I give this tv a 4 star rating.
I'm one of the people who don't like the active shutter glasses. primarily because I wear glasses already and adding a heavy second pair bothered me. My cousin purchases the sony 3d tv with active shutter glasses and I can say first hand that after watching 2/3 of avatar 3d I had a splitting headache. this pretty well told me active shutter wasn't for me. I blamed the headache on the weight of the glasses more then the shutter. however I can't prove that. what I can say is that after reviewing the differences in 3d I decided that passive 3d was for me. my reason for this is that I was able to watch 3d avatar at the theater without getting a headache so I thought since it was the same technology it should work. well it's been 3 day since i've had the lg passive 3d tv and after watching avatar, despicable me, and tangled I can say NO headaches!!!!!! I can also tell you the 3d quality may be equal to theater real3d but doesn't have the sharpness of active shutter 3d. I know I gave up quality for no headaches or eye strain. But i'm ok with that as I think the quality of passive 3d is of more value to me then having to wear heavy 3d glasses. There is also a large bonus of being able to bring home the 3d glasses from hoyts and reagal theaters to have spares.
what I didn't expect:
in the past I have owned sharp, samsung, sony and now an LG tv. in all previous cases I always used my bose theater system for sound as I'm sure everyone can contest tv's suck for sound. there isn't any depth or quality and usually they sound like talking into a can.
with LG I was seriously surprised. the sound quality was far better than my samsung 40 led tv. is it as good as the bose system? Heck no! but it did justify putting the bose upstairs in my bedroom with the samsung led and leaving the LG tv solo downstairs for the kids. :) that's a double bonus
thanks LG I got an unexpected upgrade to my nighttime tv.
quality picture of 2d:
The quality is almost equal to samsung and sony at the same size. if I where rating sony or samsung I would rate them a 5 star for quality and LG comes in at 4.75. almost as good but not quite. it's not that I see lines or pixilations or shadowing.
so my 4 star rating is because I took 1 point off for the uselss documentation they send and the lack of programable remotes without having to deal with going to the lg site and finding the key codes for it. then I gave them .25 for the sound quality. which by the way I would take off .25 from samsung and sony.
Big negative for those with boses older aquistic system the lg doesn't have a audio out port so you can't use bose aquistic with it. this didn't affect me but I know friends who own the system and wanted to give everyone fair warning. you can ofcourse use optic out as always. For the fun of it I had one friend bring over his bose system to try useing through the headset out port, it definately isn't recommended. Bad sound and bad quality plus you have to manage both remotes all the time.
anyway this was my review, as an owner of LG I'll see with this model if I ever buy another.

If your looking for a GPS that is actually sunlight readable then go with this unit. I've owned at least 10 GPS units and this is the best one I have seen as far as this feature goes. I also found the human interface design to be excellent. I'm a retired electrical engineer and I was very impressed with the man/machine interface. Simple and easy to use. You can easily customize the display field's content, text size and color. Unit acquires fast and in difficult places.
Has a real good 'feel' when you carrying it in your hand. I would give it a 5+ but I haven't had it long enough to determine if it will last a long time without breaking. I'm just going to hope.

Escort Passport 9500ix Radar/Laser Detector (Black) Review

Escort Passport 9500ix Radar/Laser Detector (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
WHICH ONE IS BETTER? READ AND FIND OUT. I bought both the Escort 9500ix and Beltronics GX65 for a week long, on dash, real world comparison. They both are sold by the same company and they offer a 30 day, money back guarantee. I figured, what the heck.....I'll try them out, side by side. These units were both mounted at the same level on the window of my truck.
I read all the reviews I could get my hands on and narrowed it down to these two radar detectors. The Escort 9500ix and Beltronics GX65 models are touted as the most sensitive window mounted units available with the new "GPS" advantage.
DISPLAY- Both units have the option of dim, medium, bright, dark and auto mode. The Escort 9500ix has blue lights. The background of this unit is black, but glows blue around the numbers, to a point of skewing the display a little bit. At night, it is easier to read. The Beltronics GX65 has red lights with a pure black background. The GX65 display is crystal clear, day or night. Advantage Beltronics GX65. Importance - Moderate.
POWER CORD- While sitting behind the wheel, the Escort 9500ix cord plugs in on the left hand side of the detector unit. The Beltronics GX65 cord plugs in on the right hand side. Depending upon the set up of your vehicle, SPECIFICALLY THE LOCATION OF YOUR POWER SUPPLY, this could make a big difference. Both of the detectors have a dark display mode, where the display goes completely black (for night use, so other drivers can't see your detector). While using dark mode, the only thing that lights up is the very end of the power cord, where it plugs into the power supply. The unit still makes sound, but only you will be able to see the light at the power supply. Very ingenious idea! Advantage to neither. It depends upon the location of you power supply. Importance - Moderate
SIZE and BUTTONS - Both units of virtually the same size, however, I personally prefer the shape and button layout of the Beltronics GX65. Importance - Low
WINDOW MOUNT - Both the 9500ix and GX65 use the same exact window mounts. For an expensive $500 dollar radar detector, I feel that the mounts are very cheesy. My old mount on my $79 Whistler was superior to this window mount. Both of these units tap the window when driving. This is due to the design of the mount. The mother company needs to improve this window mount in my opinion. Importance - Moderate
GPS "LOCKOUT" CAPABILITY - Both units have the ability to "Lockout" any false signal. When you know the detector is sensing a false signal, all you need to do is tap a button three times and it will permanently lock out the false signal. This is an absolutely fantastic feature. Both detectors also have the ability to warn you of red light cameras, photo cameras and speed traps. This is also a nice advancement. You can manually set the detector to warn you of any known speed trap in your area. Nice feature! The only GPS negative is when you're driving down the interstate and you drive over an intersection with a red light camera. The detector will sound, even though your not going through the light. This is the only negative I've found regarding the GPS system. Importance - VERY HIGH
AUTO LEARN - This feature is only on the 9500ix. You drive a false signal 3 times and the 9500ix will automatically lock out the signal permanently. For any proactive person (most people who purchase a radar detector!), this feature is not that important. The moment I drive by any false signal, I lock it out immediately. Why would I wait to drive by it 3 times? It only takes three taps of a button. On the other hand, for someone who is electronically challenged, this feature might be a lifesaver. With this feature, theoretically, after a few weeks of driving, you should be able to drive around your home area, never touch your detector and all false signals will be locked out. Therefore, no more false alarms, Police warnings only! Advantage: Escort 9500ix. Importance - Moderate
SENSITIVITY - This area is the most important of all. The reviews and tests I've read online, showed the 9500ix as being slightly more sensitive to Ka, K band and laser. It's only a few hundred feet, but that could be the difference between a speeding ticket or not.
These results are not scientific, but in every situation I encountered, the 9500ix picked up true police radar a second to a few seconds quicker the the GX65. This is really the main reason I decided to keep the Escort Passport 9500ix. In my opinion (and the scientific results back it up), the sensitivity of the 9500ix is superior to the GX65. Advantage: Escort Passport 9500ix. Importance - CRUCIAL.
THE WINNER, and better detector where it matters most is.................. the ESCORT PASSPORT 9500ix. I shipped the Beltronics GX65 back for a full refund.

