Sony CFD-E100 Portable CD Radio Cassette Recorder Review

(More customer reviews)I looked for a long time for a stereo, boombox or undercounter radio that would fit well in my kitchen. I wanted something that would fit in a small space but still sound good and be able to tune in my favorite radio station which is not always easy to get in. I read tons of reviews and was getting very discouraged. But the Sony CFD-E100 is perfect for my needs. It sounds great, looks good, takes up only a little space and does *not* use the cord as an antenna - which I have found to be an annoying "feature" of some radios. Also, the case is that same white appliance plastic that my coffee maker and toaster are made from, so it blends well in my kitchen and is easy to clean. I also think it's attractive with the blue accents. To save space, the CD player is vertical and in the front, while the cassette player is in the back. So you can't see the cassette player from the front, which confused my husband for a minute. But there's no reason that one way or the other has to be the "front" so you can just turn it around if you want to use the cassette player and need to see it. It also comes with a remote, which I have not had the need to use.
Pros:
* small footprint
* digital tuner that is fairly strong
* CD player
* cassette player-recorder
* pull-out antenna (not one of those "antenna in cord" things)
* easy to clean
* decent speakers

Cons
* a little hard to figure out how to set the radio pre-sets
* price - I paid $70 - not outrageous but not inexpensive

(More customer reviews)I purchased the BeoSound 1 in Dark Grey from the B&O Amazon store two months ago, and I wanted to really get to use it before writing this review. I recently moved into a loft apartment with a large open living/dining area and 12 ft. ceilings and I wanted a single solution for my audio needs. I wanted an all-in-one package, without worrying about how to hide speaker wires, and I also wanted a clean aesthetic. At first I was leaning towards purchasing the Bose, but I was not very impressed when I visited their local store. I read up online on the BeoSound 1 (including all the negative reviews at the audiophile sites) and decided to buy the unit without even listening to it first.
Before I bought the BeoSound, my favorite place to hear music was in my car. After two months of very broad and rigorous play, I can confidently say this is the best electronics purchase I have ever made.
The unit is beautifully designed and pleasing to the eye (which is also why I chose B&O) but more importantly fills my space with music without any distortion at upper levels. I've enjoyed the warm rich tones of Ray Lamontagne, Sufjan Stevens, David Gray, City and Colour, Gustavo Santaolalla; the full array of sounds from Zero 7, The Postal Service, Incubus, Thursday, The Juliana Theory, MuteMath, Dredge, The Black Keys; and the hard hitting beats played by GusGus, Swayzak and Damian Lazarus; all with absolutely amazing clarity!
Everyone who has experienced it is blown away that such a crisp, full and joyous sound is coming from `that one small speaker???!!!' If you are thinking of buying the BeoSound 1, do it. You will not regret this purchase!!
Update: I recently purchased the input adapter and get the same crisp, clear amazing sound plugging my mp3 player or my laptop into my BeoSound.

Olympus 25mm f/2.8 Pancake Lens for Olympus Digital SLR Cameras Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this lens from B&H about a week ago. It was the only one I have seen anywhere in stock, and I grabbed it up instantly, and no others have appeared.
Complaining about the lens cap will be common to all reviews. It is a metal screw-on disc, that is hard to work unless the camera is facing up. Order a 43mm pinch lens caps when you order, along with a protective haze filter. Don't plan on a thick filter, such as a polarizing filter or a stack of filters, because you will cut off the corners of the image. Even though this is a standard quality Zuiko (expensive but not REALLY expensive) it has a metal (not plastic) connector linking it to the camera body. If you have lived your entire photographic life with a zoom lens, you may not like a prime. You do your framing by zooming your feet back and forth from the subject--or move the subject. Be careful at the rim of the Grand Canyon!
This lens is thin and light. It won't zoom, of course, but if you have 8 or 10 megapixels, you can crop and still leave respectable resolution. It's great for when your evolt series Olympus DSLR has to serve tourist duty or for holidays with the family. Auto focusing in low light is accurate and, although this is not really a macro, my rose pictures are quite presentable as are those of people.
If you already have one or more of the kit lenses for the 400/500 series, you probably have the 50mm point covered. If you want portability and don't mind the challenges of a prime, this might be for you. I suspect that it will be cheaper a few months down the road.
