big but, unlike some of the alternatives, you will never be able to tell the piccolo player is sitting just to the left of the first flute. This is not really a disadvantage if you aren't the type who sits in the sweet spot to listen for a while. But it can be a problem if you want to use these for home theater without a center channel. On the other hand, this is a reasonable trait if you turn on the music while walking around the house they will be fine.
Tonality: They don't have a very clean tone. Bose has tuned this speaker to make everything sound pleasant if not really true to the recording. Again, if you just want something nice to listen to in the background they will serve this function well. These speakers are excessively warm. They boost the mid bass and roll off the highs. Music will never become fatiguing but you traded realism for that tonality.
Bass: Several compromises were made here. Admittedly, the Bose can make the room shake with a moderately powerful receiver. This was great for college parties and OK for movies but it has limits. First, they have very limited bass range. These speakers do not go deep and they can not present all bass evenly. They favor certain notes over others (one-note bass). They excel at turning Watts into mid-bass but they just can't go really deep. I would guess they are done just under 50 htz. This is not shameful given the size of the speaker and /or price but people are often surprised when they learn how much bass is still left untouched whey they hear better speakers. Additionally, the 301's lack controlled bass. A tight thunderclap sounds like a suggestion of thunder. One of the true marks of a good bass speaker is the ability to *stop* producing bass in a heartbeat. That's what makes thunder clap and a kick drum kick (tight Bang! versus a loose wump like that car stereo next you at the light). The 301's wind up their bass then wind it down when they are done. The price competitive speakers from the companies above are far more nimble with the ability to start and stop quickly. Think of bullet train vs sports car. The bullet train Bose may be fast but it takes a long time get going (generate the desired frequency and amplitude) and a long time to stop. The entry level products from the like of NHT, PSB, Paradigms are like sports cars. Their top speed may not be as fast as the train but they can accelerate, turn and brake quickly (dynamics and transients). Which is better? Well if you just want to shake the room at one frequency go for the Bose. If you want to have tight, crisp bass, get something else.
Home Theater: Due to the warm forgiving sound of these speakers I found them OK for music. Two channel home theater is a different story. Without the center channel it's important to have good imaging. That imaging keeps the sounds on the screen rather than all over the room. The 301's poor imagining comes back to haunt. A single voice or clink of keys becomes the size of a full orchestra smeared across the room rather than staying in the TV where they belong. In addition to the poor imaging, the poor bass is also an issue. The loose wumpy bass does little justice to explosions and mechanical sounds. The "pleasant" tonality strips believability from every day sounds.
Overall I can see people saying they like the speakers because they sounds pleasant. They really work well as relatively low cost background speakers. The problem is they can't deliver anything more when asked. I accept that if they were $150 a pair but given the good choices for the $300+ asking price... well Bose is lucky most consumers don't bother to cross shop or that fewer stores sell the other bands I mentioned.
If you are seriously considering these speakers check out Audioreview dot com. They have good reviews of similar priced products. It's OK to buy them, just cross shop first.

Philips HTS6515D 2.1 DVD 1080p HDMI Dolby Home Theatre System Review

Philips HTS6515D 2.1 DVD 1080p HDMI Dolby Home Theatre System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great system for those who don't want or can't fit 5 speakers in their room and need a smaller system. Luckily there is little sacrificed for its small and sleek style, the sound quality is excellent (just check its specs) and it is quite powerful (I need to keep the volume low so as not to annoy my neighbors). Plus it has a very good DVD player that upconverts to 1080p, they even provide an HDMI cable and as an added bonus for those who have foreign DVDs is that it is very easy to remove the region coding, Philips kindly uses the same unlock code on all its HTS systems (just google videohelp region code and then search for one of its cousins such as the HTS6100).
The reason that I did not give it 5 stars is first it only has digital coaxial input and not Toslink input. Unfortunately both my TV and HD cable box only has optical Toslink audio output. I easily fixed this problem by getting a Toslink to coaxial converter like this one Cables To Go - 40019 - Optical To Coaxial Digital Audio Converter (make sure you get both coaxial and toslink cables). The other thing that I do not like is the placement of the built in ipod dock, which ruins the aesthetics when you dock the ipod, which just sticks out. The dock however works quite well, after a minute or so it configures itself to the ipod and you can listen to music and watch videos on your TV.