Onkyo HTS590 5.1 Channel Component Home Theater Audio System Review

Onkyo HTS590 5.1 Channel Component Home Theater Audio System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this system based on reviews I read at a major retailer's website and here at Amazon. I wanted a home theater system without a DVD player which would offer flexibility. This system certainly offers performance and flexibility for the price. Many features and easy setup.
There are some easy and economical things we did to improve the sound. First, because this system allows you to upgrade the speaker wire, we bought 16 gauge speaker wire from a major discount chain for the center, front and rear channel speakers. We got 14 gauge speaker wire for the subwoofer (thicker wire passes more current to the sub and has improved the performance of the 8-inch woofer). We spent $14 for a coaxial cable at another discount store which carries the digital signal from the DVD player to the Onkyo receiver--this improved EVERYTHING--movies and music. We found speaker stands at a major discount chain for $78--speakers sound much better when they have a strong/rigid support. This may sound like stuff an audiophile would do to a $5000 audio system, but it all is cheap, easy and effective. Sound improved by about 45%.
We were surprised at the tuner in the Onkyo receiver--we're using a small Terk powered FM antenna and getting very good FM stereo reception in our hilly river community. All in all, for the small cost of this system, we're enjoying home theater greatly. We might spend a little to get a new sub at some time, but for now we're really happy.

Epson MovieMate 60 Portable Projector, DVD and music player combo (V11H319220) Review

Epson MovieMate 60 Portable Projector, DVD and music player combo (V11H319220)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Epson has created a winner here with an all-in-one projector with integrated DVD player and powered speakers. Just add a screen for an instant movie night at home or on the road... even in the backyard. The projector's 2,000 ANSI Lumen rating means that it can drive a very large screen - Epson says up to 14.5 feet diagonally, but at this size, pixel structure is visible and you need a very dark environment to prevent the image from getting washed out. But in the 80-100 inch range, the MovieMate 60 provides a bright colorful picture from DVDs, and looks even better if you plug in a high definition set-top box or Blu-ray player to its HDMI input (720p and 1080i HD sources are supported, converted automatically to the projector's native 540p resolution).
The sound isn't quite a match for the picture, with fairly weak bass, but dialog comes through cleanly and the built-in 20 watt amp and stereo speakers are strong enough to provide better sound than most TVs. The MM 60 offers a headphone output as well as a coax digital output in case you want to hook it up to a more powerful audio system. It also includes a microphone jack so you can rock out with some giant screen karaoke! The unit has a fixed lens with only 1.3x zoom which means it is not that flexible in placement. You will need to have it centered and pretty far back from the screen in order to create a large image. It does well on a coffee table about 8 to 12 feet away from the screen, depending on how large you want the image to be. For larger screen outdoor viewing, it will need to be even further back.
It's tons of fun to connect a Wii or other game console, for virtually life-sized game play. But remember to stand or sit behind the projector when playing so you won't cast a shadow on the screen. It's also an excellent choice for a senior center or local recreation center as you can be ready for a movie night or slide show in just a couple of minutes and you can pack everything away in a closet when not in use.
Although you can project the image onto a white or off-white wall, this will not give you the best results. We'd recommend using the Epson Duet Screen which isn't too expensive, and offers a 80-inch diagonal screen in 16:9 mode (or 65-inch screen in 4:3 mode). It folds away for storage and is pretty easy to set up. Its white matte screen and black frame help to enhance the contrast and brightness of the image giving you a more movie theater-like experience (but hopefully without the sticky floors!).
Overall, we give this 4 stars for its audio and video performance, but it's definitely super-fun and convenient. If you want a big screen experience virtually anywhere with a minimum of fuss and a budget-friendly price, it's hard to do better than the MovieMate 60. Great splitter, a workhorse that has been in my system for over a decade with no problems. Rack up a bunch with loose rack rails to create a modular stage box. I bought eight of these in 1996 and have trucked them around for lots of recording gigs. No repairs or issues. Don't drop them on your toe, though. Busted my big toe and it hurt like a mofo but the MS42a came out unscathed.

