Kenwood Excelon KVT-696 DVD Receiver Review

Kenwood Excelon KVT-696 DVD Receiver

It's everything that's advertised. Connectivity is great (when the XM Radio isn't stuck "checking" forever). The main problem is the user interface looks like something from the '90's. You can't even see the entire names of songs because only 16 characters are displayed. It's jagged and ugly. For such a high-tech product (and market) I'm kinda shocked that the interface is so pathetic. Take a cue from the iPod (or maybe more realistically Android) and make it pretty and easy to use. The interface essentially hasn't changed at all in the last several years through several product revisions. I also used the KVT-512 and it was nearly identical. This is not good.

If you want an in dash DVD unit without navigation, then this stereo is perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! . The touch screen is smooth and the interface is very easy to navigate around. When you plug in your iPod via usb cable you can control it via the touch screen. This is probably my favorite feature because its so easy and functional. The DVD picture quality is excellent and it plays DVD movies and music. Another great feature is that you have a USB in put that allow you to connect any portable thumb drive with wma or mp3 formatted music and simply play it. to top it off the crossover system in this unit is phenomenal

JVC KW-NT1 Double-DIN Navigation with 6.4-Inch Widescreen Receiver with Detachable Touch-Panel Monitor, DVD/CD/USB/SD Card, iPod/iPhone/USB 2.0/Bluetooth Review

JVC KW-NT1 Double-DIN Navigation with 6.4-Inch Widescreen Receiver with Detachable Touch-Panel Monitor, DVD/CD/USB/SD Card, iPod/iPhone/USB 2.0/Bluetooth

(More customer reviews)
This is my JVC KW-NT1 GPS navigation REVIEW -- written on June, 26, 2009.
First off guys, This is my very first review, so I apologize in advance if I missed anything.
I have this unit for a TOYOTA CAMRY '06 and I was like everyone else when I was trying to decide which model to buy. There were NO reviews online ANYWHERE other than the video reviews from Sonic Electronix and Crutchfield (but they both did an okay job).
I am satisfied with my purchase. I bought it mid June 2009
The screen is nice, but when it is really sunny outside, the DVD video seems washed out because of the touchscreen layer. The GPS, radio, and ipod/iphone screens look fine. It's just the DVD playback that is not bright enough under extreme sunlight. When the sun is a bit more forgiving, like during sunset, the brightness is fine. And when your car is under any shade, the brightness is fine. Overall, the resolution and colors look good and the brightness adjusts to your headlights.
On other notes... The left side controls are touch sensitive, not physical PUSH buttons.
If you have a USB cord connected to the front, it'll block some of the screen view, depending on the height of the unit.
The bluetooth function works great with the iphone. Fast and responsive.
GPS options include 2D and 3D angle views. Includes useful Points of Interest (POI) locations with phone numbers you can easily dial to over bluetooth.
I have not installed HD radio, Satelite radio, or a Rear view camera.... So I can't comment on that.
I did not install this unit myself... .... So I also can't comment on that.
If you decide to keep your steering wheel controls, you'll have to buy a separate module. Using it will take some getting used to. --- This is NOT the fault of JVC, but of the makers of the steering wheel controls module/adapter. The steering wheel control module is a little slow for the volume control. Instead of a light push or tap of the steering wheel buttons, you'll have to give is a medium/hard push. Or you can hold the button down, but then the volume increases rapidly until you release the button.
Pros:
--Detachable faceplate - for added security. Includes soft case pouch for faceplate.
--Easy slot loading disc access - No motorized CD/DVD tilt (my personal preference).
--Works with iphone. Fast load times. Takes under 10 seconds to load.
--Fast GPS. Fast SD card reads. Fast iphone controls. Fast CD/DVD reads.
--FRONT AV and USB ports - USB charges the iphone while being able to use.
--Reads burned CD and DVD+R discs.
--Allows album art from iphone and SD cards.
--GPS reads out street names. GPS shows split screen detailed turns and directions. Has GPS voice lane guidance ("get on the left lane" , "prepare to turn left", etc.)
--Can listen to music while being directed by the GPS navigation voice
--Can play audio books at normal and above average speeds.
--Has a simple adjustable equalizer settings
--Reads my Sandisk 16GB (class 2) SD memory card - this is not official by JVC though
Cons:
--No volume knob.
--Low brightness in DVD video playback under extremely sunny days. --Doesn't automatically tag song or band names from the RADIO.
--No real time traffic GPS updates.
--No video playback from an SD card.
--No button color light choices (a choice of blue, green, or red would have been nice). No screensaver choices or customizable menus.
--Removing the faceplate takes getting used to. Not a big deal...
--NOTE:(press the button to eject the faceplate, then lift UP towards the sky then out)
--must remove faceplate to access SD card slot
--must keep SD card in the slot if you plan on adding your own customizable Points of Interest (POI) locations.
--Speed limits are not always displayed... depends on your city
--bluetooth phonebook transfer not compatible with the iphone
By law you're not allowed to use navigation while driving. In order to use navigation and the hands free dialing (as well as DVD playback) while driving, you need to bypass the parking brake switch built in to EVERY IN-DASH car navigation.
Go to a car stereo installation shop and have them connect the "parking brake" wire to a ground source. This will fix your problems!Overall, I really like the unit. This is my first GPS in-dash unit. I would recommend it. Do not pay retail prices for this model or any model. I would try calling different local car audio installation shops and see if they have it in stock. Places like Walmart, Crutchfield, and Sonic Electronix overcharge! This model is not available at Best Buy or Mobile One.
I give it a 9 out of 10. A+
The overriding decision for me to buy it was:
-- IPHONE compatible
-- built-in Bluetooth
-- fast loading times (music, GPS, startup time)
-- DETACHABLE FACEPLATE
-- no motorized CD tilt mechanism
-- front USB input
I hope this helps!