APC SMT750 Smart-UPS 750VA LCD 120V Review

APC SMT750 Smart-UPS 750VA LCD 120V
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Purchased this to replace an older APC that went on the fritz. Though the company sent me a direct replacement for the older APC, I went with this purchase to future proof as it seems newer computers will need this type of UPS that produces a sine wave output. Item works as any other, except it comes with a web-based system to configure options, shutdown notifications, etc. To that end, I have a reliable electric system that this has not had to do too much 'work' so I cannot comment on its functionality under demanding conditions.
The buttons and LED on the front are neat, though not user-friendly enough to figure out if your UPS will be installed in a remote or difficult to access area, as mine is. Basically I went to shut it off and accidentally changed it to Spanish menu's which was not fun trying to get it back. It does show the load currently on the system, which is neat but not something Im going to be using very much since its tucked out of view.
Probably would buy again, given reputation of company, replacement policy, etc.

Polk Audio SurroundBar Speaker System (Single Speaker) - Black Review

Polk Audio SurroundBar Speaker System (Single Speaker) - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My Home Theatre was a reasonable system by any measure and better than most. However, my wife re-arranged the living room furniture and in one stroke my cherished system was made redundant. My two rear wall mounted speakers were now on my left and with no possibility to be mounted somewhere else.
It was time to look at the Polk & Yamaha products.
Being unable to audition a Polk SurroundBar and Yamaha YSP-1000 in an A/B comparison, I consequently decided to purchase both, with the idea that I would eventually keep one and sell the other.
I have now had both units for about 10 weeks and when doing my A/B comparisons, both systems are set up so that one speaker is sitting just above the other, playing the same material and with instant A/B switching via remote control.
Note - It takes quite a few readings of instruction manuals to eventually understand how to set them both up properly.
After comparing Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, Pink Floyd Pulse and a variety of CDs and music videos, my assessment is :
1/. Both products do produce a satisfying sound field effective for watching movies (albeit in very different ways).
2/. In my living room ( which is pretty "live") and my equipment with the Polk, they both sound remarkably similar. This was a big surprise to me.
On CDs and some music videos, most noticeable differences in sound is mostly due to subwoofer performance.
3/. Does either system produce effects equal to a 5 channel system with discrete rear speakers ? Of course the answer is "no". Neither of these systems can produce rear surround effects as distinct as those generated by rear surround speakers.
But in so many ways this question misses the real point as to the issues these products successfully address :
4/. Let me rephrase the question :
Do both systems produce a big sound field that envelopes you, similar to what one might experience at a real cinema? The answer is "YES"
Do you hear convincing surround sound effects as intended by the movie producers, immerse you into the movie and thus enhance your enjoyment ? Once again the answer is "YES".
5/. If you want decent home theatre sound but cannot install a multi-speaker surround system or you simply don't want to, then these products are a solution that do work.
6/. After reading forums on the net, I had the idea that the Polk was going to sound better than the YSP when it came to music. Actually for CDs etc, they both sound about the same, have a similar tone, both produce a big sound, go as loud as each other (and that can be very loud indeed). Nothing to distinguish one as being really better than the other, assuming that the Polk is coupled to a quality surround amp and sub. The surprise here was that the Yamaha with it's myriad of "tiny" 2 watt amplifiers is comfortable at really loud sound levels.