The video is a test of stabilization of on then off then on again up to 60x while balancing the camera on my car door.

I was looking for quality, optical zoom power, and stabilization at high power when I found this camera.
The higher priced Sony and Canon models have lower optical zoom of 10x or 12x compared to this one of 26x. Up to 40x still looks superb. The zoom is fast and variable.
Has great stabilization and an icon to touch that really locks on and holds the subject still. No more tripod needed in most cases. Also the AF lock will hold moving objects in focus when touching the LCD monitor.
You don't need a wide angle attachment either with the 28mm lens. Also, the lens with 1.8 gathers plenty of light.
It has a manual/auto control button on the camera body.
I will use this at outdoor events and anything of interest. Videos look professional with the stability.
The battery is good for at least an hour of video with on and off shooting.
Stills are good enough quality for me at 5mp.
There are 6 quality settings available depending on your computers processing power.
So far I haven't found anything bad about it other than it doesn't come with any features like high speed, time lapse or auto record.

Harman Kardon HKTS 14 6-Piece Loudspeaker System Review

Harman Kardon HKTS 14 6-Piece Loudspeaker System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Phenomenal .....
One word I could match to review of HKTS-14. After extensive research and numerous audio test of various HT speakers I zeroed in for HKTS-14 from Harman/Kardon. Key factors I used to select the systems are as follows:
1.Music performance
2.Substantial Bass response
3.If not too much near high power
4.Compact for my apartment living
5.Crisp high end music reproducing capability especially from guitar, sitar
6.Budget conscious and longterm investment
7.Proven industry name
8.Easy setup & calibration
9.Technical Support
In all aspects HKTS-14 stood out. At first I used my own samples of few songs; music excepts and took it to various showrooms to play. I tested it on Polk, Bose, JBL 300.7/200.7, Micra and HKTS-14. These are my observations
Polk -Excellent satellite speakers, but default bass module didn't impress, need to upgrade to other polk sub which are quite expensive when adding both prices and setup is too confusing.
Bose -Forget about it, sales men did not like putting my CD and when I finally made him he wouldn't pay much attention or help me in adjusting any settings. Only thing he allowed to do is to keep repeating ICE AGE movie clips over and over again in AM16 module.
One I did notice, most of dialogs and beats are directional, you can also try this next time you see a BOSE system is playing, just stand directly in line of bass module and slow move left or right you notice that bass is completely directional and all dialogs are actually come from bass module which is either below or side of system rather on center of screen.
JBL 300.7/2007 - Out of both 300.7 flared excellent, but speakers are doesn't look good though design is unique. Bass module is excellent
Micra - Speakers are good and look good but lacks overall puch, I felt that if you between 4 to 6 feet in radius from speakers they are good beyond that, sound weakens
Finally HKTS-14
Speakers are excellent and sharp to look. Coming to most important sound aspect, sound reproduced is close to the way it should be. Bass module is enough power to shake a large room (BTW my room is 19'x18'). Initially I needed some tweaking with cross over to get the right match between satellites and sub. Other things I have done to fine tune is channel volume using pink noise. Once these basic steps are done, system is all set to rock. Test DVD's I used are Lord of Rings which have enough high/low/mid ranges through the movie. Finally coming to cost whole system I put together i.e receiver+DVD player+HT speakers+ wires hardly touched $800 and I am sure this system will go very long time in my living room for TV/Music/Movie entertainment...next on my list HT projector !-)Harman/Kardon customer service is excellent by all base lines. I wrote to technical support even before I purchased the product and every time received reply from an actual person rather than automatic reply. All the replies are informative and complete and welcoming for more questions. Of late I have never experienced such a prompt service. Only companies that believe in there products can provide such service
Strengths
Room shaking sub-Excellent High & Mid range capbility of Satellites-Can match any decor especially made for plasma looks-All included kit-Auto signal sensing of Bass module-120 watts for satellites and 200watts for subWeakness
Mounting kit supplied is not easy to use-Only HKTS speaker stands can be used -Speakers are all Silver finish, but wires supplied are black.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8 14.1 MP Digital Camera with 16x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3.0-Inch LCD (Black) Review

