Update 9-16-2010 This is no longer their top of the line cam - the new one is based on this camera but includes a GPS and tags your images with location. You'll need their viewer to see the map movement as the video plays.
Update: 7-2010
Tonights episode of Dirty Jobs showed this camera strapped to a head strap for the host, Mike Rowe, who was 408 feet above the cement floor decending & window cleaning in Hawaii. Troy chickened out on the first 100 feet so alot of the contour HD footage made it into the show. By the 300 foot balcony they got troy on the ropes but his hair got snagged in the safely line and had to get his second "shearing" on Dirty Jobs - it was also filmed on contour HD cams 300' above hawaii. The quality was as good as the cable company could deliver in their 6:1 re-compression of HD. A full HD viewfinderless camera has value when you must get the shot.
using a sandisk 16GB microSD card and the maximum detail [1080P] + best quality I could get 3 hr, 6 minutes of video recorded with battery leftover. If you use the lower resolution setting the battery may be the limiting factor - I have not tried that yet.
I bought this to produce a bluray disc of a police helicopter team, using a gyro stabilized canon professional camera in back and wanting a 2nd angle up front. This comes with an adhesive patch that sticks to the side of the pilot's helmet to give a 135 degree wide field of view. The integrated rails on both sides permit the ultimate flexibility in mounting the camera, and second options for this cam are car mounts, etc.
The quality is GREAT. The lens is the downfall - there is some pincushion effect due to the inexpensive lens and wide angle. I'll deal with it for the price and the shots you can get with it, plus I can trim out the distortion in post editing.
One note - the output is .mov which is fine for macs, but for pc's you will need to transcode if you run premiere pro cs4 from adobe as it does not import .mov natively. Perhaps that is a good time to clip the edges where the bent picture is most noticable.
Another factor to like is the simplicity. With gloved hands you slide the top forward to record and back to stop, with a beep to start and and double beep to stop - it's very hard to mess up except for your horizon, which is why there are detents and lasers.
Detents and lasers?
Yes, - there are detents in the event you mount it on the right and left hand side of a helmet or rotate it in a mount. The 2 lasers can be turned on to tell you what is level with resepect to the imager. This is helpful when you rotate it but you must manually keep track of the bottom of the screen (below the laser points ) as you rotate it, otherwise your output will be upside down.
For the price, you simply can not beat it. Buy a 16 GB sandisk micro-sd card to go with it Sandisk 16GB Microsd Card Note that they have a low packaging option which the card is inside a plastic carrier and inside an ESD bag but no box or other trash with it that goes in the landfill - smart packaging.
One of the other great applications for this is taking HD video where you otherwise would NOT take your $3K camera - the beach - the water park - etc. You won't get the absolute best quality but you will get 1080 p hd that is playable on macs or pcs in native players!
Another great use is for children. It's easy to use, inexpensive, and highdef. For the kids who are beyond the toy grade cameras but not ready for a professional unit, this fills the gap. Adults will love its simplicity. On or Off - no fancy buttons to press, and everything complex is set while attached to the computer.
Finally there is my use - have a 2nd angle view for use with NLE systems. You can now do a/b video fades by time syncing the output from this camera with your primary cam. Be sure to expose something that will sync the two that gets recorded on both at the start of shootng.
I'm only deducting a star becuase of the pincushion effect of the lens. I realize for this price you are not getting an HD lens, and I realize that HD will show any defects, but a few more dollars in the lens would have made this 5 stars - it is oh so close. Be sure to pick up extra memory and batteries if you plan to use it at maximum definition because it makes some big files fast.

The video is a test of stabilization of on then off then on again up to 60x while balancing the camera on my car door.

I was looking for quality, optical zoom power, and stabilization at high power when I found this camera.
The higher priced Sony and Canon models have lower optical zoom of 10x or 12x compared to this one of 26x. Up to 40x still looks superb. The zoom is fast and variable.
Has great stabilization and an icon to touch that really locks on and holds the subject still. No more tripod needed in most cases. Also the AF lock will hold moving objects in focus when touching the LCD monitor.
You don't need a wide angle attachment either with the 28mm lens. Also, the lens with 1.8 gathers plenty of light.
It has a manual/auto control button on the camera body.
I will use this at outdoor events and anything of interest. Videos look professional with the stability.
The battery is good for at least an hour of video with on and off shooting.
Stills are good enough quality for me at 5mp.
There are 6 quality settings available depending on your computers processing power.
So far I haven't found anything bad about it other than it doesn't come with any features like high speed, time lapse or auto record.