7/. Which is better?
Both have plus and minus points so it isn't that clear cut.
Yamaha YSP-1000 with matching YST-SW225B 150W subwoofer :-
PLUS points :-
+ Guaranteed a great sounding Home Theatre system. Yamaha engineers have made sure of that.
+ In-built power amplification ( this is termed an 'active' speaker and is generally a desirable configuration)
+ Decent pre-amplifier functionality eg volume control (with dB level displayed), bass & treble control, audio & video input selection ( selectable 4 sources ), auto-room equalisation, plenty of surround sound modes, IR signal pass-through, a remote control capable of macros etc. In fact the YSP-1000 has a remarkable amount of technology literally stuffed into it.
+ More effective in producing distinct surround sound effects than the Polk, especially when set up in it's "ideal" configuration. ie centred against a wall in a square room.
+ YSP can effectively compensate for being in a corner position (contrary to the notion that the YSP works well only when in an ideal environment)
+ Remote can control other manufacturers products.
+ All you need extra is a DVD player and a TV.
MINUS points :
- Requires side and rear walls.
- Looks bulky and industrial, in my opinion not an attractive addition to any living room.
- The Titanium colour ( more like dark grey ) is not a good match with most silver big screen TVs.
- The remote is a bit frustrating at times, too easy to be in the wrong control mode, eg you find yourself changing TV channels when you may intended to change surround mode.
- No HDMI input/output
- Cannot transcode between Composite & Component video signals. You are committed to an all Composite or all Component input / output video signal pathway. ( Not really a problem if every device you connect to the YSP's video inputs has Composite Video out.)
- On-screen menues only available with Composite video. So if you decide to go all Component Video pathway for best picture quality, you then lose your YSP's On-Screen menues.
- No S-Video inputs
- Probably impossible for an owner to tell if any of the 40 speakers/amplifiers inside the cabinet have failed and need replacing.
- Should have a DVD player in built.
POLK SurroundBar :-
PLUS points :
+ Looks great, visually complementing most big screen TV sets very nicely.
+ Does not require side and rear walls to your listening room.
+ Similar to the Yamaha with respect to it's capability to produce a big, convincing sound field.
+ Would make an excellent choice for an "all-in-one" Right/Centre/Left front speaker in a conventional surround system.
MINUS points :-
- Requires investment in a 5 channel home theatre Amplifier plus a Subwoofer
- Not guaranteed a great sounding Home Theatre system. The Polk's full potential could be easily compromised by a `weak link" resulting from a poor choice of ancillary equipment.
- Surround effects are never really localised, rather you hear them as originating from a hazy, general area, as comapared to the Yamaha which creates a more convincing localisation of the effect.
8/. Conclusion :
For good looks - POLK SurroudBar
For rooms without side or rear walls - POLK SurroundBar
For square or rectangular rooms, even with the YSP in a corner - YAMAHA YSP
For "most bang for your dollar" - YAMAHA.YSP
Both sound good ( remarkably similar ) and will probably end up costing about the same to set up once you add the necessary ancilliary equipment to the Polk.
In my particular situation I am trying to rid my living room of as many boxes as possible. Consequently, if Polk had managed to squeeze in a pre-amp and power amp into their SurroundBar and charged accordingly, then the Polk would be my first choice. It just looks that much better than the YSP unit does.
Unfortunately they haven't, so Yamaha stays and I'm now selling off the Polk along with my existing Denon amp, B&W sub & Anthony Gallo speakers.