Jensen VM9224 Double DIN MultiMedia Receiver with 6.1-Inch Touch Screen Review

Jensen VM9224 Double DIN MultiMedia Receiver with 6.1-Inch Touch Screen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My first review, I wanted to drop some info here since I looked all over the internet before purchasing this unit and could not find anything. Yes I bought blind...
Initially I was skeptical of buying something other than Pioneer, as that's what I've had since Clarion went downhill in the late 90's. So far I am very pleased with this unit.
Pros:
Unit looks good
Graphics are simplistic and attractive - no funky colors here, almost stock in appearance
Screen is sharp and clear 800x480 resolution
Sound quality is better than expected
Video bypass is super simple - ground pink wire - no nag screen
Includes everything you need to install and operate
Front and rear USB ports
Supports 16 gig SD card - haven't tried 32 gig yet
Played most of the random downloaded movies I put on the SD card
Menus are easy enough to navigate
Optional bluetooth works very well
Cons:
Sticks out a bit from dash - had to modify my factory brackets to flush mount
Remote is terribly laid out, and some features only accessible from remote - like aspect and zoom
Unit is a bit slow scanning large amounts of media
Takes about 30 seconds to power off completely
No automatic dimmer
Volume control on unit sometimes lags
GUI not customizable
Radio reception slightly worse than others
Only a 3 band EQ? Really?
Media stops playing when you go to settings or source menu
When Subwoofer out is activated, bass is not sent to the main speakers - turn off sub out and use the rear rca out for subs
Conclusion:
Does way more than the big name brands for less than half the price.
I can have a 16 gig SD card full of movies, a 16 gig usb flash drive full of music, AND an ipod hooked up simultaneously. Would I buy this unit again? Definitely.

Kenwood DNX5160 6.1" In-Dash Double-DIN Navigation DVD Receiver Review

Kenwood DNX5160 6.1 In-Dash Double-DIN Navigation DVD Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Kenwood is pretty nice. I had it installed in my Benz and its OMG!! the clarity of it is simply astounding. I also had a rear camera installed and when its active you would think your watching a movie in 1080... The monitor is a very nice size and since it was nicely installed it looks like it came standard. When the Navigation is on and you have music playing it really does practically mute the music to give the directions that are required. In that aspect it is much better than the previous Kenwood (the one with the flipout screen). It was definately worth the purchase. Just make sure you dont get it at Car toys directly the best price was here on amazon. I also got the steering wheel control and that works great also...Make sure you add the ipod connector. I havent figured out how to do the split screen yet....but it does show semi nav on the bottom of the screen when you have it on audio and vice versa on Nav it shows the music at the bottom.