Well well well another camcorder review.
Panasonic camcorders are something I am quite well informed upon. The last Panasonic camcorder I used was a DV model, not to bad for it's time but this the Panasonic HDC-SD900 is truly remarkable. I am one of those who got into my mind the only way to get great video at a moderately low price was to buy a DSLR like the Canon 600D. That notion has now been wiped from within me since receiving this camcorder.
The exterior design is decent the whole body is matte black excluding the back of the flip out 1180 degree 3.5 inch screen which is glossy black. This does have a touch screen although it's resistive based meaning it's designed for a stylus but this is clearly intended for fingers so it should be capacitive. The back of the camera sits a big battery which will give you around 2 hours of recording and 3 hours of playback with full charge, which isn't bad at all. You can purchase bigger batteries for longer record times but they will protrude out of the camera which i'm not a fan of. The HDC-SD900 has something which I was a little surprised to see on a camera nowadays and this is a view finder. It works just like any other view finder I have ever used and it's in full color and I was definitely not expecting to see one, so if you like to have a view finder this camcorder has it. On the right hand side of the camcorder a very comfy carrying strap is to be found. It doesn't dig into your hand and feels kind of like a marshmallow. The camcorder isn't at all heavy and the actual build is very solid and rigid, it just feels really well made.
To function for the main tasks you will use the buttons nearest to you when holding the camcorder, these include the zoom, the record button, the photo button, the trigger switch for entering different modes, a button to toggle O.I.S. (stabilisation) on and off and a manual switch to enter the menus. Then you have the buttons housed around the touch screen which are slow zoom and a record button. Then you have some more buttons which sit inside the living space of where the screen closes which are the power button and a button to turn the camcorder onto 1080 mode. All in all the buttons are straightforward enough to use and easy to get on with. The touch screen is the place to go to when operating the menu and viewing movies and photos and it works just fine but it should be capacitive.
With 14.2 Mega Pixels onboard the Panasonic HDC-SD900 takes incredible still photos. This camera is all about the film really like all camcorders so still photos are a nice feature that usually don't provide the same quality image as a compact digital camera. Photos were true to life with deep blacks very very vivid colors and when in low light situations it's built in flash works a treat.
Video taken is utterly remarkable. First off Panasonic have built in a LEICA lens and a 14.2 mega pixel sensor and an Advanced 3MOS System and Hybrid I.O.S and 12x Optical Zoom. All this combines together to deliver stunning and truly breath taking footage. Colors pop. It's crazy crisp and clear. The auto-focusing is quick, it's practically instant. The contrast and light intake is also very impressive having a great deal to do with that awesome lens and it performs exceptionally well in low light. I use iMovie to edit the footage and I transfer the footage from the camera using a USB cable which works absolutely fine and iMovie speaks to the camera with ease. Panasonic were nice enough to include iFrame which is an Apple video format, this works seamlessly when importing footage into the iMovie App on the iPad 2.
The onboard microphone uses DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 and it's also like the video very crisp and clear. Sound is definitely coming from a 360 degree perspective which I have never seen on a camcorder before. When you play the audio back the zooming and overall camcorder noise operations are unheard.
When playing back the footage I had taken you realise the true potential of what this camera can do. When you see what your shooting via the 3.5 inch screen it really doesn't justify itself like when it's played back on my 27inch iMac display.
A few other things to note with the HDC-SD900 are that it can shoot in 3D with the appropriate accessory, you can hook it up via HDMI, it also works with VIERA Link and if you choose to do so you can plug an external microphone in and have a place to hold it on the camcorder. On the font of the camera you have a manual focus which you can choose to either use or not and you can choose for it to be a zoom.
Overall the Panasonic HDC-SD900 is easy to use, light weight and sturdy, takes great photos, records truly stunning HD video, the stabilisation is incredible but because of that you forget all about it, auto-focusing is speedy, the inbuilt microphone is clear and crisp and battery life is long too. I wouldn't hesitate to buy if you are looking for a camcorder that takes stunning video and has an all round awesome package of features. It's the best camcorder I have ever used.

High-quality, high definition video has never looked better or been easier than with the Panasonic HDCTM900K 3MOS camcorder. Intelligent auto shooting, 12x optical zoom, and optical image stabilization make shooting simple, while advanced image processors give you colorful, clean, and sharp video. The 3MOS shooting capabilities even allow for 3D shooting when you add the VW-CLT1 3D conversion lens (sold separately).

Contour 3320 Waterproof Case for Contour GPS and all Contour Camera Mounts Review

Contour 3320 Waterproof Case for Contour GPS and all Contour Camera Mounts

Decent product. The switch is worked off a magnet. I have a buddy that uses the one for the ContourHD and he had to send his cam back because the cases' magnet defunct the actual helmet cams magnetic switch. The case itself is well built. It comes with a lock on the backside so it wont fall off the mount regardless. For some reason its a pain to get the case off the mount when you want to though. I basicly have had to use tools to wiggle it off the divit. I am not near any water at the moment but when I get back to hawaii I am going to try diving with it. I expect it to work quite well. The weight is noticable but not bad enough to deem it not worth using. Over all it does what its advertised to do, but it could use some improvements.