A perfect sonic and stylistic match for flat-panel and shallow-case TVs, the Polk Audio SurroundBar is designed to offer elegant, high-resolution, single-source surround sound. It comes with everything you need to mount it above, below, or even on your television, and it works with any surround sound receiver. It's an ideal listening system for anyone seeking rich, enveloping surround sound without the space commitment or hookup hassles of a multispeaker system.Polk Audio's patented SDA Surround technology means there's no need to install rear speakers. SDA Surround technology is founded on extensive research into the way human ears process sound and perceive directionality of sound. Unlike speakers or surround algorithms that merely simulate surround effects, the SurroundBar reproduces discrete, multichannel surround sound using a patented combination of signal processing and acoustical geometry called Acoustic Wave Front Reconstruction (AWFR). Since the SurroundBar works directly upon your ears and requires no special room characteristics, it can deliver room-filling surround sound nearly anywhere. As with conventional 5.1-channel systems, you'll hear the best surround effects when you're centered directly in front of the SurroundBar. However--unlike conventional 5.1 systems--the SurroundBar delivers surround sound regardless of how close or how far away you sit. While it's technically a single speaker, the SurroundBar contains seven active drive units, three tweeters, and inputs for all five primary surround channels: front left/center/right and rear left/right. Multiple drive units spaced roughly the same distance apart as your ears allow the speaker to keep you from discerning the actual sound sources. Instead, it will seem as though sound is coming from all around and behind you.The SurroundBar's circuitry maintains proper isolation of all amplifier channels and will function correctly with any amplifier or receiver capable of driving a 4 ohm load (that is, capable of powering 4-ohm speakers). Many receivers are rated for maximum power into 8 ohms but function perfectly well--functioning with about half their rated power--into 4 ohms, too. Wiring a stand-alone powered subwoofer in line with the speaker (a procedure illustrated in the product manual) will heighten the sense of realism and visceral power of the SurroundBar.For even more spacious sound, you can use the SurroundBar with your existing surround speakers, too. In such an arrangement you can wire the surround outputs from your receiver to your separate surround speakers instead of to the SurroundBar's rear-speaker terminals, using the SurroundBar for the front left, center, and right channels only. Better still, if you have a 6.1- or 7.1-channel receiver, use one of your surround speakers as the rear-center speaker in a 6.1 system, or both surround speakers as 2 of the 4 speakers in a 7.1 system (with the SurroundBar's 2 surround channels in filling in the sound for the other 2).The SurroundBar must be mounted horizontally to function properly. Placement directly above or below your TV screen pointed in the same direction as the screen will give the best coordination between your surround sound and the on-screen images. Wall mounting, shelf mounting, table mounting, or stand mounting all work equally well. However, walls or other large obstacles within three feet of the sides of the SurroundBar will reduce the effectiveness of its surround delivery. Cross-corner locations will work just fine. The supplied 25-foot, 10-conductor cable is color-coded and clearly marked for easy hookup. What's in the Box SurroundBar speaker, 2-piece wall bracket, a center-channel base, mounting screws, 25-foot wire bundle, and a quick-start guide.