System Q EX Sound Control Five factory pre-set equalization curves (Rock, Top40, Pops, Jazz and Easy, plus a flat setting) and three speaker matching curves (OEM, 6x9, 5/4 plus a flat setting) that can be combined to give the user extreme flexibility over the sound's tonal character. The preset curves include midrange contouring, giving music more clarity and presence. System Q EX allows the user to modify the preset curves by changing the amplitude of the bass, midrange and treble compensation, and the Q of the bass and midrange compensation. I installed this unit in my 2010 Yukon SLT last night and I am very happy with what the unit offers. I removed a real GM Nav Radio and replaced it with this Rosen and like it way more than the GM original. For one thing the GPS is much nicer, the factory only worked with a North up orientation, which I hate, when your going south you will end up turning the wrong way. This unit has a nice 3D screen, more radio presets and a DVD player (which I will most likely never use). The GPS screen is not the most colorful I have ever seen, but that is of no real importance to me, although I know that some people may not think it is "cool" enough for them. It does have IPOD controls and hooked right up to my XM without any problem at all.
As far as the install, well, I did it in less than an hour. All you have to do is use a putty knife to pull the trim piece around the radio off, a 7mm nut driver to remove a total of 8 screws from the radio bracket and your heater controls underneath the radio, and one 7mm screw on the drivers side trim piece between the door and windshield where the tweeter is mounted. The new radio has interface cables that plug directly into the factory cables (takes less than 3 minutes for that part) and hook the GPS antenna to radio, plug in your AM/FM antenna and you are ready to mount the unit back into the dash. The radio will have more wires because of the wiring harness, so you have to tuck the harness back into the small opening behind the radio. Put the temperature control units back in place before you put the radio in place and then tighten up the 8 screws, put your trim piece back on and all you have left is mounting your GPS antenna. I ran the wire underneath the dash, through the fuse box and under the trim piece that holds the tweeter and let the antenna peek put the trim in the very front of the window next to the VIN plate. At that point you just put back the screw holding the side post trim piece and you are all done. It hardly takes any longer than it took me to write this review. You do not have to cut and splice one single wire. The best part was when I turned the unit on, everything worked perfectly.

Couldn't be more pleased with this rig. Installed in my 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 when my OEM stereo quit working. Installation was simple with a Metra wiring harness. Hardest part was removing existing amplifier behind the glove compartment. Hint: simply attach the parking brake lead to any ground to bypass the DVD view lockout. Great intuitive GUI. Superb sound.

KW-NT30HD Automobile Audio/Video GPS Navigation System Review

KW-NT30HD Automobile Audio/Video GPS Navigation System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used this JVC radio for 3 months now and I really like the features. I got the IPOD cable and a backup camera to use with this radio. I have been happy with the functions of the radio and after getting use to the GPS, I have found it to be as acurrate as the Garmin I have used for years. There are a few things I would like the GPS to do that I think a software update would fix, 1 is to have the speed limit of my vehicle displayed, 2 is to have the GPS work automatically with time zones when trips arrival times and the system time is set. The GPS system knows this data, so why not display it on the screen. Once I got familiar with the menus it is fairly easy to move between functions, but it does take a little time to get through the screens because there are so many features. The back up camera I purchased failed within 3 days, but the camera manf. replaced it with no problem. The radio installed fairly easy in my 2007 Ford Fusion, however the GPS link cable barely made it to the rear trunk lid. It can be mounted in other places but I wanted it outside the car and out of sight as much as possible. The radio HD stations do not seem to work as great as far as the reception as the factory radio. When I do an auto-tune I get the strongest 5 stations and sometimes not 5. I read that the radio has to be grounded well and I have not verified this yet. Overall I like the purchase of the radio, the sound is great.