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8 14.1 MP Digital Camera with 16x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3.0-Inch LCD (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the majority of people looking for a "pocket" camera - they can stop looking. This will honestly do for pretty much everything you really need. It's the newly released little brother to the more expensive ZS10/TZ20.
It is not perfect, of course, but even if you take a "money no object" approach to picking an upper premium compact camera - there is currently nothing on the market that is head and shoulders better than this - although there can always be a case made for different qualities.
Big Zoom - check
Good "glass" on the front - yep, Leica
Optical Image Stabilisation - uh huh, works quietly and efficiently in the background making your shots less blurry.
Good quality photos - sure - but with the caveat that a "full on" digital SLR will always do better. The photos come out are a nice colour (not too vivid - but also not too washed out) and they don't come out a funny colour under artificial lighting (some cameras can struggle and give you a funny tint under striplights or old fashioned tungsten bulbs).
Noise levels - the "speckly" bits on photos that you sometimes get in dark conditions - is definitely there - especially at higher ISO's - but you get this problem in dim lighting conditions even with all compact cameras to a greater or lesser degree. Even if you get an SLR camera - even up to a year or so ago - you'll find that they aren't infallible to this either.
HD Video - check, but in MPEG format. I think that this takes up more space than the newer AVCHD format on the SZ10/TZ18 - but I would be wary of getting a camera that uses this format if you have an older PC or laptop and especially if you have a netbook - in case the hardware can't cope. I guess Windows XP/NT/2000 users should definitely be careful - and to a lesser extent even if you have a Windows Vista machines you might think twice - especially if you are on a laptop where the hardware will always be slower than the equivalent price PC.
I have a mixture of laptops and netbooks running Windows 7 through to XP so didn't want to take the chance - especially as other family members and the kids will probably want to view some of the footage (family and my kids have the older machines whilst dad gets the upgrade LOL).
I do wonder if the AVCHD format on the more expensive ZS10/TZ20 is going to be a bit of an evolutionary dead end - just as BLU RAY hasn't really taken off - even though it's technically better than DVD - most people even if they have a big widescreen TV find that their DVD is fine (probably because the modern DVD players and TV's will upscale the DVD resolution to give a semi-HD picture quality). The ZS10/TZ20 I think gives you the option to record in both (I think I read that somewhere but if this a deal breaker you should check to be sure).
If you only want a great point and shoot camera this is brilliant and has loads of options. Not only that but the options are really well laid out and easy to understand - by which I mean the dials and menus are set out in a common sense fashion and also instead of just little symbols/icons to indicate that you are in portrait mode or landscape mode - there is a little text underneath which tells you what it will do.
I've had a number of Nikon's and Canon's - and for some reason they can still make cameras with menus and buttons that were laid out by Martians - they can be so unintuitive even for people who are really experienced photographers - and you have to keep referring to the instruction book to work out what to press or what menu icon you are looking for - and even then it doesn't stick in the memory because it's all so counter-intuitive.
If you think you might - in a little while - like to step up in your photography later and get a bit more creative - or you are thinking of this a second camera to augment your SLR - then you'll want to know that this has A LOT of manual control thrown in which is pretty unusual in the compact camera class and it has Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Full Manual modes which is quite a rarity in the pocket camera class.
If you are an experienced SLR user, I can tell you that the PASM options are pretty nicely implemented. Sensibly placed access buttons (the small round exposure button and Q Menu buttons to the right of the screen do this) and the menus are nicely set up to easily access the bits you want for Aperture / Shutter priority / full manual control. It'll never be as good as your SLR but you can't carry that around with you this easily and it won't shoot HD video either (or probably not unless you have the latest generation).
The 16x optical zoom is class leading. You can get really good close ups if you want to.
You should only compare OPTICAL zoom when you are looking at different cameras and ignore the Panasonic advertising guys (or anybody else )who point to the overall 20x zoom - because if you include the quoted digital zoom - the extra 4x zoom basically just crops your optical zoom photo in camera - and your laptop software will do that - only better - though I guess it might be relevant if you don't want to be doing with all that and just need an "okay" sort of photo).
It also has a really good wide angle lens - 24mm - which basically means you can get more scenery in the shot at the edges. The lower the number the better - and 24mm is currently the lowest I am aware of. The lower the number the more you can fit into the photo - so if you are looking at a nice panorama or want to take a photo with the whole table in the shot - you are more likely to get it with this lens than say if you compared it to other cameras - whose lens might start at 27mm, 28mm, 35mm. This small difference can be the difference between getting everything or maybe not quite getting everything into the shot that you want to.
OVERALL it feels nice in the hand - and it is quite light. It has a cool solid feel metal body and all the buttons and switches feel like they will last.
Of course none of this would be of any use if the photos weren't top notch ... but luckily they are in my opinion. Sure, you can get a little better photos perhaps - but bear in mind if you are reading other reviews - a lot of this is personal preference - like how you like your TV at home to be set up with brighter or more vivid colours or more contrast etc.
In technical terms - compact cameras are never going to match SLR cameras - because their sensors just aren't as big. This is also one of the reasons that you get more "noise" (or speckly bits) in photos from pocket cameras. The camera reviewers who do this for a living always seem to forget they are reviewing a pocket camera - as they probably all have SLR's at home - and they get a bit obsessed about how the photo appears when you look up close with a magnifying glass. Surely most people simply look at their photo on their laptop/Mac/PC and go "ooh that's nice" before deciding whether to print it or not ?
Bottom line - this gives great photos that I am more than happy with even compared with my SLR (a two year old Pentax K20) - and if you want a compact/pocket camera with the ability to take great scenery or panoramic shots and then also zoom really close on things as well then this will do a great job for you. I think you'll be pleased with this as your main or secondary camera. Try not to get too hung up on specialist reviews - a compact camera is never going to give you technical quality photos of a large SLR - but you can video with it and even the newer SLR's don't do that very well - though heaven knows why not - maybe they just have a slow escalation marketing policy and are going to deliver that to the market as the desire for SLR's with video capability increases. And remember that if you wanted a whopping great SLR you'd have got a whopping great SLR.
Also - go and have a look at all the cameras "in the flesh" in a store - to see if the size suits you. There aren't any smaller camera's with this big a zoom, but there are plenty of camera's which are smaller and more pocket / handbag friendly.
IF you consider the size too big then you should definitely look at other camera's, but if the huge range zoom is just what you are looking for (like me) - then this is for you I reckon (unless you have a strong loyalty for one or other brand in particular I guess).
IF you really want lower noise on high ISO photos but don't want an SLR and still want the big zoom then do have a look around at the competition and check out the specialist website reviews.
IF you just want a nice pocket camera that gives you nice photos - but you are on a budget then you should look at the outgoing models from all of the manufacturers - but do have a look at Fuji as they have currently (March 28th 2011) some nice deals on their outgoing models which would give you good zoom and reasonable photos eg Fuji Finepix with 10x zoom 12MP photos.
And finally don't get hung up on the megapixels on a compact camera. The quality of the "glass" on the front of the camera is likely going to have just a big - if not bigger impact. Although there are exceptions - more expensive usually equals better glass. This is why getting a formerly $400+ camera which is currently being discounted due to a newer incoming model can be a worthwhile strategy - as the originally more expensive camera will generally have better quality lenses. Anything above 10MP is going to be fine 90% of the time - and more megapixels actually often means more grainy photos in darker conditions.
PS
Here's my snapshot on two good alternatives - although there are potentially important subtleties amongst them and numerous...Read more›