Panasonic SC-BT100 5.1 Blu-Ray Home Theater System (Black) Review

Panasonic SC-BT100 5.1 Blu-Ray Home Theater System (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
NOTE: I HAVE ADDED ADDENDUMS TO THIS REVIEW, MAKE SURE AND READ THE COMMENTS
A search of the internet will quickly reveal many in the audiophile community bashing "home theater in a box" (htib) systems like this, and many of their entirely valid criticisms of such systems apply to this unit, but it has a lot of redeeming qualities too that make me overall convinced that this is a good buy for anyone whose needs match what it provides. Also it is a pretty high end htib so the sound quality will exceed what many would expect. A quick word on settings: This unit comes with a number of effects such as surround enhancement and some pre set EQ settings. Don't use them. Maybe turn down the sub a bit and turn up the center channel, but your goal with movies is to ACCURATELY reproduce the sound as it was intended to be heard. Keep everything flat and you will hear how the movie was meant to sound. That's how I know this is a quality htib: It sounds good with everything flat)
This is a good system for what it is, namely a way to get both blu-ray and 5.1 surround in one convenient and affordable package. The rear speakers are wireless, as in there is a second amp that connects wirelessly to the main amp so you don't have to run cables from the front to back of the room although you do have to run cables from the second amp to the rear speakers. The rears are very light and thus easy to mount on the wall, and I don't worry about that lack of weight too much because surrounds really don't need much power as they just add effects. The fronts and center are much beefier and are two-ways with what appears to be real crossovers so that's pretty good for a home theater in a box. The subwoofer is (unfortunately) passive but its driver is bamboo so I don't think it has the paper-driver problems of other htibs. It seems to cross over at a decent point as the bass stays properly nondirectional. All in all, in my fairly small room it sounds really great for me, and it's pretty cool how it has all the latest surround decoders including Dolby trueHD and DTS HD.
All that said, this system definitely has some typical htib limitations: It has proprietary speaker connections so you can't use other wire without splicing. You can, however, use other speakers because the speakers themselves use standard connections (only the amp-end connection is proprietary). You can also expand to 7.1 sound either by another proprietary (and wireless) panasonic amp or the unit actually does have wired surround outputs so that you can plug in other amps and speakers for the front and back surrounds. However, the proprietary wire is permanently implanted in the subwoofer and naturally there's no way to get a nonamplified subwoofer signal out of this amp so even with some wire splicing ability I doubt you could add a powered sub. So you could upgrade the speakers but not the sub. But again all the included stuff sounds very good so I don't regard this as a dealbreaker.
In addition to a passive, nonupgradeable subwoofer and the inability to use your own speaker wire (although you can use your own speakers), the unit is VERY skimpy on inputs. No HDMI passthru, and only ONE toslink/SPDIF in, and one conventional component audio in. This means that, unless you get a switch or are willing to swap out, you can only use one source other than blu-ray with which there will be "true" surround sound. This is a problem for me because my TV does not allow the SPDIF out to output any audio except for the ATSC tuner (copyright issue) and I have both a cable set top box and an xbox 360 that I want to get surround sound from. Remember, if you plug standard RCA stereo plugs into this thing you will not get real surround, just pro logic type matrix encoded stuff.
All in all, this is still a good buy. These days you can get a 42 inch lcd 1080p tv for about $1000, and you can get this system for about $1000, and you'll have a complete home theater with display, sound, and blu ray player (which is a good final standard profile player which will support all special features except bd live), all for about $2000 and no hassles. As usual with htib, you will sacrifice upgradeability and connectivity for this convenience, and you will have a passive subwoofer. But trust me, this sounds very good for htib and at this pricepoint I recommend it highly for anyone who wants the modern high def home theater experience on a limited budget, because on that, it delivers. You will really enjoy watching movies on this thing and in the end, that's all that really matters.

Sennheiser e865 Lead Vocal Condenser Microphone Review

Sennheiser e865 Lead Vocal Condenser Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My vocal mics include an Audio Technica AE3300, a Rode M1 and an EV N/D 767A. I was looking for an easy to use super or hyper cardioid condenser mic for solo vocal performances with an acoustic guitar. The AE3300 (my other condenser) is a wonderful mic, but it picks up the guitar too much (which is a problem with processors like the TC-Helicon VoiceLive).
The Sennheiser e865 is well built and it's easy to get a nice clear, rich sound without hassle. Its plossive protection is fair to good. Its proximity effect is less pronounced than some. And its off-axis rejection is just what the doctor ordered.
For me, doing two or three church services a month through a flying PA of Mackie, QSC and JBL quality, I can't see needing to spend more more.