JBL - Spot 2.1 Speaker System Review

JBL - Spot 2.1 Speaker System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm an audiophile and if you listen to the likes of Sting, The Fratellis, Deep Forest, Enigma, Linkin Park, White Stripes, Midnight Syndicate, ambient, electronic/trance and classical music at high volumes then you'll appreciate this system. Heavy music such as Five Finger Death Punch, Devil Driver and the like, then this system will produce 'mild' distortion at mid-to-high volume levels.
I bought these speakers because I wanted an affordable and space efficient set of computer speakers with a bass sub. My friends and family are impressed with the sound of these speakers, especially the $100 price tag. Everyone thought I paid much more.
PROs - Good sound quality for the price. Overall this system has clear smooth highs and good lows that aren't boomy. The mid-range is mediocre. The cables for each speaker, power supply and audio jack are generous. I played 'Prey' and `WOW' through this 2.1 system and I am impressed.
CONs - The bass knob at the back of the sub unit is obstructed by the "wrapper" and the knob positioning makes it difficult to reach. Mediocre mid-range.
NOTE- The mid-range is mediocre due to the small size of the satellite speakers and the mid-range and bass tones are competing over this small sub woofer. This leads that some of the mid-range is compromised when mid-to-high levels of bass are passed through this small sub woofer.

MY SETTINGS - I am adding this because I have been asked a few times about my volume settings. I have a MAC and I use iTunes. The volume for iTunes is almost set to 7/8 level, the volume on the speaker is set at max level, the bass level output on the sub is set [almost max] at approximate ¾ and I use my system's volume control panel to make volume adjustments.
For the price I would give this unit a 5 star rating, but the mediocre mid-range and bass knob access cost it one (1) star. The "wrappers" issue is minor, just be careful removing them.
WRAPPERS REMOVAL- As for the so called "removable wrappers" [aka covers] be careful about snapping the "wrappers" away from the base. In order to remove the "wrappers" you have to view the 2.1 satellite unit(s) from the bottom and look at the outer lip(s) of the metallic silver base(s) and you'll see three (3) anchor insets [anchor insets are where the "wrappers" attach/snap to the base] at the bottom of the speaker base(s) outer lip [there are 3 anchor/snap points they are approx. 2, 6 and 10 o'clock] this is where you snap the "wrappers" away from the base and also snap to the base.. I hope this helps.

Zalman GT1000 Gaming Chassis (Black) Review

Zalman GT1000 Gaming Chassis (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this case, because my son had one and I thought it was very attractive, made installing peripherals easy, and was very quiet. After receiving the case, it was quick work to install my computer components into the case, and for the most part I was very satisfied with it.
Pros: Very attractive with two 92 mm fans lit with red LED in the lower front of the case and a side panel with a clear window. There are double doors on both sides of the case with the left side secured with thumb screws and the right side doors secured with allen screws. The doors on either side are also secured with a magnet so the screws are only needed if the case is going to be moved. The back of the case has a very quiet 120 mm exhaust fan that is also lit with a red LED. Expansion cards are held in place with thumb screws, and hard drives have well padded holders and are secured with thumb screws. The padding eliminates vibrations from the drives. The case is fairly heavy and constructed of quite thick aluminum, which helps with sound proofing. Zalman provides a special cable for the two fans in the front. The cable has four connectors -- two black and two white. Two connectors allow the fans to run at full speed -- about 3000 rpm, and the other two reduce the speed to about 1200 rpm. The rear fan seems to be very quiet regardless of its speed, but it can be controlled with your motherboard's bios or software such as speedfan. Since I use liquid cooling, nothing inside the case gets very warm and I could do without any case fans, but I like the look with the LEDs. The front panel includes a large (about the size of a quarter) silver on/off switch, a small blue power on LED, two small red hard drive activity LEDs, a small silver reset switch, speaker and microphone input connectors, two USB connectors, and a fire wire connector.
Cons: This baby is expensive at around $400. This probably is more than it is worth, but if this is what you want, you will need to dig deep into your pockets. Both my son, who also has a GT1000, and I have experienced a problem with the little blue power LED indicator. At first the LED stayed lit while the power to the computer was on. After a few weeks, it would be on part of the time and off part of the time with the time in each state ocurring for random time periods. Finally, the LED on my case went off and stayed off, while my son's is still flashing on and off the last I heard. I've dealt with Zalman Tech Support in the past (I also have a Zalman Reserator XT hybrid liquid cooling system) and they are very pleasant to deal with. I couldn't be happier with how they handle problems, but I haven't contacted them about this yet.
Additional Comments: I have been using this case for more than a year now and have not had any additional problems. The blue light problem described above miraculously disappeared and hasn't come back. Consequently, I have no problems and couldn't be happier with this case. I'll leave the rating at 4-stars based on the price. (3/14/10)

Pioneer AVH-P4100DVD 7-Inch In-Dash Touchscreen Double-Din DVD Multimedia A/V Receiver Review

Pioneer AVH-P4100DVD 7-Inch In-Dash Touchscreen Double-Din DVD Multimedia A/V Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this unit for about a week now, and generally it's a pretty impressive unit. I also purchased the Pioneer GEX-P10HD HD Radio Tuner for Pioneer HD Radio-Ready Head Units, the Pioneer CD-BTB200 Bluetooth Wireless Adapter, and the Pioneer Car CDIU200V 2 Meter USB iPod Cable for AVH-P4100DVD.
Installation:
Installation for the product was generally clear. I am using the unit in a 1999 Nissan Altima. Had plenty of room for all three pieces either below the stereo or below the steering column.
AUX Inputs:
You'll need to buy an 1/8" headphone extension cable if you plan to use the aux input to connect to a normal player since the AUX input is in the back of the unit. You can also use a normal RCA stereo to 1/8" cable like for a home stereo as well. The unit accepts both and you can use them for different units, so you can have an ipod hooked up and another player at the same time.
Video Quality:
* Album covers from ipods are okay. A bit fuzzy, but okay.
* DVDs look awesome on this unit. Every bit of what you'd want. Plenty of control options. I have no complaints on this one.
* Color on the screen is bright and easy to read and selecting things on the screen is also easy. It's a senstive touch, so I never have to press hard. Most of the text is very large, so it's easy to read and select on the screen in a moving car. Has a clean look, will be impressive to passengers, but when off, nothing that makes it look fancy (in my ideal world hopefully that'll reduce theft potential). If you go to the Pioneer Electronics website, they have many more images of the screens. And the unit looks just as good in real life as it does in those pictures.
Sound Options:
* EQ is parametric, only three bands, but it allows you to choose what frequency and how many frequencies on either side of that one are affected. Provides enough flexibility if you may be used to a 7 or 10 band EQ like I am.
* Also, for external players, the feature that compensates for MP3 compressed audio is great. Really helps improve the sound from ipods.
* The Loudness feature has three intensity levels--quite helpful since on some units the difference between it being on and off can be crazy.
* The sub woofer settings allow you to choose the sub frequency you want to accent or reduce--assuming you have one with an external amplifier connected.
* Clock is only military time with no option to change it to am or pm. And it has a "just" option that drops the minutes and rounds the hours up or not. At least in the U.S., why would someone want to know a rounded hour. Not sure how that helps with anything.
Radio:
* The automatic station presets (BSM) only work in each preset group. Each group only has 6 options. So, you can't have it find the top 18 strongest signals. For example, if you use BSM setup for FM set 1, and then do the same for FM set 2, they have practically the same stations in them.
* HD radio is great, but when selecting presets, it doesn't insert the name of the station like it does with normal FM. All you see is P1, P2, etc. And I have yet to find a way to manually add it in. I don't expect to. If you use the HD unit, the normal radio functionality in the unit is disabled. You can still get the analog signals, it just works a little differently. It seems like they forgot to dot a few i's. But it switches back and forth between the analog signal and digital signal pretty well. With strong FM signals, I really can't tell much of a difference. Generally speaking, I probably wouldn't buy this item again if I had the choice. Most stations don't provide song title and artist information, plus most average stereos have that capability anyway. And on the display, what information is available from the station is really small and cluttered at the top while tremendous space is wasted in the main areas. Poorly thought out for such a excellently featured unit.
* AM stations don't come in well. When they come in, they sound great. It basically acts like a digital signal, so it either comes in and out quickly so you can't catch the words, doesn't come in at all, or it's on perfectly. When perfectly, it sounds much better than a normal stereo. My guess is that there's a processor in the unit that tries to clean up the signal. But as a result, weaker signals are simply cut off. You can't turn this feature off. Pretty tough since AM signals are so weak in the first place. My last stereo was much better. AM HD certainly sounds better, but it requires a stronger signal than the analog AM. So, it doesn't help you either.
iPod Controls:
* iPod controls work just like on the ipod except the scroll wheel action. In playlists, you can't see title and artist together. It also truncates titles and shows only 5 at a time. It's hard to find artists on the screen if you have a lot and scrolling is time consuming. There's really nothing special with this feature. It's better on the ipod because you can use the scroll action. The stereo allows you to use the ipod to select songs instead if you want. I didn't find any significant bugs when using this feature.
* The unit allows you to play videos from your iPod or iTouch if you have video capability. I have a 5th generation ipod video (The stereo does have requirements as to what ipods can be used. Basically if you have one manufactured in the last two to three years, you'll be fine.). I used DVDFab's software on a PC to convert my DVDs to a format for the ipod. But for some reason, the videos wouldn't play via the stereo like they should. I have the same problem on exercise units with the same feature. It's probably a problem with my encoding. Just know you may have some adjustments to make. I haven't bought a video from iTunes yet. I'd assume the videos would work just fine then.
Parked Requirement:
* I found a way around the parking brake requirement like a couple other reviewers. It is as simple as connecing the parking brake lead to a switch and the switch to the car chasis. The switch will have to be on (i.e. grounded) when you start your car. Then you'd switch it off and then on again. Most product descriptions on sites about this unit talk about it blocking DVDs, but if you don't hook it up at all, it actually blocks other features in the unit as well, such as changing the display intensity and setting up the bluetooth module. Even after you engage the "parking brake", there is a compliance screen prior to watching a DVD that requires you to press OK saying you're parked. It's good they do that. They shouldn't be liable in an accident caused by us going around their system and watching a DVD or trying to dial a number while driving. By going around their system, we are certainly fully responsible for the consequences.
Bluetooth Capability:
* It allows you to dump your phonebook into the unit if your phone has that option. Wasn't too hard to do that on my Treo 700p. The microphone sounded great on the piece and callers through the stereo sounded ok. I wouldn't say it's clear, but not much better than what you hear through your cellphone. The unit disables the EQ, however. So, you're stuck with the default cellphone sound. The only thing you can do is balance the signal volume with the other equipment, which for the Treo is unnecessary since you can control that on the unit.
Backgrounds:
* The default set of background options are really good, except for the animated versions. They are very pixelated--very poor quality. The are still pretty cool, though. I still use one of them for some sources.
Summary:
Overall, I'm glad I bought the unit. The radio shortcomings and ipod clumsiness are pretty big ones for me. But considering the price here on Amazon vs. other options in the same price range, I still would have bought the unit again.