Yamaha RX-V667 7.2-Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) Review

Yamaha RX-V667 7.2-Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own a rx-v663 and upgraded this past weekend to the RX-V667.
Skipping the 665 model was a good thing.
This one has a great on screen GUI for changing the settings.
It's an overlay, so you don't lose the video in the background when changing settings.
It pops out from the left side and then you scroll up and down to pick the setting
to change. Then those options are popped up from the bottom of the screen and you scroll
right and left.
6 HDMI is more than enough for me, in fact I have 3 left over after changing out things.
Biggest advantage is I am now able to plug in everything in to the receiver and able to change
the label that shows up on the receiver and the tv screen when changing sources.
My components running into the receiver are as follows
Oppo BDP-83
PS3
Computer with HDMI interface
(radeon 5770 so I get sound and audio)
These next two are connected via Component video (R,G,B)
Xbox 360 (optical out for audio)
Wii
To run all these the Remote has 5 HDMI buttons and 6 AV buttons.
I can actually choose each source independently with one button, kind of nice.
I also have the YDS11 Ipod dock, it works great with the new receiver. Interface is greatly improved
with album art being shown to the left of the song title on the screen and browsing capabilty. This really looks a lot better than it did on the RX-V663 and is another overlay screen. Now they just need a good screen saver to go with it.
This would all be worthless if the sound quality did not match up with the 663.
Big one for me was continued support of DSD across HDMI. The Oppo BDP-83 plays SACD disks and so does
my PS3. The 667 has a signal information selection and from the PS3 it reports PCM as it should since
the PS3 converts it to PCM before sending the signal to the receiver. The Oppo using the same disk reports
DSD back on the receiver.
and yes the sound quality equals the 663.
Sidenote: There is an audible difference in the sound when switching to Pure Direct Mode.
I played John Hiatt's "Master of Disaster" which is a Hybrid SACD and switched between
straight and Pure Direct. Pure direct seemed to have less bass, the straight mode was obviously
making adjustments to the bass in the background. Honestly though this could be due to my
speaker setup as I do not have a sub-woofer. IT's a 5.0 setup on mine. Try Pure Direct Mode and see if
it makes a difference with your DSD/SACD disks. I thought the clarity was better.
Setup was easy, hardest part was undoing everything I had done to get everything to work on the 663.
YPAO mic setup for sound, seemed to have not changed from the last time I did it, so don't expect anything
new here.
I have not tried setting up the remote to control any other components. This did help in the end
as it cut out 2 remotes and I am down to 3 now due to eliminating a switch box I no longer needed
and the HDMI switch I bought that also acts as a fan for my PS3.

Sony LBT-LCD7Di Mini Shelf System with 7-Inch LCD Review

Sony LBT-LCD7Di Mini Shelf System with 7-Inch LCD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this bookshelf system as a Christmas gift for my wife for $427 (2009) from Amazon.com. I was hoping for something a bit more subdued, but this was what I found. I have set the system up in our built-ins around our fireplace in a great room with fantastic accoustics (high vaulted ceiling, hardwood, etc.). So, the player is in about the best install location possible. It sounds great when it has clean source material. We will use it primarily with an iPod. I've noticed that some iPod music isn't as clean as I'd like and does put a bit of mild hiss to the speakers. Whereas, a good CD recording sounds crystal clear. The bass is strong and the volume capacity is everything I hoped for. I haven't pushed it to it's limit, so I don't know where that is, but we have all the volume we need. I would recommend this purchase to anyone looking for this type of system. My biggest disappointment is that there is no visualization with the LCD when listening to music. So you have this big display with just a small bar of basic info featured as a banner at the top of the display. It doesn't even show a multiplicity of data at the same time. For instance, when you turn up the volume, all you see is volume level... No clock, no song info, no source info, etc. Whatever basic data the display is showing is all you will ever get at one time. I would have loved the option to show a graphic screensaver animation (like a Windows Media Player, etc.) but it will not. I did play a music video we had on our iPod, and it did display well, but we have few songs with videos. We will not be using the display as a mini DVD television set, so it will be grossly neglected... Too bad, since it's the coolest feature. One might think this would be a good DVD movie player for a student or military person living in a dorm room, but most people have DVD drives on their computers these days. What I'm trying to say is, I can't figure out how Sony really wanted this display to be used... It's perplexing to me. Sony? The remote control is full featured and allows you to operate even your iPod, and it has a good distance range. It would have been nice if Sony would have designed the front USB port to also act as an input for mobile devices, such as iPod's, but it's only an output for file conversion/storage to MP3 from disc. One other very minor complaint is that the speaker wires were a bit short and are fixed to the back of the speakers. Ideally, they would have had quick clamps on the back of the speakers too, so you could swap out wire lengths at any time. Since they are fixed to the back fo the speakers, I had to splice in some additional length to position the speakers where I wanted them.
On a side note, you can also adjust the orange lamp around the large volume knob on the front. It can either flash with the music to one side, the other or all-around, or it can be turned off altogether.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101-B1 10.1-Inch Tablet Computer (Tablet Only) Review