This is my third NAS drive in about as many years, the Terastation is replacing a Synology DS207+ and makes a much more solid impression. I liked the features such as dual Ethernet ports and hot-swap capability and the generally more business oriented design over the Synology's jack of all trades approach, as I am mostly storing files and I want reliable access from 3-4 machines, nothing fancy. While the TS runs well (for about a month now) I find the setup confusing and the manual unclear. Just turning it on and off is different from what I am used to, especially since the unit isn't powered down often. On the other hand, when running it does its job without much intervention. It's even backing itself up on two USB drives hooked up to it and sends me an email when the jobs are complete, but it beats me why the jobs are referred to be a name in the setup while the email uses only job numbers identified nowhere.
If you like a heavier duty NAS drive, this seems to be a good choice, but be prepared to fuddle with it for a while.

Garmin GPSMAP 62S Handheld GPS Navigator Review

Garmin GPSMAP 62S Handheld GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I can't get over how well the 62s gets a satellite signal...even indoors! I'm in my home office with a couple of small windows and just turned on the unit, after having it turned off for a couple of weeks: It booted and acquired the first satellite in less than 60 seconds and can navigate in less than 90 seconds, with four out of 5 bars on my signal strength meter. When I turned it off and then on again, I was able to navigate as soon as it booted...in 20 seconds. It seems to "remember" what satellites are overhead and spends less time searching for signals if it has recently acquired a signal.
I used the 62s while hunting and found that I could always get a solid signal regardless of how dense the forest was. The 62s is so much better than the eTrex Vista I had been using since 2002...the 62s is in a different league.
The user interface took a little getting used to, when compared to the eTrex Visa, but the 62s has a lot more features. The technology has come a long way in 8 years.
By the way, Garmin's web site only specifies that the 62s accepts up to 4GB Micro SD cards. However, 4GB Micro SD cards hard to find, but the 4GB Micro SDHC cards are readily available. I contacted Garmin Tech Support to confirm that the 62s supports both Micro SD and Micro SDHC cards up to 4GB max.
The power saver feature worked great, and I love the fact that the user interface can be customized.
I purchased a ZAGG screen protector for my 62s. ZAGG didn't have one for the 62s yet (the 62s was too new when I purchased it) but the one that fits a GPSmap 60 can be trimmed and works fine.
I have absolutely no regrets at having purchased this product, and I'm a real picky consumer. Garmin scored another home run with this one!