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101-B1 10.1-Inch Tablet Computer (Tablet Only)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was lucky enough to wake up early today and go to Memory Express in Edmonton and they had one. Stores received a limited amount of tablets and they were all sold out within hours, including here on Amazon. I've been playing with this thing for hours now and so far I've only had great experiences with it.
The main feature for me is the remote desktop: you can access your PC, whether it's a Mac or a PC, if they're both connected to your home wi-fi connection. You can control your PC from anywhere and use all of its features. I watched a HD movie and worked on MS Word docs, everything went smoothly.
The tablet doesn't weigh much for its size and the IPS screen is amazing, it's the same screen used on the iPad 2. I'm not a person who needs to buy products made by just one brand. I like Apple and I own a iPhone 4, but when it came to deciding which tablet to buy, I went for the Transformer because it offers me a tablet/netbook function, the best of both worlds.
The tablet itself has a microSD card slot so I already have 32GB more to use it. The docking station (which can be purchased by 149.99) has 2 USB ports and 1 SD Card slot.
You can edit Microsoft Office docs on it using Polaris Office, it's great and this app comes pre-installed on it. Playing mp3s or acc files on it it's great too. You can use the app MyNet to play music from your own PC or Mac, via bluetooth.
I'm playing SNES games using SNESoid app and using a Wiimote/Classic Controller via Bluetooth and everything works great! It has native email (which Blackberry Playbook doesn't) and you can sync your calendar and contacts easily. It has full flash compatibility. For $399, there's nothing on the market with these specs. The Motorola Xoom has similar specs and it costs $200 more. It doesn't give you the option to attach a docking station with all those slots. When I buy computers, I want to be able to upload content to it easily, or transfer files from it easily as well. The Apple system is ok but needing iTunes for everything is kinda like a dictatorship. I had to jailbreak my iPhone to be able to play SNES games on it, or even listen to music on Grooveshark. That's where the Android Market comes in.
You can download any apps you want, any developer can create apps for it, it's a "free" system. It's not as wide as the App Store, but it's getting bigger and bigger by the minute. I downloaded the Kindle app and already transferred all my e-books to it (I also own a Kindle and I love it).
There are some quirks that have to be tweaked with Honeycomb 3.0 OS and that's something Google is working on. That's easy since updates will be released (an update is scheduled in 2 days). So that will improve the overall performance of the OS. But I honestly didn't have any issues with it, I really like Honeycomb 3.0 so far.
I definitely recommend this thing for people who want to use their tablets as an extension or even a replacement to their laptops. Asus has hit a home run with this one, since it costs much less than anybody else and its specs are great. It's hands down the best purchase I've had under 400 bucks.
The docking station is sold out anywhere else but I pre-ordered it on Amazon and I'm hoping to get it in a couple of weeks. I'll post a video with the combo once I get everything up and running. I'm a iOS person who's welcoming Android with open arms!
Review Update: Apr 29 2011 - Ok, so I've been using my Transformer for a few days so I'd like to add a few pros and cons to this review.
Pros: beside what's been mentioned above, I noticed that:
- multitasking is really easy on the Transformer. You can quickly jump from one app to the other, check e-mails, browse something on Wikipedia, listen to music and even have your Skype session open at the same time. I was chatting with my dad and multitasking and had no issues. The Skype app needs updates, but that's nothing to do with Asus.
- File Manager: this feature is great! You don't have to hook up your Transformer to your computer all the time to move, copy or paste files. You can create new folders and even transfer files from your microSD card straight to it. I transferred a movie from my microsd Card folder (path is root\removable to access microSD files) to my Movies folder and it was very quick. And I didn't need to plug it in in order to access or move the files.
- Widgets: Your Desktop Area (Or Asus Launcher) is very wide so you can add many widgets to it, and they're very handy. That's something that can't be done on the iPad 2. Mind you Widgets can affect the speed a bit, but nothing noticeable at all. Those people running speed tests between iPad 2 and the Transformer need to bear that in mind.
- Weight: believe it or not, it doesn't feel heavy at all for its size.