Yamaha's versatile, high-power HTR-5590 is a stereo and surround-sound audio/video receiver that's loaded with features and technology to make your music and movie soundtracks sound as good as they possibly can. The receiver offers the convenience of DVD-Audio/multichannel SACD-ready six-channel analog inputs alongside the latest 6.1-channel surround processing and premium Yamaha sound technologies.Exclusive Yamaha technologies include Quad-Field Cinema DSP (based on a wealth of measured data in real studios and halls, this processing is designed to highlight the full potential of movie sound mixes), Silent Cinema (which simulates 5.1-channel listening through a pair of ordinary stereo headphones, not included), and the company's YSS-938 32-bit DSP chip providing 25 unique surround algorithms with 45 variations to help you perfectly match your simulated acoustic space to your video program. When hooked up with the digital-audio output from a DVD-Video player or digital satellite receiver, the 100-watts-per-channel HTR-5590 handles 5.1-channel surround decoding for both major formats, Dolby Digital and DTS. In addition, the HTR-5590 also processes Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES (as well as DTS Neo 6 and DTS ES Matrix 6.1), which create an even more expansive soundfield through the use of a center-rear surround channel, totaling six discrete full-range channels in addition to the LFE (low-frequency effects) channel: left, center, right, and left, center, and right surround.Non-Dolby Digital and DTS sources can benefit from surround processing, too--with enhanced directional steering over standard four-channel Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic II provides five channels of surround processing from any stereo source--whether a TV broadcast, VHS tapes, or your favorite CDs, cassettes, and LPs. Pro Logic II delivers full-bandwidth stereo surround channels with 40 dB of left-right separation. Then there's the six-channel DVD-Audio/SACD-ready inputs mentioned above. If these formats are so high-tech, you might wonder, why do you need analog inputs to appreciate them? Because, for reasons of content protection, DVD-Audio and SACD players perform their own digital-to-analog conversion, passing high-resolution analog, rather than digital, signals on to your amplifier. (And analog, after all, is what your amp feeds your speakers.)The versatile unit offers 11 video input connections (with four S-video and two high-resolution component-video inputs), a whopping seven fixed and assignable digital-audio inputs (great for DVD, DSS, CD, laserdisc, gaming consoles, or minidisc), and front-panel input connections for your camcorder or other spontaneous hookup gear. The HTR-5590 comes with a preset, learning, universal remote control. It features 11 analog audio inputs to match, including the multichannel input and a dedicated phono input for your turntable (and we think you'll be surprised with how good that can sound!).Yamaha's Accurate Touch volume control lets you make delicate adjustments within a narrow volume range while still letting you adjust to very high or low levels quickly and accurately. The receiver's heavy-duty binding post-speaker terminals accept banana plugs, spade connectors, and a variety of speaker wire, including heavy-gauge cable.Last, but certainly not least, the HTR-5590 benefits from Yamaha's Digital ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) build philosophy. ToP-ART's goal is to maximize digital quality while minimizing analog circuitry. The culmination of the best digital engineering and design possible, it brings together several key elements to create the best-sounding, easiest-to-use AV components available. What's in the Box Receiver, remote control, remote batteries, FM wire antenna, AM loop antenna, and a user's manual.

These are not your average, tinny iPod speakers. I have never owned an iPod speaker before, nor had I heard of Kanto, but I have heard other people's speakers and these blow the little guys away.
First of all, when I opened the box there were no cables except for the power cable in the box. Bummer. It was past 9 pm EST on a Friday night, and I thought to myself, "OK, you are SOL until Monday." I called Kanto's customer service (which is in British Columbia, btw) just for the heck of it and was surprised to be immediately connected to a VERY polite gentleman who apologized countless times for the shortage of cables and promised to send them out immediately. Which he did. I had the cables by the following Wednesday. He sent them FedEx Express! Coming from Canada that's three business days, since they had to clear customs and all that. So that was very impressive customer service, indeed! No questions asked, no hassle, extremely friendly and very, very efficient. He even called me back after we'd hung up the first time to confirm that I had the power cord, which I was not missing. I doubt you can say the same for those made-in-China speakers, or for many companies, really.
When I got the cables I found I had misplaced the directions (DOH!) and so I had to wing it. Not that I didn't want to call Kanto CS again, because that would have been a pleasure, I'm sure, but I wanted to listen to my speakers immediately. So I went to work hooking them up to my TV. The speaker-to-speaker cable is amazing. I was not expecting such quality. Granted, this is an expensive set, but it really is a nice, thick, cable that should last for the life of the unit. My husband joked about stealing it for his electric guitar. I was able to hook everything up to the TV, S-Video and all, in about 3 seconds flat without instructions. I tried the set out, and it sounds AMAZING. I really had no idea what I was missing before. I am thrilled that I can even play videos from my iPod on my TV and charge it while it's docked. I did not even need an adapter to use the dock with my iPod video.
The speakers are very substantial and beautiful. They are very heavy. I was surprised at the heft of the box when it was delivered. I know these will last a long, long time. They are very shiny and attractive. We have them separated by about two feet on our TV stand. They are at floor level, which sounds great. They are not very portable, but if you want portable you wouldn't be looking at these anyway. It's not like you can't move them, you probably just wouldn't want to. They certainly won't break if you do.
I have no complaints about this system. Even the remote seems fine to me. I'm sure I will discover many more things to love about this as I use it more in the weeks to come.