Cons: ok, so here it is:
-smudges on screen - it's a fingerprint magnet but all tablets are, so not a big deal. I'm cleaning it whenever needed using a nice cloth (the one that I use for lenses) with a bit of water/alcohol and it looks pristine after that. Let me know if you find a better way to clean fingerprints.
It doesn't need wiping on a daily basis. I looked it up and for IPS screens, the best way to clean it is to use a mix of distilled water and alcohol, but I'm using tap water. I like this thing so much that I would buy another one tomorrow if something happened to it! (wait, maybe not tomorrow, it's still sold out everywhere)
-HD video playback in Fullscreen mode using the YouTube App: ok, this might be Honeycomb-related and therefore something that can be dealt with via future updates. You might notice a bit of choppy frames here and there. I find the iOS more stable for this type of playback. But there's no problems playing HD video from your microSD card or even if you upload a HD video to the Transformer hard drive, you won't have problems watching it. There's more than enough RAM to support HD video streaming.
-charger: I'm planning on using it all the time, so the cord is not long enough. If I have it on a desk, I need a power bar or outlet really close by, to leave it plugged in if I wanna save some battery. Well, tablet + docking gives you 16 hrs of battery... so you really don't have to have it plugged in. But this suggestion could be emailed to Asus so they could release a charger with a longer cable, that would be sweet.
Other observations: Camera: not that great, it's an average camera. Am I gonna use it for super important pics? Definitely not, I got a nice camera for that. But for daily use, it's not too bad.
***UPDATE June 13*** - I've been using the TF for 6 weeks now, and I also have the keyboard dock, which I got 2 weeks ater getting the tab. I can safely say it has become my main "go to" device: web browsing, music, movies, games, word processing, reading books and comics, news, remote desktop, you name it. I still use my PC and my smartphone but not as much as I use the tablet.
- For people who wonder if light bleed gets worse as time goes by: I was lucky enough to get a unit with no light bleed other than a tiny spot (barely noticeable) on the left side of the tablet, and it's been the same since day 1. But compared to my friend's iPad, I can safely say mine has no light bleed whatsoever. Some of the newer batches got units with really bad lemons but I think this was due to ramping up the production like crazy. I heard they manufactured 300,000 units in June so I think they'll improve their quality control dept and make spanking sharp units now.
- Honeycomb 3.1: Asus was one of the first ones to release the 3.1 update and it fixed the YouTube app HD video issue (at least on mine). I think 1080p is overkill on a 10.1 inch screen so the 720p HD on the YouTube app works like a charm. Playing movies straight out of a SD card or USB drive is easy and there's no lag either, so feel free to pack lots of multimedia and play straight out of them without having to use your device's internal memory.
Touchscreen is much more responsive, browser is faster, animations flow more smoothly, full gamepad compatibility via USB, better "relationship" between dock and tablet. What really bugged me about 3.0 was that when I used the dock a lot of features seems to be toggled on/off. That has never happened after 3.1. So, overall, the update fixed a whole bunch of bugs and made the experience even better.
- Wrapping it up: battery life is great, using the keyboard to type long texts is handy... and I was able to tether the TF to my iPhone via w-fi, so now it works as a 3G-like tab. I've done both bluetooth and wi-fi tethering. Wi-fi is faster but bluetooth saves battery life. I basically do it to use Google Maps and GPS, and it's been great so far. I know they're releasing a 3G Transformer in the summer, but I don't need one since I don't wanna pay more fees to my carrier, and sign another 1 year contract just for more data plan. I can use this as a 3G alternative whenever I need a bigger screen. It works with the iPhone and I know it does work with Android devices, but I'm not sure if works with Blackberry phones. Let me know if you wanna know more about tethering and I'll be glad to help.
6 weeks after purchasing the TF, I'm still very pleased with my device.
UPDATE August 3rd 2011 - Honeycomb 3.2 main features - I got my 3.2 update a few days ago... there's just a few things that were updated, or changed. It wasn't as significant as 3.1, but here's what I noticed about 3.2: compatibility zoom for fixed size apps - it helps with apps that are not designed to run on larger screens like 10.1 inches. I tested it and it's actually a great improvement, compared to what it was in 3.1
